To Believe in Jesus – Part 4

 

What Jesus did at the Temple exposed the lies and hypocrisy of man-made religious profiteering and His disciples eventually knowing the truth who is the real Messiah.

 

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 2:13-22

13དེ་ཡང་ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པའི་པེ་སག་གི་དུས་ཆེན་སླེབས་ལ་ཉེ་བ༌ན། སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་ཡར་ཡེ་རུ་སཱ་ལེམ་དུ་ཕེབས་པ༌དང༌། 14མཆོད་ཁང་ནང་དུ་བ་གླང༌དང༌། ལུག ཕུག་རོན་བཅས་ཚོང་མཁན་དང་དངུལ་བརྗེ་མཁན་རྣམས་བསྡད་ཡོད་པ་གཟིགས༌ཏེ། 15ཁོང་གིས་ཐག་པས་རྟ་ལྕག་ཅིག་མཛད༌དེ། བ་གླང་དང་ལུག་དང་བཅས་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་མཆོད་ཁང་ལས་ཕྱིར་ཕུད་པ༌དང༌། དངུལ་བརྗེ་མཁན་གྱི་དངུལ་སྒོར་ཡང་ས་རུ་གཏོར་བ་དང་དེ་དག་གི་ཅོག་ཙེའང་སར་བསྒྱེལ་ཏོ།། 16དེ་ནས་ཕུག་རོན་ཚོང་མཁན་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ཕུག་རོན་འདི་དག་ཕྱིར་ཁྱེར༌ཅིག བདག་གི་ཡབ་ཀྱི་ཕོ་བྲང་འདི་ནི་ཚོང་རར་བྱེད་མི་རུང་ཞེས་གསུངས་སོ།། 17དེ་ནས་ཁོང་གི་ཐུགས་སྲས་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་གསུང་རབ་ཀྱི་མདོ༌ལས། ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་བཞུགས་གནས་ཀྱི་དོན་དུ་ང་རང་སེམས་པ་ཤིན་ཏུ་འཚབ་ནས་མེ་ལྟར༌འབར་ཞེས་བཀོད་ཡོད་པ་དེ་དྲན་ནོ།། 18དེ་ནས་ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་རྣམས་ན༌རེ། ཁྱེད་ལ་དོན་འདི་རྣམས་མཛད་པའི་དབང་ཡོད་པར་བདེན་དཔང་བྱ་ཆེད་གྲུབ་རྟགས་གང་ཞིག་སྟོན་ནུས་སམ་ཞེས་སྨྲས་པ༌ལ། 19སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། གལ་ཏེ་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་མཆོད་ཁང་འདི་བཤིག་ན། བདག་གིས་ཉིན་གསུམ་ལ་སླར་ཡང་བརྩིག་པར་བྱ་ཞེས་གསུངས་སོ།། 20ཡང་དེ་རྣམས་ན༌རེ། མཆོད་ཁང་འདི་ནི་ལོ་ངོ་བཞི་བཅུ་ཞེ་དྲུག་གི་རིང་ལ་བརྩིགས་པ་ཡིན་ཡང་ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ཉིན་གསུམ་ལ་བརྩིག་ཐུབ་བམ་ཞེས་དྲིས། 21འོན་ཀྱང་དེ་ནི་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་རང་གི་སྐུ་ལུས་ཡིན་པའི་མཆོད་ཁང་ལ་དམིགས་ཏེ་གསུངས་པ་ཡིན། 22དེའི༌ཕྱིར། ཁོང་ཉིད་སྐུ་གཤེགས་པ་ནས་སླར་གསོན་པའི་རྗེས༌སུ། ཐུགས་སྲས་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཁོང་གི་གསུང་དེ་དྲན༌ནས། གསུང་རབ་ཀྱི་མདོ་དང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་གསུངས་པའི་བཀའ་ལ་དད་པར་གྱུར༌ཏོ།།

 

John 2:13-22

13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

 

What Jesus did at the Temple on this incident is a very uncomfortable incident for religious groups that advocate love and tolerance to accept. Even Christian church leaders who teach much about Christian love find it very difficult to explain what Jesus did here.

John did provide us a clue –

 

17དེ་ནས་ཁོང་གི་ཐུགས་སྲས་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་གསུང་རབ་ཀྱི་མདོ༌ལས། ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་བཞུགས་གནས་ཀྱི་དོན་དུ་ང་རང་སེམས་པ་ཤིན་ཏུ་འཚབ་ནས་མེ་ལྟར༌འབར་ཞེས་བཀོད་ཡོད་པ་དེ་དྲན་ནོ།།

 

17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

 

What does that mean?

A bit of background history – the Temple means everything to the Jewish way of life in those days and especially those seeking redemption and restoration with God.

In simplified explanation the whole Tempe service provided the platform or channel for sinners to find restoration of relationship with God.  All the sacrifices and offerings brought to the Temple were to find peace with God, and also to restore peace with God and man if they had committed offenses against any of their neighbors.

The most important piece of furniture in the Temple had to be the Ark of the Covenant which was supposed to be INSIDE the Most Holy Place. But Jesus knew, and there were people who knew, the Ark of the Covenant was not there!

 

Since the time of Babylon Exile, the Ark of the Covenant had gone missing!

 

The preeminence of the Ark of the Covenant with regards to what the people had learnt and understood about restoration with God was clearly demonstrated on the yearly event of Yom Kippur when only God’s appointed High Priest was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place once a year to present blood sacrifice and offerings and to seek restoration of peace for the whole nation of God’s chosen people.

So at that time of Jesus, with the Ark of the Covenant missing there was no more true meaning and purpose to what was happening at the Temple. And what these people did “selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there” were an obvious religious scam!

Did Jesus’ disciple know about this religious scam going on at the Temple? Of course they did! But why it seems as if nobody did anything to correct such wrong doing? Because it was a highly organized religious scam that involves the Sanhedrin and they had their thugs protecting their money-profiteering operations. Therefore Jesus had every reason to be angry!

Before the death and resurrection of Jesus, His disciples had certain expectation this Jesus could be the Messiah but were in doubts.

After Jesus was raised from the dead, His disciples could had remembered what was spoken by Malachi about the coming Messiah

 

མ་ལ་ཀི 3:1

ཀུན་དབང་ལྡན་པའི་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་བཀའ་ལན་དུ། ངས་རང་གི་བང་ཆེན་དེ་ངའི་འགྲུལ་ལམ་གྲ་སྒྲིག་བྱེད་ཕྱིར་གཏོང་རྒྱུ་ཡིན་པ་དང་། དེ་རྗེས་ཁྱོད་ཚོས་འཚོལ་བའི་གཙོ་བོ་དེ་བློ་བུར་དུ་ཁོང་གི་མཆོད་ཁང་ནང་ཕེབས་པར་འགྱུར། ཁྱོད་ཚོས་འདོད་པའི་བང་ཆེན་དེ་ཡོང་ནས་ངའི་དམ་བཅའ་ཁྱབ་བསྒྲགས་བྱེད་པར་འགྱུར།

 

Malachi 3:1

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.

 

Jesus’ disciples knew the message of Malachi did points to both John the Baptist and Jesus.

They knew John the Baptist was sent by God to prepare the people to receive the Messiah.

Although Jesus did not lead an army and defect the Roman as Sanhedrin expected but what Jesus did at the Temple was clear evident of His authority to purify and cleanse the Temple

 

མ་ལ་ཀི 3:1-4

1ཀུན་དབང་ལྡན་པའི་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་བཀའ་ལན་དུ། ངས་རང་གི་བང་ཆེན་དེ་ངའི་འགྲུལ་ལམ་གྲ་སྒྲིག་བྱེད་ཕྱིར་གཏོང་རྒྱུ་ཡིན་པ་དང་། དེ་རྗེས་ཁྱོད་ཚོས་འཚོལ་བའི་གཙོ་བོ་དེ་བློ་བུར་དུ་ཁོང་གི་མཆོད་ཁང་ནང་ཕེབས་པར་འགྱུར། ཁྱོད་ཚོས་འདོད་པའི་བང་ཆེན་དེ་ཡོང་ནས་ངའི་དམ་བཅའ་ཁྱབ་བསྒྲགས་བྱེད་པར་འགྱུར།

2འོན་ཀྱང་ཁོང་ཕེབས་པའི་ཉིན་མོ་དེ་སུས་བཟོད་བསྲན་བྱེད་ཐུབ་བམ། ཁོང་མངོན་པར་མཛད་སྐབས་སུ་ཞིག་གསོན་པོར་གནས་ཐུབ་བམ། ཁོང་ནི་ལྷད་འདོན་བྱེད་མེ་དངཡི་རྩི་མཁྲེགས་པོ་ལྟར་འདྲའོ། 3ཁོང་ནི་དངུལ་བཞུར་ནས་གཙང་བར་མཛད་མཁན་ཞིག་གི་ཚུལ་དུ་ཞལ་ཆད་གཅོད་པར་ཕེབས་རྒྱུ་ཡིན། བཟོ་པས་གསེར་དང་དངུལ་སོགས་དྭངས་སྙིགས་དབྱེ་བ་བཞིན་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་བང་ཆེན་གྱིས་བླ་མ་རྣམས་ལའང་དེ་བཞིན་གཙང་བར་མཛད་དོ། དེ་ལྟར་གནང་དགོས་དོན་ནི་དེ་ཚོས་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་དྲང་བདེན་གྱི་འབུལ་བ་འབུལ་ཐུབ་པའི་ཕྱིར་རོ། 4དེ་རྗེས་ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་དང་ཡེ་རུ་ཤ་ལེམ་གྱི་མི་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་འཁྱེར་ཡོང་བའི་འབུལ་བ་རྣམས་སྔར་བཞིན་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཐུགས་མཉེས་པར་འགྱུར།

 

Malachi 3:1-4

For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord. 4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

 

We need to pay attention to this –

 

2འོན་ཀྱང་ཁོང་ཕེབས་པའི་ཉིན་མོ་དེ་སུས་བཟོད་བསྲན་བྱེད་ཐུབ་བམ། ཁོང་མངོན་པར་མཛད་སྐབས་སུ་ཞིག་གསོན་པོར་གནས་ཐུབ་བམ། ཁོང་ནི་ལྷད་འདོན་བྱེད་མེ་དངཡི་རྩི་མཁྲེགས་པོ་ལྟར་འདྲའོ། 3ཁོང་ནི་དངུལ་བཞུར་ནས་གཙང་བར་མཛད་མཁན་ཞིག་གི་ཚུལ་དུ་ཞལ་ཆད་གཅོད་པར་ཕེབས་རྒྱུ་ཡིན། བཟོ་པས་གསེར་དང་དངུལ་སོགས་དྭངས་སྙིགས་དབྱེ་བ་བཞིན་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་བང་ཆེན་གྱིས་བླ་མ་རྣམས་ལའང་དེ་བཞིན་གཙང་བར་མཛད་དོ། དེ་ལྟར་གནང་དགོས་དོན་ནི་དེ་ཚོས་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་དྲང་བདེན་གྱི་འབུལ་བ་འབུལ་ཐུབ་པའི་ཕྱིར་རོ།

 

2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? That was exactly what Jesus did!

And only the Messiah chosen of God have the power and authority to do such a things and God raised Jesus from the dead to set His approval upon Jesus that this is the Messiah chosen of God!
