And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”

PETER  APOSTLE  OF  JESUS  CHRIST

Mark Chapter 8 verses 27-29 – Peter says to Jesus, ‘You are the Christ!’

Think for a moment what Peter had seen by being with Jesus: He the professional fisherman had been taught to fish by the carpenter Jesus (Luke 5:1-11); he had heard Jesus preach (Mark 1:38,39), seen him a heal a leper out of pity (Mark 1:40-42), cure paralysis (Mark 2:3-12), restore life to a withered hand (Mark 3:1-5), and heal many others (Mark 3:10). From possessed men Jesus had driven out demons who cried out in fear, ‘You are the Son of God’, and – from one man – the many demons that made him exceptionally violent (3:11; 5:1-20). He brought healing where many doctors had been powerless to help (5:25-34); and he had raised to life a dead child (see last week’s post). He had also calmed a great wind storm, walked on the sea, and fed 5,000 men with 5 loaves and 2 fishes (4:35-41; 6:45-51; 6:41-44).

No wonder that rumours were going around. People were saying that one of the prophets had come back. So, Jesus asked the disciples, ‘What do you think?’ Peter answers, ‘You are the Saviour Messiah!’

Finished were the centuries of waiting for the Saviour King of prophecy. Jesus was the Christ promised in the sacred scriptures (e.g. Zechariah 9:9).
