Be Fruitful for Jesus – Foundation Class – Genesis 6

Remember the Parable of the Sower

Matthew 13:23 – As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

The key to being fruitful for Jesus is “the one who hears the word and understands it“. Knowing and understanding the words of God is foundational to obedience and doing the will of God.

Today’s lesson we are going to look into a very important event in human history, Noah’s Flood, because this incident speaks of human redemption more than judgement and God’s selection of who to redeem.

There is judgement and there is redemption.

Genesis 6:8-22

8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

9 These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them.” 22 Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.

What is written is Genesis 6 have been subjected to ongoing debate and dispute even by those who claimed to be Bible scholars due to the destruction of mankind as declared by God.

Noah’s Flood does speak of God’s judgement against sin and wickedness but the decision to destroy all except Noah seems absurd and horrifying to the minds of modern man.

The first difficult truth to establish is the death penalty already laid upon Man.

The Apostle Paul did a clear brief explanation about sin and judgement for Man

Romans 5:12 – Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—

Paul was referring to Adam the first man, and as the first man and head of all human to be born his sin against God brought judgement upon the whole human race.

God created Man with the blessed access to the Tree of Life that could allow them to live forever but Adam and Eve the first Man and Woman transgressed God’s law of prohibition imposed on the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil that leads to death.

Both Adam and Eve knew of the consequences and they did receive the death penalty as warned. They were separated from the Garden of Eden where the Tree of Life was and thus their option to eternal life was forfeited.

In this same series of lesson “Be Fruitful for Jesus – Foundation Class – Genesis 3 Part 1” a thorough explanation was provided why Adam and Eve did not suffer the death penalty the same day they sinned against God as warned but they did eventually die outside the Garden of Eden.

God in His judgement against Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 at the same day provided atonement and they were spared the immediate death penalty but they did suffer the consequences of sin as they were separated from the Garden of Eden and forfeited of their access to the Trees of Life and they eventually die outside the Garden of Eden.

From Adam to Noah, human descendants were to remember what God did to provide atonement for Man’s sin and to live in restrain but humanity fell deeper into sin.  In Genesis 6 what was written about Noah and the Flood we see a similar pattern of judgement and provision of redemption being played out.

God’s redemption is through His way of division, separation, and election based on trust and obedience to His words.  Therefore in Genesis 6:22 we read of how and why Noah was selected for redemption

Genesis 6:22 – Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.

Judgement is based on disobedience against God’s word and redemption is based on obedience to God’s word.

Noah was a man of obedience to God’s word. Noah acted according to what God said. The rest of the world population that continued in disobedience against God’s word perished.

There are lots of debate and disagreement about Noah’s Flood and even outright denial of scripture truth especially with regards to God’s judgement. And in consideration of the world’s population during the time of Noah, how humans had multiplied from Adam till Noah, the idea of millions even billions of people being destroyed in one event as declared by God seem totally absurd and ridiculous.

What happened in Noah’s Flood is very difficult inconvenient truth but we must not overlook or missed the most important key message of Genesis 6

REDEMPTION BASE ON OBEDIENCE

For Christians who zealously proclaimed Jesus as Savior, what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 to 7) was to be considered cardinal and especially these few conclusive points that actually speaks of obedience to God’s word

Matthew 7:13-27

13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

If we believe Jesus as Savior and Messiah we must acknowledge Jesus taught and expected His disciples to live in obedience to God’s words.

From the time of Genesis 3, to the time of Noah, to the day of Jesus in the Gospel, and until the future when the Messiah will return, God’s redemption for Man through His way of division, separation, and election based on trust and obedience to His words has never changed.

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus was preaching and teaching repentance of sin, to live in obedience to God’s words, and to worship and serve God through unconditional loyalty to God’s law. And in His conclusive points Jesus emphasis on entering the kingdom of God and finding life should be clear and obvious to His listeners that He is talking about Man’s ultimate redemption and restoration to eternal life with God based on trust and obedience to God’s words.

Jesus talks about the kingdom of God which is a big thing for our human mind to comprehend but the most important reward of entering the kingdom of God is the restored access to the Tree of Life

Revelation 22:1-5

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

The same Tree of Life we read about in Genesis was never mentioned again throughout scripture after Adam and Eve were separated from the Garden of Eden until what was revealed to the Apostle John in Revelation.

The Revelation of John shows us the future of God’s total and ultimate redemption of Man and creation and where those redeemed are restored to access the Tree of Life.

Jesus Himself made reference to Noah’s time in warning His disciples about His future return and since we believers are waiting for Jesus’ return we need to pay attention to this

Matthew 24:38-39

38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

In v39 “they were unaware” translated from the original Greek text “οὐκ ἔγνωσαν” (ou ginóskó) indicate a possible willful rejection of facts and truth rather than pure ignorant. Means to say people were told and warned about coming disaster but choose not to believe and accept as credible and therefore willfully reject such warnings.

That was exactly what happened in the days of Noah! And it is happening in our days!

Scripture truth revealed Noah was warned about the flood after his 500th years old and the flood did happen when he was 600 years old. So for about a hundred year people saw and knew why Noah was building the ark as according to God’s warning and instruction but how did people responded?

Important lesson to be learned here –

When people willfully reject the judgement of God they also reject the redemption of God.

There is judgement and there is redemption. Genesis 6 teaches us about God’s redemption for those who will believe His judgement and acted in repentance to obey God’s truth.

If we carefully observe our world environment today, majority of the world population don’t believe in the judgement of God! There are people who believe in the existence of God but don’t believe God will actually judge and destroy as what happened in the days of Noah and The Flood. And that’s where people missed God’s call for repentance and redemption.

There are arguments about young ones who are not in position to make decision of their own, and those who serve under human authority limited by choices of decision making, but there are issues of collective judgement and punishment and therefore those in position of authority must be careful of what to do with scripture truth.

The life of Noah and The Flood recorded in Genesis 6 teaches us to live in obedience to God’s word in order to be ready for God’s redemption.

The Fifth Trumpet is blown

1 Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen to the earth from the sky. The star was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.

2 He (the star) opened the shaft of the bottomless pit and smoke poured out of it – it was similar to smoke coming out of a huge furnace. The smoke blocked out the rays of the sun and the air became dark.

3 Locusts emerged from the smoke and descended upon the earth. They were given the ability to sting people, like that of scorpions.

4 They were told not to harm the grass or the plants or the trees. They were only permitted to attack the people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

5 The (stinging locusts) were authorized to inflict severe pain on people for five months. But they were not allowed to kill them. The terrible pain they inflicted was similar to that which a scorpion causes when it stings someone with its poisonous tail.

6 During those days people will long to die and they will seek for ways to take their own lives. However no matter how much they want to die they will be unable to. Death will elude them.

17 The horses and riders that I saw in my vision looked like this: The riders wore armour that was fiery red, dark blue and yellow. The heads of the horses were like heads of lions, and fire and smoke and burning sulphur billowed from their mouths.

18 One-third of all the people on earth were killed by three plagues. The people died as a consequence of the fire, and the smoke, and the burning sulphur, which came out of the mouths of the horses.

19 [I saw that] the power of these horses was in their mouths and in their tails. (Their tails had heads like snakes and they use them to injure people.)

20 But the rest of mankind who did not die in these plagues still refused to repent of their evil deeds [and turn to the living God]. They continued to worship demons and to prostrate before idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood – idols which can neither see, nor hear, nor walk!

21 Nor did they repent and turn away from committing murder. They refused to stop practising their sorceries (witchcraft) and did not abandon their sexual immorality or their thefts.

Be Fruitful for Jesus – Foundation Class – Genesis 3, Part 3

Be Fruitful for Jesus – Foundation Class – Genesis 3, Part 3

Remember the Parable of the Sower

Matthew 13:23 – As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

The key to being fruitful for Jesus is “the one who hears the word and understands it”. Knowing and understanding the words of God is foundational to obedience and doing the will of God.

3 – Genesis 3

We have covered part 1 and 2

1) God’s provision of atonement and redemption for Man after Adam and Eve sinned against God

2) Deception that caused Adam and Eve to fall into sin

This lesson will focus on “What does scripture teaches us about sin”?

Christian denominations worldwide have adopted the simplified definition of “sin” as “missing the mark” and the result is that we today are having to deal with never ending debate and man-made ideas and theology of what is this “mark” or “standard” people are missing that constitute sin.

When Man tries to redefine sin without God’s truth we are heading for nowhere conclusive. As long as Christians and churches do not have a clear definite universal agreement and conclusion about “sin” there will be no unity of faith with the one and only God who created the heavens and the Earth. Different denominations will continue to split and separate even among their own groups and eventually we see more churches losing their identity in Christ.

Losing our identity in Christ will lead to losing our faith and future in Christ! That seem to be exactly what happened in Genesis 3 when the serpent deceived and confused Eve’s understanding about disobeying God’s word which resulted in her acts of sin. Eve got tricked by the serpent but that deception was effective within Eve’s willingness to redefine sin as what was suggested by the serpent.

Important lesson to be learned here is that the first response to dealing with deception is to have a clear knowledge and understanding of what God actually teaches us about sin as revealed in scripture.

We must do away with man-made ideas about sin. Scripture already provided us specifics of what sin is, and variations of sin, magnitude and influence of sin, how God will judge Man because of acts of sin, and why Man need redemption and how we are to receive redemption because of these specifics of sin manifested in a person’s life.

Sin is in the act of disobedience against God’s word.

Sin must be clearly defined within the context and boundary of God’s word, God’s law, and God’s commandments. All these are clearly revealed in the Torah. The Apostle Paul explained the definition of sin in his letter to the congregations of Rome

Romans 7:7 – What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”

Scripture does in fact provide clear definition of sin.

God created the Earth and set the rules for Man

God’s positive rule to Man was to be fruitful and multiply and manage the Earth under God’s delegated authority.

God also set in place the law of prohibition – the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Therefore when Adam and Eve disregarded God’s law of prohibition and did what they were told not to do they committed acts of sin against God.

So scripture do provide clear details about what sin is about. From the time of Adam to Moses a lot of details were added which constitute God’s law and commandments but that does not mean before Moses’s time people does not know what sin is about. People already knew what sin is and the consequences of sin and the judgement of God. People knew what it means to go against the words of God.

What God did in Exodus 20 was to reinforce His expectation for Man to act in obedience to His words

Exodus 20:1-17

And God spoke all these words, saying,

2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

13 “You shall not murder.

14 “You shall not commit adultery.

15 “You shall not steal.

16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Exodus 20:1 the original Hebrew text read – דָבַר (dabar) Strong’s Concordance 1696 – God spoke.

What was recorded in Exodus 20 were actual direct divine communication between God and Moses. So Exodus was not man-made laws but God’s words to Man through Moses.

Exodus 34:27-28

27 And the Lord said to Moses, “Write these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights. He neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Words.

The original Hebrew text read – עֲשֶׂ֖רֶת (eseret) הַדְּבָרִֽים׃ (ha-devarim) “the Ten Words” instead of modern English translation of “commandments”. Again the important thing to note is that these are direct divine communication between God and Moses.

These words of God that are recorded in scriptures and teach us the righteousness of God and warn us against sin, they are not man-made ideas but original spoken words of God.

When Jesus appears this is what John testify

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Therefore Jesus preached repentance according to God’s truth and call for obedience to God’s word.

Jesus taught obedience to God’s word as key to overcome sin and the devil.

Jesus showed us God’s redemption for Man through obedience to God’s word.

The same John who wrote the Gospel of John also wrote these letters to the believers

1 John 1 – 2:1-6

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 John 2

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

To love God means to live in obedience to His words.

To serve and worship God means to obey His words.

Sin is clearly revealed as acts of disobedience against God’s words.

In Genesis we read how the serpent tempted and incited Eve to act against God’s word and both Adam and Eve sinned.

Scripture warns us about temptation to sin, and if and when we yield to temptation and acted and disobeyed God’s word we commit acts of sin.

Therefore scripture do provide clear definition of sin and we are to live in obedience to scripture truth to avoid sin, to repent from sin, and to persevere in our faith in God

Psalm 119:105-112

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules.
107 I am severely afflicted; give me life, O Lord, according to your word!
108 Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord, and teach me your rules.
109 I hold my life in my hand continually, but I do not forget your law.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for me, but I do not stray from your precepts.
111 Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.
112 I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever, to the end.

It is the words of God that teaches us what sin is all about.

It is also the words of God that teaches us to seek the righteousness of God, to repent of our sins, to walk with God though obeying His words and to await our full and complete redemption.
