To Believe in Jesus – Part 27

 

To believe in Jesus is to have a heart of reverence towards God’s word in addition to doing acts of repentance

 

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 4:29-30

29ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཤོག་དང་། འདིར་མི་ཞིག་ཡོད་པར་ལྟོས་ཤིག དེས་ངས་བྱས་པའི་དོན་ཐམས་ཅད་རེ་རེ་བཞིན་གསུངས་པས་ཁོ་རང་ནི་སྐྱབས་མགོན་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་ཡིན་ཀྱང་སྲིད་ཅེས་སྨྲས་པ༌དང༌། 30མི་དེ་རྣམས་ཀྱང་གྲོང་རྡལ་ལས་ཕྱིར་ཐོན་ཏེ་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུའི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་ཆས༌སོ།།

John 4:29-30

29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.

 

In previous post we discussed the high possibility that these Samaritans were well prepared to receive the Messiah as they were instructed in the writings of Moses and the Prophets.

Jesus had made references to the prophet Isaiah not once but a few occasions and the people of those days must had been familiar with the writings of Isaiah especially those portions that mentioned the coming Messiah

 

ཡེ་ཤ་ཡཱ། 61:1-4

1གཙོ་བོ་ཡ་ཝཱེའི་ཐུགས་ཉིད་ང་ཡི་སྟེང་དུ་བཞུགས་ཏེ། གང་ལ་ཞེ་ན། དབུལ་པོ་རྣམས་ལ་འཕྲིན་བཟང་སྒྲོག་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཁོང་གིས་བདག་ལ་སྣུམ་གྱིས་བྱུགས་ཤིང་བསྐོས་པའོ། །སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཅན་ལ་སེམས་གསོ་བྱེད་པ་དང་། བཙོན་པ་རྣམས་ལ་ཐར་པའི་འཕྲིན་བཟང་བསྒྲག་པ། བཀག་སྡོམ་ཐེབས་པ་རྣམས་ལ་ཐར་པ་བསྒྲག་པ། 2དཀོན་མཆོག་ཡ་ཝཱེའི་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་གནམ་ལོ་དང་། ང་ཚོའི་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ལན་འཇལ་བའི་ཉིན་མོ་དེ་བསྒྲག་པ་དང་། ཡིད་སྐྱོ་བ་རྣམས་ལ་སེམས་གསོ་གཏོང་བ། 3ཛ་ཡན་གྱི་སྡུག་གིས་མནར་བཞིན་པ་རྣམས་བརྒྱན་ཏེ། ཁོ་ཚོར་ཐལ་རྡུལ་གྱི་ཚབ་ཏུ་ལ་ཐོད་དང་། མྱ་ངན་གྱི་ཚབ་ཏུ་དགའ་སྤྲོ་ཡི་སྣུམ། སེམས་ཤུགས་ཉམས་པའི་ཚབ་ཏུ་བསྟོད་པའི་གྱོན་ཆས་བཅས་གནང་བར་མངགས་པ་ཡིན། ཁོང་རང་ཉིད་ལ་གཟི་བརྗིད་འཐོབ་པའི་ཕྱིར་དུ། དེ་དག་ལ་དྲང་བདེན་གྱི་བེ་ཤིང་ཞེས་འབོད་ཅིང་། དཀོན་མཆོག་ཡ་ཝཱེ་ཁོང་གིས་སྐུ་དངོས་སུ་བཙུགས་པ་ཡིན། 4དེ་དག་གིས་གནའ་བོའི་ཞིག་རོ་རྣམས་བརྩིགས་ཤིང་སྔོན་ཆད་རྩ་གཏོར་བཏང་བ་རྣམས་ཡར་བཞེངས་ཏེ། མི་རབས་མང་པོར་ཞིག་རོར་ལུས་པའི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་རྣམས་སླར་གསོ་བར་བྱའོ། །

Isaiah 61:1-4

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;

3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

4 They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

 

Jesus at the beginning of His public ministry preached from this portion of Isaiah.

As recorded in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus was thrown out of synagogue when He speaks of the fulfillment of Isaiah prophesy and the blessing of God extended to the Gentiles.

 

ལོ་ཀུ 4:20-30

20ཁོང་གིས་དཔེ་ཆ་བསྒྲིལ་ནས་ཕྱིར་ཆོས་ཁང་གི་གཉེར་པ་ལ་བསྩལ་ཏེ་བཞུགས༌ཤིང༌། ཆོས་ཁང་དུ་ཡོད་པའི་མི་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱིས་ཁོང་ལ་མིག་ཅེ་རེར་བལྟས་པ༌དང༌། 21ཁོང་གིས་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། གསུང་རབ་ཀྱི་མདོ་འདི་ནི་དེ་རིང་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་ཐོས་པའི་དུས་སུ་གྲུབ་པ་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས་སོ།། 22མི་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱིས་ཁོང་ལ་བསྟོད་བསྔགས་བརྗོད་ཅིང་ཁོང་གི་ཞལ་ལས་གསུངས་པའི་ཚིག་སྙན་མོ་ཐོས་ནས་ངོ་མཚར་བར་གྱུར། ཁོ་རྣམས་ན༌རེ། འདི་ནི་ཡོ་སེབ་ཀྱི་བུ་མ་ཡིན་ནམ་ཞེས་སྨྲས་སོ།། 23ཡང་ཁོང་གིས་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ཁྱོད་ཅག་ན༌རེ། སྨན་པ༌ལགས། ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་རང་ཉིད་གསོ་བར་བྱོས་ཞེས་པའི་ཁ་དཔེ་འདི་ང་ལ་སྦྱར་ངེས༌ཤིང༌། ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ཀཱ་ཕར་ན་ཧུམ་ནས་བྱས་པའི་བྱ་བ་ངེད་ཅག་གིས་ཐོས་པ་དེ་རྣམས་རང་གི་ཕ་ཡུལ་འདི་ནས་ཀྱང་བྱོས་ཤིག་ཅེས་བདག་ལ་སྨྲ་བར་འགྱུར་ཞེས་གསུངས་པ༌དང༌། 24ཡང་ཁོང་གིས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ངས་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་བདེན་པར་སྨྲ༌སྟེ། ལུང་སྟོན་པ་སུ་ཞིག་ལའང་རང་ཡུལ་ནས་བརྩི་བཀུར་མི་འཐོབ། 25བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་བདེན་པར་སྨྲ་སྟེ། ཡང་ཨེ་ལི་ཡཱའི་དུས་སུ། ལོ་གསུམ་དང་ཟླ་བ་དྲུག་གི་རིང་ལ་ཐན་པ་བྱུང་བས། ས་ཆ་ཡོངས་ལ་མུ་གེ་ཆེན་པོ་བྱུང་བ་དང་ཡེས་ར་ཨེལ་ཡུལ་དུ་ཡུགས་མོ་མང་པོ་ཡོད༌ནའང༌། 26ཨེ་ལི་ཡཱ་ནི་ཡུགས་མོ་དེ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་གམ་དུ་མ་མངགས༌པར། ཚི་ཏུན་ཡུལ་གྱི་ཁོང་གཏོགས་སཱ་རེ་ཕད་ཀྱི་ཡུགས་མོ་དེ་ཁོ་ནའི་གམ་དུ་མངགས། 27ཡང་ལུང་སྟོན་པ་ཨེ་ལི་ཤཱའི་དུས་སུ། ཡེས་ར་ཨེལ་གྱི་ས་ཆར་མཛེ་ནད་ཅན་མང་པོ་ཡོད༌ནའང༌། ཁོང་གིས་དེ་རྣམས་ལས་གཅིག་ཀྱང་གཙང་མར་མ་མཛད༌པར། སིར་ཡཱ་ཡུལ་གྱི་ནཱ་ཨ༌མན་ཁོ་ན་གཙང་མར་མཛད་ཅེས་གསུངས་པ་དང་། 28ཆོས་ཁང་དུ་ཡོད་པའི་མི་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱིས་གཏམ་དེ་ཐོས་རྗེས་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཁྲོས༌ཏེ། 29སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་གྲོང་རྡལ་ནས་ཕྱིར་བསྐྲད་པ༌དང༌། གྲོང་རྡལ་དེ་ནི་རི་སྟེང་དུ་ཆགས་ཡོད་ལ་མི་དེ་དག་གིས་ཁོང་ཉིད་གཡང་གཟར་དུ་འཕེན་ཕྱིར་བྲག་ཁ་རུ་ཁྲིད༌ནའང༌། 30སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་ནི་མི་དེ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་དཀྱིལ་ནས་ཐད་ཀར་ཕེབས༌སོ།།

Luke 4:20-30

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.

 

For what reason the Jews at the synagogue had such angry reactions against Jesus when He spoke of God’s blessing and forgiveness to the Gentiles?

Was it possible the Samaritans had already heard what happened to Jesus in Luke 4? And they were excited and looking forward to meet Jesus in person?

Was that the reason many Gentiles came seeking Jesus for help?

 

There were occasions Jesus was impressed by the expression of faith by Gentiles.

 

All the records of the Gospels were pointing to the obvious – that many Gentiles came to seek Jesus for salvation and forgiveness. Therefore it is not surprising from historical records that after the times of Acts of the Apostles the demographics of believers which started with majority Jews later shifted to majority Gentiles and today majority of believers worldwide are Gentiles.

Back to the situation in John 4 – by that time Jesus had that conversation with the woman at the well, the Samaritans were more than prepared to meet the Messiah! Those who came forward after hearing what the woman said had probably heard of Jesus’ ministry before and were awaiting opportunity to see Jesus in person!

 

To believe in Jesus is to believe in the promise of God for restoration

 

It is possible the Samaritans came with a ready heart to receive the blessings of God!
