PETER APOSTLE OF JESUS CHRIST Acts Chapter 4 verses 1-22 – The apostles Peter and John are brought to trial

Acts Chapter 4 verses 1-22 – The apostles Peter and John are brought to trial

[See separate post for text of whole chapter]

Last time we read in Chapter 3 how a lame man was healed in the temple, and what it was that Peter said to the crowd who saw the healing.

Today in Chapter 4 we are told what happened next.

Because Peter and John were preaching about resurrection and life in the name of Jesus, both the temple authorities, and the Sadducees who did not believe in resurrection, were annoyed, and arrested them to be tried by a special gathering of national religious leaders.

Again, the Holy Spirit gave courage to Peter, and the words to speak.

The two prisoners are being examined before the sangha, but it is truly as if Peter is examining them, the sangha, before the judgment seat of God! He says, ’As for this man here, know this, that Jesus healed him.’

Verse 10

“Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead – by him this man is standing before you well.”

Then he reminds them of a sutra from scripture, ‘You leaders, whose office is to build and uphold the true dharma of Israel, see what you did to him. This Jesus, the very foundation of dharma … ‘

Verse 11

“This Jesus is ‘the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone’

(Peter quotes a sutra in Psalm 118 verse 22).”

He goes on, ‘He is the One come to bring us salvation (v.12)”. And the sangha knew full well that he was continuing to refer to the sutra in Psalm 118, which reads, “Save now, O Lord … Blessed is he that is coming in the name of the Lord.” [These verses foretelling the Messiah were known even to the common people who shouted them when welcoming Jesus into Jerusalem (Mark 11:9)]

Peter, ‘He’s the only One. Although you rejected him, God raised him.’

Verse 12

“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Peter, the Galilean fisherman, spoke like a learned scribe! And the sangha had no answer, except to command them to speak no more in Jesus’s name. But, again, Peter and John answer them back!

Verses 19, 20

“Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge. For we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”

Then they were released, and went back to their friends to pray with them for continuing boldness of speech (vv.23-31).

Next time we will read about the compassion and generosity that the Holy Spirit gave to believers; but also about what happened to two persons who only pretended to be compassionate.
