ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 3:25-30
25དུས༌དེར། ཡོ་ཧ་ནན་གྱི་སློབ་མ་རྣམས་དང་ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་ཞིག་གཙང་སྦྲའི་ལུགས་སྲོལ་ཐད་ལ་རྩོད་པ་བྱུང༌བས། 26ཡོ་ཧ་ནན་གྱི་དྲུང་དུ་ཡོང་སྟེ་ན༌རེ། རཱབ་པེ་ལགས། དེ་སྔོན་ཡོར་དན་གཙང་པོའི་ཕ་རོལ་ཏུ་ཁྱེད་དང་མཉམ་དུ་བཞུགས་ཤིང་། ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་བདེན་དཔང་བྱས་པ་དེས་ད་ལྟ་ཁྲུས་གསོལ་མཛད་ཀྱིན༌འདུག མི་ཀུན་ཀྱང་ཁོང་གི་དྲུང་དུ་འགྲོ་བཞིན་ཡོད་ཅེས་ཞུས་པ༌ལ། 27ཡོ་ཧ་ནན་གྱིས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། གལ་ཏེ་ནམ་མཁའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་ནས་གནང་བ་མིན་ན་མི་ཞིག་ལ་ཅི་ཡང་འཐོབ་མི་སྲིད། 28ཡང་དེ་སྔོན་བདག་གིས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ང་ནི་སྐྱབས་མགོན་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་མིན༌ཏེ། སྐྱབས་མགོན་མཱ་ཤི་ཀའི་སྔོན་དུ་མངགས་པ་དེ་ཡིན་ཞེས་སྨྲས་མྱོང་བ༌ལྟར། ད་ལྟ་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་ཀྱང་ང་རང་ལ་བདེན་དཔང་བྱས་ཆོག༌པ་ཡིན། 29བག་མ་ལེན་མཁན་ནི་མག་པ་ཡིན༌ཏེ། ཁོའི་གྲོགས་པོ་ལངས་ནས་བསྡད་ཅིང་མག་པའི་སྐད་ཐོས་པས་སེམས་ཤིན་ཏུ༌དགའ། གྲོགས་པོ་དེ་བཞིན་དུ་བདག་ཀྱང་དགའ་སྤྲོས་ཁེངས༌པ་ཡིན། 30དེ་བས་ཁོང་ཉིད་འཕེལ་ཞིང་ང་རང་འགྲིབ་པར་འགྱུར་དགོས་སོ།།
John 3:25-30
25 Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
A certain Jews had questions and discussion about “purification” and what does this “purification” issue had to do with John the Baptist and Jesus?
As mentioned in the previous few lessons, the Pharisees and the Sadducees who hold key positions within the Jewish council the Sanhedrin, they had too much influences over the daily lives of the Jews especially with regards to redemption and preparing to receive the Messiah, and in particular their teachings and observations of “purification”.
Apparently whatever concerns, questions, and discussions they had about “purification” had to do about whatever differences they had between the Jewish council and John the Baptist and Jesus about doing the will of God and to be in favor with God.
There were obvious differences in how these council members of the Sanhedrin interpreted scripture as compared to what was taught by Jesus and John the Baptist.
Since this discussion about “purification” happened in the backdrop of baptism (water baptism) as officiated by John the Baptist in obedience to the will of God and followed through with Jesus.
We already know from Gospel records the Sanhedrin as n institute rejected the baptism of John the Baptist although there were individuals who broke ranks with the council and went ahead to John the Baptist to be baptized.
The context such disagreements would well be about repentance and fruits of repentance as John the Baptist did had an explicit lecture about it –

7འོན༌ཀྱང༌། ཡོ་ཧ་ནན་གྱིས་ཕ་རུ་ཤི་པ་དང་སཱ་ཅུ་སེ་པ་མང་པོ་ཞིག་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱི་ཁྲུས་གསོལ་མཛད་པའི་གནས་ལ་ཡོང་བ་གཟིགས༌ཏེ། ཁོང་གིས་མི་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། དུག་སྦྲུལ་གྱི་རྒྱུད་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་སུ་ཞིག་གིས་མ་འོངས་པའི་ཐུགས་ཁྲོ་ལས་འབྲོ་བར་བསྟན༌ནམ། 8དེ་བས་ན་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་འགྱོད་བཤགས་དང་མཐུན་པའི་འབྲས་བུ་ལེགས་པོར་སྐྱེད༌ཅིག 9ཁྱོད་ཅག་གི་སེམས་སུ་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་ནི་ངེད་ཅག་གི་ཡབ་མེས་ཡིན་ཞེས་མ་སེམས༌ཤིག ངས་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་སྨྲ༌སྟེ། དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་རྡོ་འདི་དག་ལས་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་ལ་བུ་རྒྱུད་འབྱུང་བར་མཛད་ནུས༌སོ།། 10ད་ནི་སྟ་རེ་སྡོང་རྩར་བཞག་ཡོད༌དེ། ཤིང་སྡོང་གང་ལ་འབྲས་བུ་ལེགས་པོ་མི་སྨིན་པ་དེ་བཅད་ནས་མེའི་ནང་དུ་འཕེན་པར༌ངེས། 11ངས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་ཆུ་ཡིས་ཁྲུས་གསོལ་བྱེད༌ཅིང༌། དེ་ནི་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་འགྱོད་བཤགས་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཡིན༌མོད། འོན་ཀྱང་བདག་གི་རྗེས་སུ་བདག་ལས་ཀྱང་མཐུ་སྟོབས་ཆེ་བ་ཞིག་ཕེབས་ཡོང་ངེས༌ཏེ། ང་ནི་ཁོང་གི་ལྷམ་འཁྱེར་མཁན་དུའང་མི་འོས༌སོ། །ཁོང་གིས་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་དམ་པའི་ཐུགས་ཉིད་དང་མེས་ཁྲུས་གསོལ་མཛད་པར༌འགྱུར། 12ཁོང་གིས་ཕྱག་ཏུ་ཚེབ་བཟུང་ནས་རང་གི་གཡུལ་ཁ་གཙང་དག་ལེགས་པོར་མཛད་པ༌དང༌། གྲོ་བང་མཛོད་དུ་བསྡུ་བར༌འགྱུར། འོན་ཀྱང་ཕུབ་མ་དེ་དག་ཞི་བ་མེད་པའི་མེ་རུ་བསྲེག་པར་ངེས་ཞེས་གསུངས༌སོ།།
Matthew 3:7-12
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
The Jews who raised the questions and discussion about “purification” could be addressing the Jewish council’s teachings about “purification” in contrast to what Jesus and John the Baptist taught about repentance –

1དེ་ནས་ཕ་རུ་ཤི་པ་དང་མཁན་པོ་རྣམས་ཡེ་རུ་སཱ་ལེམ་ནས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུའི་དྲུང་དུ་ཡོང༌སྟེ། 2ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ཐུགས་སྲས་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཅིའི་ཕྱིར་གནའ་མིའི་ལུགས་སྲོལ་དང་འགལ་བར་བྱེད༌དམ། ཁོ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ལག་པ་མ་བཀྲུས་པར་བག་ལེབ་ཟའོ་ཞེས་པ༌ལ། 3སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་རང་གི་ལུགས་སྲོལ་བསྲུང་ཕྱིར་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་བཀའ་དང་འགལ་བར་བྱེད་པ༌ཅི།
Matthew 15:1-3
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
མད་ཐཱ། 15:10-20

Matthew 15:10-20
10 And he (Jesus) called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” 12 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” 13 He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” 15 But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.” 16 And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. 20 These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”
The key problem to be address is “sin”.
Modern day Christians do struggles with this subject about “sin”, how do we define sin? We know sin damages our relationship with God and we know we need to trust Jesus for forgiveness, but how do we deal with sin in our daily lives?
All those “defilement” Jesus spoken of in Matthew 15 are what Jesus defined as sinful thoughts which can eventually result in acts of sin. Therefore Jesus preached repentance for the sake of entering the kingdom of God and that means if we want to enter the kingdom of God we must turn away from what is actually defined by Jesus as sin. Of course the Pharisee and the council had sharp disagreement with Jesus about sin and the judgement of God.
But for us who believe in Jesus we know we need to confess and acknowledge our sins before God and to repent of our sins by turning away from our acts of disobedience against God’s teachings as taught by Jesus.
That group of Jews who were against Jesus had sharp disagreement about what Jesus actually taught about sin and judgement of God and therefore continued in their traditions of “purification”
The common folks among the Jews were in difficult position to choose between John the Baptist, Jesus, and the council of the Sanhedrin. So therefore there were people who went back and forth between Jesus, John the Baptist, and the Sanhedrin.
Eventually those who believed in John the Baptist and Jesus and went ahead to do repentance as taught by Jesus they had made the better decision –

6ཁོང་གི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་བསྒྱུར་ནས་ཁོང་ལ་སྨོན་ལམ་འདེབས།
ད་ལྟ་ཁོང་ནི་ཐག་ཉེར་ཡོད་པ་ཡིན།
7སྤྱོད་ངན་རང་གི་བྱེད་ལུགས་དོར་བཅུག་ནས། དེ་ཚོའི་བསམ་བློ་གཏོང་ཚུལ་བསྒྱུར་རུ་བཅུག།
དེ་ཚོ་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ང་ཚོའི་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཁོང་གི་ཕྱོགས།
དེ་ཚོ་བློ་ཁ་བསྒྱུར་དུ་འཇུག་ཅིག་དང་། ཁོང་ནི་བྱམས་བརྩེ་བཟོད་གསོལ་གནང་རྒྱུར་མགྱོགས།
8གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཁོང་གིས་བཀའ་གནང་བ། ང་ཡི་བསམ་བློ་ཁྱོད་ཚོའི་བསམ་བློ་ལྟར་མེད།
ང་ཡི་ལམ་ནི་ཁྱོད་ཚོའི་ལམ་མི་འདྲ།
9ས་ལས་མཐོ་རིས་ཇི་ལྟར་མཐོ་བ་ལྟར། ཁྱོད་སྟེང་ང་ཡི་ལམ་དང་བསམ་བློ་མཐོ།
Isaiah 55:6-9
6 “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; 7 let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For us who trust in Jesus and the words of God, we know we have a better future in Christ, amen.
