Remember the Parable of the Sower
མད་ཐཱ། 13:23 – ས་བོན་ས་རྒྱུ་བཟང་པོ་ལ་འཐོར་བ་ནི་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་བཀའ་ཐོས་ནས་རྟོགས་པའི་མི་དེ་ཡིན། འབྲས་བུ་སྨིན་ཏེ། འབྲས་བུ་ཁ་ཤས་ལྡབ་བརྒྱ་དང༌། ཁ་ཤས་ལྡབ་དྲུག་ཅུ། ཁ་ཤས་ལྡབ་སུམ་ཅུ་བཅས་སྨིན་” ཞེས་གསུངས།
Matthew 13:23 – As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”
The key to being fruitful for Jesus is “the one who hears the word and understands it”. Knowing and understanding the words of God is foundational to obedience and doing the will of God.
བཀོད་པ 3 – Genesis 3
This lesson addresses three key issues revealed in Genesis 3
1) God’s provision of atonement and redemption for Man after Adam and Eve sinned against God
2) Deception that caused Adam and Eve to fall into sin
3) What does scripture teaches us about “sin”
The above three key issues will be covered in three separate post due to the details that needed to be addressed in each subject.
Part 1 – God’s provision of atonement and redemption for Man after Adam and Eve sinned against God
Genesis 3 recorded the Fall of Man, a universally accepted doctrine and teaching among churches and denominations. In brief it addresses Man’s sin against God and the result of separation between Man and God and the loss of eternal life for the human race.
A highly controversial matter and debated even till today has to do with God’s warning to Adam found in Genesis 2, before Adam sinned against God
བཀོད་པ 2:15-17
15དེ་ནས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་མི་དེ་ལ་ཨེ་དྷེན་གྱི་ལྡུམ་རའི་ནང་ཞིང་ལས་དང་། སྲུང་བའི་ཕྱིར་དེར་བཞག་གནང་ངོ་། 16ཁོང་གིས་མི་དེ་ལ། ལྡུམ་རའི་ཤིང་སྡོང་གི་འབྲས་བུ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ཟ་ཐུབ། 17འོན་ཀྱང་བཟང་ངན་རྟོགས་པའི་ཤིང་གི་འབྲས་བུ་ཟ་མི་ཆོག གལ་སྲིད་དེ་ལས་ཟས་ན་ཁྱོད་དེ་ཉིན་རང་ཤི་བར་འགྱུར་ཞེས་གསུངས་སོ།
Genesis 2:15-17 – 15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
God explicitly warned Adam “in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” but in Genesis 3 after Adam and Eve transgressed against God’s word they did not die the same day but were sent out of the Garden of Eden and following the records of Genesis 4 and 5 Adam lived for nine hundred and thirty years!
The focus on Biblical definition of “day” have a group of preachers and commentators suggesting that “day” mentioned in Genesis 2 not to be taken as literal but indicative of a thousand years. That kind of man-made idea and explanation raise questions and doubt about the character of God being faithful and unchanging with regards to both His proclaimed blessings and judgements.
I believe God was not being ambiguous in what He said to Adam in Genesis 2 as very clear warning and consequences of disobedience. God’s warning and judgement are irrevocable as His blessings are also irrevocable. So when God warned Adam “in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” it actually means and refers to the same day of occurrence and offense.
There was something God did for Adam and Eve that same day they committed their sin of disobedience and it demonstrated God’s redemption for Man and they were spared the death penalty that should befall them the same day. In other words after Adam and Eve sinned against God they were expected to die the death penalty the same day but God did something to provide them redemption and that demonstrated God’s mercy.
God’s redemption is so very important and fundamental to our faith in the Messiah that we need to get a full complete understanding of how and by what means God redeem us from sin and death because God have only one way one method of redemption while the world we are living in is flooded with all sorts of man-made ideologies about self-help.
Back in Genesis 3 it was God reaching out to Adam “where are you?” (Genesis 3:9) when Adam and Eve went hiding in shame after being overcame by their quilt of disobedience against God’s words.
Using scripture to interpret scripture it is very clear that God provided atonement for Adam and Eve and therefore their punishment for sin, which is death, on that same day was delayed but eventually Adam and Eve did die without access to the fruit of the Tree of Life which could have allowed them to live forever in their physical body as created by God.
What God did in Genesis 3 to provide atonement for Adam and Eve need to be understood from the totality of the Torah or Pentateuch consisting of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, all written and recorded by Moses under instructions from God.
The Torah or Pentateuch is actually one complete document. Moses who wrote Genesis also wrote Leviticus which explained in full details about sin and atonement sacrifices as required by God. What God said to Moses in Leviticus was more than just inspired words they were direct divine communications between God and Moses.
In Genesis 3:21 what God did to provide atonement for Man can be explained in details with reference to Leviticus 7:1-8

Genesis 3:21 – And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them
ལེ་ཝི 7:1-8

7སྡིག་པའི་མཆོད་པ་དང་ཉེས་པའི་མཆོད་པ་གཉིས་ཀར་ཁྲིམས་གཅིག་རང་གི་ཉམས་ལེན་སྤྱེད་ཆོག་པ་ཡིན། མཆོད་པའི་ཤ་དེ་ནི་མཆོད་འབུལ་བྱེད་མཁན་བླ་མ་རང་ལ་བདག་རྒྱུ་ཡིན། 8དེ་བཞིན་སྦྱིན་སྲེག་ཏུ་འབུལ་བའི་དུད་འགྲོའི་པགས་པ་དེའང་མཆོད་འབུལ་བྱེད་མཁན་བླ་མ་རང་ལ་བདག་རྒྱུ་ཡིན།
Leviticus 7:1-8 – “This is the law of the guilt offering. It is most holy. 2 In the place where they kill the burnt offering they shall kill the guilt offering, and its blood shall be thrown against the sides of the altar. 3 And all its fat shall be offered, the fat tail, the fat that covers the entrails, 4 the two kidneys with the fat that is on them at the loins, and the long lobe of the liver that he shall remove with the kidneys. 5 The priest shall burn them on the altar as a food offering to the Lord; it is a guilt offering. 6 Every male among the priests may eat of it. It shall be eaten in a holy place. It is most holy. 7 The guilt offering is just like the sin offering; there is one law for them. The priest who makes atonement with it shall have it. 8 And the priest who offers any man’s burnt offering shall have for himself the skin of the burnt offering that he has offered.
God did not just pull out a skin from nowhere. God did for Adam the atonement sacrifice as He revealed to Moses and were recorded in Leviticus.
In Genesis 4 when Abel, the second son of Adam, present His offering to God from “the firstlings of his flock, and from their fat ones” (Genesis 4:4) he did so following what he learned from Adam’s experience of receiving atonement from God.
Important lessons to learn from what God did in Genesis 3
A) Man’s redemption from sin and death was initiated by God. It was God reaching out to Man when Adam and Eve went into hiding. Therefore salvation is of God not Man. Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves using fig-leaves and hid among the tress but that did not help them escape judgement and consequences. I believe Adam and Eve knew very well and expected to face the death penalty as God warned them and thus they went into hiding for fear and guilt.
B) God provided His choice of atonement that spared Man of the immediate death penalty. If we are to study the Torah or Pentateuch as one complete document then we shall understand God’s specifications, details, and expectations for Man to receive the proper atonement and forgiveness. In short there is no other atonement acceptable to God to save us from sin and death except the one approved by God Himself. And God’s choice of atonement must be according to His words because Man sinned against God’s word through disobedience and therefore must be redeemed through obedience to God’s words. Obedience based entirely on God’s word as reversal of our sin action due to disobedience. The totality of Torah or Pentateuch actually teaches obedience to God’s word as condition to receive His blessing and disobedience resulting in judgement.
C) Forfeiture of access to the Tree of Life and loss of eternal life for Man as inescapable consequence of sin. Although Adam and Eve were spared the immediate death penalty but they had to leave the Garden of Eden where the Tree of Life is and therefore losing their access to eternal life. The Tree of Life not mentioned anymore in scripture until Revelation 22 when God brings about His complete restoration for His creation through His chosen Messiah. God’s provision of atonement for Adam and Eve that same day spared them of the immediate death penalty but there is the future restoration back to eternal life with God which needed to be dealt with and that is part of the whole compete redemption work of God for Man. After Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden God continue to reach out to Man calling for repentance and obedience that we may have hope of eternal life restored with God.
For us to know and understand the complete redemption work of God we need to start from Genesis and continue to what Jesus did as recorded in scripture because God’s salvation does not just involves the individuals but communities and nations and the whole of His creations.
When Jesus the Christ appeared as recorded in the Gospel this was what John the Baptist said
ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 1:29 – དེའི་ཕྱི༌ཉིན། ཁྲུས་གསོལ་མཁན་ཡོ་ཧ་ནན་གྱིས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་རང་གི་གམ་དུ་ཕེབས་པ་མཐོང་སྟེ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ལྟོས༌དང༌། དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ལུ་གུ་སྟེ་འཇིག་རྟེན་མི་རྣམས་ཀྱི་སྡིག་པ་བསལ་མཁན་ནི་ཁོང་ཉིད་ཡིན།
John 1:29 – The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
The same author who recorded what John the Baptist said penned a powerful introduction about Jesus the Messiah

John 1:1-13

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 17:1-5
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
The most controversial, hotly debated, bitterly disputed, never ending discussion about Jesus is His resurrection from the dead and the same author witnessed and recorded

John 20:24-29
24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
The life, ministry, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus is about obedience to God’s word leading to full ultimate atonement forgiveness and restoration to eternal life with God for Man.
From the time of Genesis God already revealed His way of redemption through His provision of atonement and restoration based on obedience to His words.
We must not be quick to assume back in that same day Adam and Eve sinned against God they would had easily received God’s atonement for them. For since they exercised their will to disobeyed God’s word they could had continued their acts of rebellion against God and the consequence would be death the same day as God warned.
God provided His atonement and Adam had to repent of his disobedience and trust God for forgiveness and restoration. And from the time of Moses God have been preparing all people including Jews and Gentile to receive the complete ultimate redemption in the Messiah through obedience and trust.
Jesus the Messiah taught us to trust and obey God’s words.
