To Believe in Jesus – Part 64
John 6:22-27
22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”
The gospel writer John specifically noted “on the next day” and that is referring to after the previous day when Jesus fed the multitude who wanted to install Him as king.
Although Jesus is to be honored as king but what Jesus knew about the expectations of these Jew who wanted their choice of king to liberate them from Rome does not align with what Jesus had been preaching and teaching at that time.
So Jesus left them, and most likely went aside by Himself to pray. Nevertheless we read that the multitude were very fervent in seeking out Jesus!
When the multitude found Jesus again, they got a message from Jesus which may seem difficult to understand –
27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”
Why did Jesus say that?
What does He means food that endures to eternal life?
There is a passage from the prophet Isaiah that could be appropriate to address what happens here in John 6
Isaiah 55:1-9
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come; buy wine and milk without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.
3 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.
4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.
5 Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.
6 “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near;
7 let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For the post-exilic community of Jews after Babylon, this message of Isaiah 55 do speaks of restoration of Israel but with clear and explicit condition to listen and obey the teachings and instruction of Yahweh God.
To listen and obey the teachings and instruction of Yahweh God means to repent of our sinful ways which goes against the teachings of God.
In John 6, Jesus is repeating and emphasizing His call for repentance and obedience to God as their way to eternal life!
The food that we eat sustains our physical bodies but the words and teachings of Christ provide assurance of eternal life in the kingdom of God!
To be continue …
