Peter – Letters to the churches (12)

(1 Peter 4:1-6)

Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

Let Us Follow Confidently Christ’s Example

Believers who have given up sin (we sinned enough in the past) and you who are suffering for it now should keep on thinking in the same way as Christ Jesus did.

What to say? You must be encouraged, because the gospel was declared to you – including those of you are who are now dead – so that you may live from now on in the spirit. Don’t go back.

So, reject the taunting persecution of those who say, ‘You fools! Come on, join us in our wild living while you can. What you believers trust is just illusion; none of us can escape samsara (‘khor.wa).’ They are wrong.

Wrong, because in Christ we believers have escaped samsara. God’s day of judgment awaits both us and them, and all men who have ever lived according to their works and according to their faith.

(1 Peter 4:7-11)

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Let Us Live with the Last Day in Mind

Peter declares that the end-time could be tomorrow, even today; that day when we and you, as believers, will stand in the presence of God’s glory.

So, let us put aside all forms of selfishness; let us pray, love, serve and speak, with Jesus’ help, in such ways as we can, so as to show even now the power and the glory of God in our lives.

Peter ends with his prayer of praise, ‘That glory and authority are His alone. May it be so!’

(1 Peter 4:12-19)

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory[b] and of God rests upon you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And

“If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

The Suffering and Glory of Believers in the World

From the beginning there had been opposition against believers, such as Christ himself experienced, in places like Lystra in Galatia (see Acts 14:19), and Ephesus in Asia (Acts 19:23-20:1). It was to people bearing Christ’s name in such places that Peter wrote his letter. Did God perhaps tell Peter that great persecution was coming? In fact, not long after writing it such a time did come during the rule of the Emperor Nero.

The suffering would be so severe that it would be like the heat of the furnace fire which is used to purify gold. That ‘fire’ would purify believers for their salvation, and God’s glory would be seen in them. What else is there to say?

Verse summarises the teaching of the whole of Peter’s letter. ‘Keep on trusting and obeying because God is faithful.’
