What we can learn from the letters of Peter about practice of faith in Christ in times of uncertainty.
པེ་ཏྲོ་གཉིས་པ། 3:10
10 འོན་ཀྱང་གཙོ་བོའི་ཉིན་མོ་དུས་ངེས་མེད་ཀྱི་རྐུན་མ་དང་འདྲ་བར་ཡོང༌། དེ་དུས་ནམ་མཁའ་འུར་སྒྲ་དང་བཅས་པར་འདའ་ཞིང༌། འབྱུང་བ་རྣམས་མེ་ཡིས་འཇིག་པར་འགྱུར། ས་གཞི་དང་དེའི་སྟེང་གི་དངོས་པོ་ཐམས་ཅད་བསྲེག་པར་འགྱུར།
2 Peter 3:10
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
Peter’s message and warning against false prophets and teachers draws attention to the connotation “The Day of the Lord“.
“The Day of the Lord” is an eschatological term referring to a few things together
- Final judgement
- End of the world
- Coming of the Messiah
- Tribulation
Why did Peter mentioned “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief“?
It was firstly meant as a remainder what Jesus taught him about the Day of the Lord
མད་ཐཱ། 24:36-37
36 ཉིན་མོ་དེ་དང་དུས་ཚོད་དེའི་སྐོར་ཡབ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་མ་གཏོགས། སུས་ཀྱང་མི་ཤེས། དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་བཞུགས་གནས་ཀྱི་ཕོ་ཉ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་མི་ཤེས་ལ་སྲས་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་མི་ཤེས།
37 མིའི་རིགས་ཀྱི་བུའི་འབྱོན་པ་ནི་ནོ་ཨའི་དུས་ལྟར་ཡིན་པར་འགྱུར།
Matthew 24:36-37
36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man
What Jesus said to His disciples clearly stated God’s will not to reveal to us humankind the exact date and there was no explanation provided.
It is shocking and horrifying to know in our generation how may had made public prediction of exactly which day and year of Jesus’ return and the masses of people who actually believed and were led astray and perished together!
A key problem with misleading predictions of exact date of Jesus’ return overthrow our foundation of faith in Jesus to walk the path of repentance and obedience in our daily lives.
Peter’s message “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief” is meant to warn us the certainty of God’s judgement but which day will God judge we do not know and we were being specifically instructed by Jesus to be ready.
“and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.”
Our duty to be prepared and ready for the Lord’s return by means of living in obedience to Jesus’ teachings and warnings against sins is to observe God’s established rule of sowing and reaping.
རོ་མཱ་པ། 6:22
འོན༌ཀྱང༌། ད་ལྟ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་སྡིག་པ་ལས་ཐར་ཞིང་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་གཡོག་པོར་གྱུར༌པས། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་དམ་པར་འགྱུར་བའི་འབྲས་བུ་ཐོབ༌པ་དང་། དེའི་མཇུག་འབྲས་ནི་མཐའ་མེད་པའི་ཚེ་སྲོག་ཡིན་ནོ།།
Romans 6:22
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.
Our practice to embrace holiness and righteous living as according to our faith in Christ Jesus will bear the fruits of eternal life with God.
Salvation is by faith through grace but we must not fall back to sins and risk destroying our future fruits of eternal life with God.
In the days of Peter, disciples and believers were mocked and persecuted for believing and following the example of Jesus to live in holiness and obedience.
There were ongoing conflicts with those who expected a different kind of savior who don’t require repentance and obedience on the part of followers and believers.
What Jesus taught about sowing and reaping is also revealed to us through His apostle John about future events
མངོན་པ། 22:12-13
12-13 ཡེ་ཤུ་ཡིས་གསུང་གི་ཡོད་རེད། “ལྟོས་དང་།” “ང་མགྱོགས་པོ་ཡོང་གི་ཡོད། མི་ཞིག་གིས་བྱ་བ་
བཟང་ངན་གང་བྱས་པ་ལ་གཞིགས་པའི་ང་མི་མི་རེ་ངོ་རེ་ལ་བཟང་པོ་ལ་བཟང་ལན་དང་ངན་པ་བྱེད་མཁན་ལ་
ཉེས་པ་གཏང་ག་ཡོང་གི་ཡིན། ཐོག་མ་དང་མཐའ་མ་དེ་ང་ཡིན། ངས་ཚང་མ་འགོ་ཚུགས་པ་དང་དེ་ཚོ་
ཚང་མ་མཇུག་སྒྲིལ་བ་བཟོ་གི་ཡོད།”[ངས་རྟེན་འབྲེལ་གྱི་དངོས་པོ་ཚང་མ་འབྱུང་བ་དང་དེའི་རིགས་ཚང་མ་
མཐའ་ཅན་བཟོ་གི་ཡོད།]
Revelation 22:12
“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
So the day of the Lord can be a day of condemnation or for blessing, depends if we live in obedience or disregards Jesus’s teachings and warnings.
For those who with patience and perseverance continued in faith and obedience will enter into their full blessing of eternal life with Christ. Those who refused the path of repentance and obedience run the risk of being forfeited of eternal life with God.
Peter’s message was also in refutation against false prophets and teacher who either reject “the day of the Lord” and or reinterpreted it to means something else except the judgement of God.
Peter was warning believers and disciples to be careful not to be led astray from the call for repentance and holiness living to be prepared and ready for Christ’s return.
As the numbers of believers enlarged and were spread abroad there were problems of moral corruptions and change of interpretation of scripture truth by misleading characters which cause the sheep to go astray.
Peter not forgetting what Jesus instructed him to do for the sheep

John 21:15-17
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
Peter had remained steadfast in feeding the flock till his execution by Nero.
It is of certainty the world will be judged at God’s appointed time and we are to seek out the salvation of God made available through Jesus Christ and to stand firm in this faith and hope in Jesus.
Reject sin and embrace the path of righteousness and holiness as taught by Jesus.
