1 ཡེ་ཤུ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀའི་སྐུ་ཚབ་ང་པེ་ཏྲོ་ཡིས། དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་བདམས་པའི་མི་རྣམས་ཏེ་པོན་ཏུ་དང༌། ག་ལད་ཡཱ། ཀ་པ་དོག་ཡཱ། ཨེ་ཞེ་ཡཱ། པི་ཐིན་ཡཱ་ཞིང་ཆེན་གནས་གཡར་བ་ལྟར་སྡོད་མཁན་རྣམས་ལ་འཕྲིན་ཡིག་འདི་ཕུལ་ལོ།

1 Peter 1:1-2

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

                                                                The People to Whom Peter is writing

 

His Name for Them

Peter calls them exiles from their homeland (skye-yul), whether or not all of them were actually exiles (This will be explained in the next post).

 

Their Blessing, and Yours

Peter says they have been chosen by loving Father God for liberation; they are not just victims of the uncaring law of cyclic existence (‘khor-ba). You too, dear Tibetan reader, if you believe, that means that you also are chosen. Therefore you can read this letter as if it was written to you.  

 

Why God has Blessed You

God knew beforehand that you would believe, and his plan for you is to be making you holy by his Spirit of holiness.

 

How God has Blessed You

His plan was for you to obediently listen to Jesus, and understand that his death was a blood sacrifice (dmar-mchod) to clear away all your sins.

 

Peter’s Greeting to You and the Exiles

‘May you know richly God’s free blessing, and be at peace!’

3 ང་ཚོའི་གཙོ་བོ་ཡེ་ཤུ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀའི་ཡབ་སྟེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་བསྟོད་པ་འབུལ་བར་ཤོག ཁོང་གི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཆེན་པོས་ཡེ་ཤུ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་འཆི་བ་ནས་སླར་གསོན་པ་བརྒྱུད་ནས་ཁོང་གིས་ངེད་རྣམས་ལ་ཚེ་སྲོག་གསར་པ་སྐྱེ་བ་དང༌། རྟག་ཏུ་གནས་པའི་རེ་བ་གནང་བ་མ་ཟད།

4 དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཞལ་ཆད་གནང་བའི་བྱིན་རླབས་ཀྱི་བགོ་སྐལ་མི་འཇིག་པ། དྲི་མ་མེད་པ། མི་ཡལ་བ་ཞིག་ཀྱང་གནང་ངོ༌། དེ་ནི་ཁྱེད་ཚོའི་ཕྱིར་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཞིང་ཁམས་སུ་ཉར་ཡོད།

5 ཐར་པ་དེ་མ་འཐོབ་པའི་བར་དུ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་རང་གི་ནུས་མཐུར་བརྟེན་ནས་ཁྱེད་ཚོའི་དད་པ་བརྒྱུད་དེ་ཁྱེད་རྣམས་སྲུང་བཞིན་ཡོད། ཐར་པ་དེ་ནི་དུས་མཐའ་མར་མངོན་སུམ་དུ་འགྱུར་ངེས་ཡིན།

6 དུས་ཐུང་ངུར་ཉམས་ཚོད་སྣ་ཚོགས་ཀྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱོང་དགོས་ནའང༌། བྱིན་རླབས་དེ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཐོབ་པའི་རྐྱེན་གྱིས་ཁྱེད་ཚོ་ཧ་ཅང་དགའ་བར་བྱེད།

7 ཁྱེད་ཚོའི་དད་པ་བདེན་པ་ཡིན་པར་སྟོན་ཞིང༌། ཡེ་ཤུ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་བྱོན་ནས་མངོན་སུམ་དུ་འགྱུར་བའི་ཚེ་ཁྱེད་ལ་བསྟོད་པ་དང༌། གཟི་བརྗིད། བཀུར་སྟི་བཅས་འཐོབ་པའི་ཆེད་དུ་ཉམས་ཚོད་དེ་ཚོ་བྱུང༌། དཔེར་ན་འཇིག་ཏུ་འགྲོ་བའི་གསེར་ཡང་མེ་ཡིས་བཙོ་སྦྱང་བྱེད་དེ། ཁྱེད་ཚོའི་དད་པ་གསེར་ལས་རིན་ཐང་ཆེའོ།

8 ཁྱེད་རྣམས་གཙོ་བོ་ཡེ་ཤུ་མཇལ་མ་མྱོང་ཡང་ཁོང་ལ་གཅེས་པར་འཛིན་ཞིང༌། ད་ལྟ་མི་མཐོང་ཡང་ཁོང་ལ་དད་པ་བྱེད་དེ། བརྗོད་ལས་འདས་པ་དང་གཟི་བརྗིད་ཀྱིས་ཁེངས་པའི་དགའ་སྤྲོ་ཆེན་པོས་ཁྱེད་ཚོ་དགའ་བར་བྱེད།

9 གང་ཡིན་ཟེར་ན། ཁྱེད་ཚོའི་དད་པའི་འབྲས་བུ་སྟེ་ཐར་པ་འཐོབ་བཞིན་ཡོད།

10 ཁྱེད་རྣམས་ལ་འབྱུང་བར་འགྱུར་བའི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་བརྗོད་མཁན་ལུང་སྟོན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཐར་པ་དེའི་སྐོར་ཞིབ་ཕྲ་རྩད་གཅོད་བྱས་ཏེ།

11 ཁོང་ཚོའི་སེམས་ནང་ལ་བཞུགས་པའི་མཱ་ཤི་ཀའི་ཐུགས་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་མཱ་ཤི་ཀའི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་དང་དེའི་རྗེས་སུ་འབྱུང་བའི་གཟི་བརྗིད་ཀྱི་སྐོར་ལུང་བསྟན་པའི་ཚེ། དེའི་དུས་སམ་གནས་ཚུལ་གང་ཡིན་པ་དཔྱད་པར་འདོད།

12 རང་ཉིད་ལ་མིན་ཏེ་ཁྱེད་ཚོར་ཞབས་ཕྱི་ཞུས་པ་དེ་ལུང་སྟོན་པ་རྣམས་ལ་མངོན་པར་གྱུར། ད་ལྟ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཞིང་ཁམས་ནས་མངགས་པའི་དམ་པའི་ཐུགས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་དབང་གི་སྒོ་ནས་ཆོས་སྟོན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཁྱེད་ཚོ་ལ་འཕྲིན་བཟང་དེ་བསྒྲགས། དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཕོ་ཉ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་དོན་དེ་ཚོ་མཁྱེན་པར་འདོད།

 

 

1 Peter Chapter 1 verses 3-12

 

Your True Native Land (‘khrungs-yul) is Heaven

 

Citizens of Heaven Living in Exile (verse 3)

Peter writes, saying, ‘You believers are like exiles from heaven, temporarily resident (gnas-gyar-ba) here on earth, because God – who raised Jesus – has caused you to be born into a new lasting (rtag-tu) life as citizens of heaven’. See what else he says:

 

You have a Share (bgo-skal) in Heaven (verse 4)

If you live away from your native land your home and fields can be lost (yal-wa), but Father God’s promise to you of a share in the land of heaven is imperishable (mi-‘jig-pa), without impurity (dri-ma-med-pa), and unfading (mi-yal-wa).

 

God will Guard Your Share (verse 7)

More valuable to God than purified gold (which is a perishable material – dngos-po – and illusion) is your faith; that faith is true (bden-pa); it is not an illusion (sgyu-ma-med-pa) and is permanent (rtag-pa).

 

All is to be Revealed at the Last Time (verses 5-7)

God’s power will keep safe your share, and preserve your faith in salvation (thar-pa) through all your present troubles until you actually see Jesus at the last time.

 

Your Privilege of Knowing the Good News (verses 10-12)

Before 2000 years ago not even the prophets understood that it would have to be by his suffering for us that the Messiah Christ would make possible our liberation.

 

A Great Reason for Joy

God is to be worshiped, writes Peter. ‘Rejoice!’ and again ‘rejoice!’

In the rest of his letter Peter explains how to live our lives as temporary residents here on earth in preparation for meeting Jesus, and how we should think about suffering when we are persecuted. Jesus told Peter to feed believers like new-born babes; for that reason it is important for us to study what Peter wrote.
