What we can learn from the letters of Peter about practice of faith in Christ in times of uncertainty.

 

པེ་ཏྲོ་དང་པོ། 1:17-21

17 ཕྱོགས་རིས་མེད་པར་སོ་སོས་བྱ་བ་གང་བྱས་པར་གཞིགས་ནས་ཁྲིམས་གཅོད་མཛད་མཁན་ལ་ཁྱེད་ཚོས་ཡབ་ཅེས་ཞུ་བས། གནས་གཡར་བ་ལྟར་འཇིག་རྟེན་འདིར་སྡོད་རིང་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་བཀུར་སྟི་བྱེད་དེ་མི་ཚེ་སྐྱེལ་དགོས།

18 མེས་པོ་ལས་བྱུང་བའི་དོན་མེད་ཀྱི་ལུགས་སྲོལ་ལྟར་ཁྱེད་ཚོ་གསེར་རམ་དངུལ་ལ་སོགས་པའི་འཇིག་ཏུ་འགྲོ་བའི་རིན་གྱིས་བླུས་པ་མ་ཡིན་གྱིས།

19 སྐྱོན་དང་དྲི་མ་བྲལ་བའི་ལུག་གུ་ལྟར་གྱི་མཱ་ཤི་ཀའི་སྐུ་ཁྲག་རིན་ཐང་ཆེ་བ་དེས་བླུས་པ་ཁྱེད་ཚོས་ཤེས།

20 དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་འཇིག་རྟེན་བཀོད་པའི་སྔོན་ལ་ཁོང་ནི་བདམས་ཀྱང༌། ད་དུས་མཐའ་མར་ཁྱེད་ཚོའི་དོན་དུ་མངོན་པར་གྱུར།

21 ཁྱེད་ཚོ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་བརྒྱུད་ནས་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་དད་པ་སྐྱེས། དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཁོང་འཆི་བ་ནས་སླར་གསོན་པར་མཛད་ནས་གཟི་བརྗིད་གནང་བས། ཁྱེད་ཚོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་དད་ཅིང་རེ་བ་བྱེད།

 

1 Peter 1:17-21

17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

 

This message from Peter to the disciples do speaks of God’s grace and mercy in providing redemption while upholding judgement.

Due to human sin and rebellion against God’s truth we had been down the path of darkness and without hope. And when people hear of the “judgement of God” reactions would either be in disbelieve or disregards while those who believe may just go away in fearful condemnation.

The path of redemption provided by God through the blood of Christ must be received with gratitude by living our new life in the fear of God. In the same context Peter speaks of being holy as in living in obedience to God’s words.

Peter highlighted the unparalleled sacrifice of Christ to redeem us from sin and death – The life and blood of Jesus a sinless pure character approved of God.

Peter’s message emphasized the foundation of our faith based on the sacrifice and resurrection of Christ. Therefore we are to remember salvation is of God through Jesus the Christ and we who received redemption are under obligation to live in newness of life in demonstration of obedience to God’s words.

This is our hope and future in Jesus, our inheritance and portions in the kingdom of God.

Peter’s message calls for perseverance, faith, and obedience to God’s words.

14ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ནི་བཀའ་བརྩི་བའི་བུ་ཕྲུག་ཡིན་པ་བཞིན། སྔོན་ཆད་རྨོངས་པའི་དུས་ཀྱི་འདོད་ཆགས་བཞིན་དུ་མ་བྱེད༌ཅིག 15དེ་ལས་ལྡོག་སྟེ་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་ཞལ་འབོད་གནང་མཁན་ནི་དམ་པ་ཡིན་པ་བཞིན། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱང་སྤྱོད་ལམ་ཀུན་ནས་དམ་པ་ཡིན་དགོས༌ཏེ། 16གསུང་རབ་ཀྱི་མདོ་ལས་ཇི་སྐད༌དུ། ང་རང་དམ་པ་ཡིན་པའི༌ཕྱིར། །ཁྱོད་ཀྱང་དམ་པ་ཡིན་དགོས༌སོ། །ཞེས་བཀོད་པའི་ཕྱིར༌རོ།།    

 

1 Peter 1:14-16

14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

 

Our new life through being born again in Jesus leads to living in holiness for God.

But what does it means to be holy as according to God’s word and as revealed in scripture?

In brief definition to be holy means to live in obedience to God’s words.

What scripture teaches about being holy should not be clouded or misled by human religions doctrines and practices of naming festivals and events as “holy” and for such occasions when people gather together to party and feel happy.

The first mention of holy in scripture is found in Genesis 2:1-3

 

བཀོད་པ 2:1-3

1དེ་ལྟར་ནམ་མཁའ་དང་ས་གཞི་དང་དེའི་ནང་ཇི་ཡོད་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཆ་ཚངའགྲུབ་པར་མཛད་གནང་ངོ།

2ཉིན་བདུན་བར་དུ་དཀོན་མཆོག་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་ཕྱག་ལས་གནང་བ་ཐམས་ཅད་འགྲུབ་པར་མཛད་དེ། དེ་ཉིན་ངལ་གསོ་གནང་བར་བཞུགས་སོ།

3ཁོང་གིས་ཉིན་བདུན་པ་དེ་བྱིན་གྱིས་རླབས་ཤིང་དེ་ལ་དམིགས་བསལ་གྱི་ཉིན་ཞེས་དབྱེ་བ་གནང་ངོ་། གང་ལ་ཟེར་ན། ཉིན་དེ་ཁོང་རང་གིས་བཀོད་པའི་ཕྱག་ལས་ཐམས་ཅད་འགྲུབ་པར་མཛད་དེ་ངལ་གསོ་གནང་བར་བཞུགས་པའི་ཕྱིར་རོ།

 

Genesis 2:1-3

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

 

From here scripture set the meaning and definition of holy

1. Declared by God
2. Blessed by God
3. Mark and observe the completion of God’s work and time for rest

 

In Exodus 20 when God gave instruction to His redeemed people for obedience, for identity as His chosen people, and in order to observe what God declare as holy

8ངལ་གསོ་བའི་ཞག་སྲུང་ནས་ཉིན་དེ་ལ་དམ་པར་རྩིས་ཤིག

9ཞག་དྲུག་གི་བར་དུ་རང་གི་ལས་དོན་ཚང་མ་བྱེད་ཆོག

10འོན་ཀྱང་ཉིན་ཞག་བདུན་པ་དེ་ནི་ང་ལ་བསྔོ་འབུལ་བྱེད་པའི་ཉལ་གསོའི་ཉི་མ་ཡིན་པས། དེ་ཉིན་ཁྱོད་རང་དང་། ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་བུ་ཕྲུག་དང་། ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་བྲན་གཡོག་ཚོ་དང་། དུད་འགྲོ་དང་། གཞན་ཡང་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ཡུལ་དུ་གནས་སྡོད་བྱ་མཁན་ཕྱི་རྒྱལ་བ་ཚོས་ཀྱང་ལས་གང་ཡང་བྱེད་མི་ཆོག

11གང་ལ་ཟེར་ན། ཉིན་ཞག་དྲུག་གི་བར་དུ་ང་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ས་གཞི་དང་། ནམ་མཁའ་དང་རྒྱ་མཚོ་དང་དེའི་ནང་ཡོད་པ་ཚང་མ་བཀོད་དེ། ཉིན་ཞག་བདུན་པར་ངལ་གསོ་བ་ཡིན་པས། དེའི་རྐྱེན་གྱིས་ང་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ངལ་གསོ་བའི་ཞག་དེ་བྱིན་གྱིས་རླབས་ཏེ་དམ་པར་བྱས་པ་ཡིན་ནོ།

 

Exodus 20:8-11

8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

 

Scripture revealed a clear teaching about being holy in doing and observing what God said and declared to be holy.

Human religious leaders have gone the path of declaring holy days and festivals apart from God’s words and people become confused.

Based on scripture truth and God’s teaching to be holy simply means to do obedience to God’s words.

Peter in writing to the believers to be holy wanted them to turn away from their old ways of “ignorance” before they were born again. This “ignorance” Peter refers to is not about what they do not know about “holy events and festivals” in the societies they were living in. Peter was addressing believers living in pagan societies whose minds have been corrupted by human religions practice of “holy events” where people comes together doing things of wild parties and emotional happiness and nothing to do with what God actually declared as holy.

To practice true holy living as according to God’s words is to find true rest for our souls and body for the glory of God.

Our born again experience in Jesus empower us to know the truth of scripture teachings and to be holy for God. Therefore Peter emphasis

 

པེ་ཏྲོ་དང་པོ། 1:16

གསུང་རབ་ཀྱི་མདོ་ལས་ཇི་སྐད༌དུ། ང་རང་དམ་པ་ཡིན་པའི༌ཕྱིར། །ཁྱོད་ཀྱང་དམ་པ་ཡིན་དགོས༌སོ། །ཞེས་བཀོད་པའི་ཕྱིར༌རོ།།        

 

1 Peter 1:16 – since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

དེའི་ཕྱིར་སོ་སོའི་སེམས་གྲ་སྒྲིག་བྱེད་དེ་རང་ཚོད་ཟིན་ནས་ཡེ་ཤུ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་མངོན་པར་འགྱུར་བའི་དུས་སུ་ཁྱེད་ཚོར་གནང་རྒྱུ་ཡིན་པའི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ལ་རེ་བ་མཐའ་གཅིག་ཏུ་བྱེད་ཅིག

 

1 Peter 1:13

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

 

What Peter speaks about here in v13 is a conclusive point of what was mentioned earlier which can be summarized in few points

 

1. We are born again to new life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
2. We receive an inheritance in the kingdom of God with the future hope eternal life and fellowship with God through Jesus the Christ
3. Although these promises of God is sure and steadfast we must persevere and keep faith as there is the future ultimate redemption we look forward to where we will be with God for all eternity

 

Therefore in view of our hope in Christ and our future ultimate redemption Peter admonishes us how we should continue our lives here on Earth while waiting for our future promises.

Peter’s message to “prepare our minds” and to be “sober-minded” is in line with godly teachings from Paul and Isaiah

 

རོ་མཱ་པ། 12:1-2

1 དེའི་ཕྱིར་སྤུན་ཟླ་རྣམས། དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཁྱེད་ཚོར་ཐུགས་རྗེ་གནང་བས་ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ལུས་ནི་གསོན་པོ་དང་དམ་པ། དཀོན་མཆོག་ཐུགས་མཉེས་པའི་མཆོད་པ་ལྟར་འབུལ་བར་སྐུལ། དེ་ནི་ཁྱེད་ཚོའི་བདེན་པའི་བསྙེན་བཀུར་ཡིན།

2 འཇིག་རྟེན་འདིའི་བྱེད་ལུགས་ལ་མ་བལྟས་པར་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་དགོངས་པ་བཟང་པོ་དང༌། ཁོང་ཐུགས་མཉེས་པ་དང༌། ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པ་གང་ཡིན་ཤེས་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་སེམས་གསར་དུ་སྒྱུར་བའི་ཐོག་ནས་མི་གསར་པར་གྱུར་ཅིག

 

Romans 12:1-2

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

 

ཡེ་ཤ་ཡཱ 55:6-9

6ཁོང་གི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་བསྒྱུར་ནས་ཁོང་ལ་སྨོན་ལམ་འདེབས།

ད་ལྟ་ཁོང་ནི་ཐག་ཉེར་ཡོད་པ་ཡིན།

7སྤྱོད་ངན་རང་གི་བྱེད་ལུགས་དོར་བཅུག་ནས། དེ་ཚོའི་བསམ་བློ་གཏོང་ཚུལ་བསྒྱུར་རུ་བཅུག།

དེ་ཚོ་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ང་ཚོའི་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཁོང་གི་ཕྱོགས།

ང་ཡི་ལམ་ནི་ཁྱོད་ཚོའི་ལམ་མི་འདྲ།

9ས་ལས་མཐོ་རིས་ཇི་ལྟར་མཐོ་བ་ལྟར། ཁྱོད་སྟེང་ང་ཡི་ལམ་དང་བསམ་བློ་མཐོ།

 

Isaiah 55:6-9

6 “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; 7 let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

 

Apparently as born again disciples of Jesus our initial confrontation with the society we are living in will be in the area of perspective choices and preferences.

While the world is casting off all restrains what kind of moral choices we make must be in line with God’s teaching and that will result in some form of conflicts between us born again disciples and those who want to follow the ways of the world.

People in this world seek popularity and material prosperity but how we wish to conduct our lifestyle need to reflect the teachings of Jesus the Christ.

As Paul taught to Timothy

 

ཐི་མོ་ཐེ། ༡  6:6-10   

6 དོན་དམ་དུ་ཆོག་ཤེས་དང་བཅས་པའི་ཆོས་སེམས་ནི་ནོར་གྱི་མཆོག་གོ 7 རྒྱུ་མཚན་ནི་ང་ཚོས་འཇིག་རྟེན་འདིར་གང་ཡང་ཁྱེར་མ་ཡོང་ཞིང༌། དེ་ནས་ཅི་ཡང་འཁྱེར་མི་ཐུབ་པས། 8 ང་ཚོར་ཟས་དང་གོས་ཡོད་ན་ཆོག 9 ཕྱུག་པོར་འགྱུར་འདོད་པ་རྣམས་ནི་བསླུ་བྲིད་དང༌། བླུན་ཞིང་གནོད་པའི་འདོད་ཆགས་ཀྱི་དོང་རྙི་ལ་ལྷུང༌། འདོད་ཆགས་དེ་ཚོའི་སྒོ་ནས་མི་རྣམས་ཕུང་བ་དང་འཇིག་པར་འགྱུར། 10 རྒྱུ་ནོར་ལ་ཆགས་པ་དེ་ངན་པ་སྣ་ཚོགས་ཀྱི་འབྱུང་རྩ་ཡིན། དེ་ལ་ཆགས་པས་མི་ཁ་ཤས་དད་པ་ལོག་ནས་རང་ཉིད་ལ་རྐྱེན་ངན་མང་པོ་འཕྲད་མྱོང༌།

 

1 Timothy 6:6-10

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
