To Believe in Jesus – Part 3
John recorded Jesus first miracle.
John 2:1-11
On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”
11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
What was it about turning water into wine that the disciple believed in Jesus?
What Jesus did was not some kind of magic show for entertainment!
What Jesus did could invoke memory of Moses confrontation with Pharaoh in Exodus.
God sent Moses to deliver that generation of Israel from bondage in Egypt and after Pharaoh rejected, the first demonstration of God’s power through Moses was turning the water flowing in the Nile into blood or blood-like.
Although back in the time of Pharaoh and Moses the turning of water into blood was judgement, in the Gospel of John the turning of water into wine by Jesus during wedding was an expression of joy and blessing.
Interestingly there were no mentions who were the bride and bridegroom.
It was no coincidence that Cana where Jesus turned water into wine was Nathanael’s hometown. In John 1, John noted a dis-believing remark from Nathanael when he was first told of Jesus being the Messiah. What Nathanael said was not of negative and condemning tone but more of an attitude of not expecting anything remarkable to arise from Jesus’ hometown –
John 1:43-51
43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Nathanael said “Can anything good come out of Nazareth” in obvious reference to Jesus of Nazareth!
Nathanael did have an immediate change of mind upon meeting Jesus!
What does it take for us to believe in Jesus?
Was it necessary for Jesus to do that miracle turning water into wine?
The reference to the wedding in Cana starts with this important info “On the 3rd day“. If we trace the record sequences of the Gospel of John 1 and 2 we could see that was referring to the 3rd day after John the Baptist bear witness to Jesus “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
We now have the benefit of hindsight; we know Jesus had died on the cross and on the third day resurrected, and ascended to the Father.
We know Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
The miracle of Jesus turning water into wine had generated many discussions and allegoric interpretation of wine and wedding but the main point is to bear record to the identity of Jesus as the Messiah sent of God to redeem man from sin and death. Therefore John’s message had the repeated theme “believe in Jesus”.
