མད་ཐཱ། 13:23 – ས་བོན་ས་རྒྱུ་བཟང་པོ་ལ་འཐོར་བ་ནི་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་བཀའ་ཐོས་ནས་རྟོགས་པའི་མི་དེ་ཡིན། འབྲས་བུ་སྨིན་ཏེ། འབྲས་བུ་ཁ་ཤས་ལྡབ་བརྒྱ་དང༌། ཁ་ཤས་ལྡབ་དྲུག་ཅུ། ཁ་ཤས་ལྡབ་སུམ་ཅུ་བཅས་སྨིན་” ཞེས་གསུངས།
Matthew 13:23 – As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”
The key to being fruitful for Jesus is “the one who hears the word and understands it“. Knowing and understanding the words of God is foundational to obedience and doing the will of God.
བཀོད་པ 3 – Genesis 3
Part 2 lesson of Genesis 3 – Deception that caused Adam and Eve to fall into sin
In Genesis 3 the mention of this serpent in particular revealed to us something unusual that we should not overlooked.
བཀོད་པ 3:1 – དཀོན་མཆོག་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་མཛད་པའི་སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་ལས་སྦྲུལ་ནི་གཡོ་སྒྱུ་ཅན་ཡིན་པས། དེ་ཡིས་བུད་མེད་ལ་འདྲི་པ། དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ལྡུམ་རའི་ཤིང་སྡོང་གང་ཞིག་གི་འབྲས་བུ་ལས་བདེན་པར་མ་ཟ་ཞེས་བཀའ་གནང་ངམ།
Genesis 3:1 – Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
This serpent actually can talk and communicate with human!
It should be noted there were only two recorded incident of animal talking to human in speeches and audible voices that both party could understand each other and that presumably in the language of what human can understand. This is not normal because there is no indication God created animals with natural ability to communicate with human through audible voices and speeches of any known human languages. So how did these two incidents happen?
In Genesis 3 we read the serpent talking to Eve and in Numbers 22:28-30 there was Balaam’s own donkey speaking with human voice. But both incidents had two different purpose and outcome.
In Numbers 22, it was God who enabled the donkey to talk and the purpose was to warn Balaam against his acts of willful sinning and the imminent death penalty.
In Genesis 3 “the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field” and no mention of God enabling the serpent to talk and the serpent’s message was to deceive Eve into sinning against God. So who or what is behind this serpent talking to Eve?
Different Christian denominations and opposing leaderships are clearly divided on many issues and doctrines but interestingly most if not all have the common agreement about who or what is behind this serpent in Genesis 3 talking to Eve.
Two scripture references from Revelation provided the bases of their agreement
མངོན་པ། 12:9 – འབྲུག་ཆེན་ནི་གནའ་བོའི་སྦྲུལ་དེ་ཡིན་པ་དང་མིང་ལ་བདུད་དང་། ཡང་ན་སཱ་ཏན་ཞེས་ཀྱང་ཟེར་ཏེ། འཇིག་རྟེན་ཡོངས་ལ་སླུ་བྲིད་གཏོང་མཁན་ཡིན། འབྲུག་ཆེན་དེ་ས་གཞིར་གཡུགས་ཤིང་ཁོའི་འཁོར་རྣམས་ཀྱང་ལྷན་དུ་སར་གཡུགས་པའོ།།
Revelation 12:9 – And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
མངོན་པ། 20:1-3
1ཡང་བདག་གིས་ཕོ་ཉ་ཞིག་ནམ་མཁའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་ནས་མར་ཕེབས་པ་མཐོང་ཞིང་། ཁོང་གི་ཕྱག་ཏུ་ཞབས་མེད་པའི་དོང་གི་ལྡེ་མིག་དང་ལྕགས་ཐག་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་བཟུང་ཡོད་དོ།། 2ཁོང་གིས་འབྲུག་སྟེ་གནའ་བོའི་སྦྲུལ་དང་མིང་གཞན་ལ་བདུད་དང་སཱ་ཏན་ཞེས་ཟེར་བ་དེ་བཟུང་ནས་ལོ་ངོ་ཆིག་སྟོང་ལ་བཀྱིགས་ཤིང་། 3རྒྱལ་ཁབ་རྣམས་སླར་ཡང་མི་བསླུ་བའི་ཕྱིར། ཞབས་མེད་པའི་དོང་ནང་དུ་གཡུགས་ཏེ། ལོ་ཆིག་སྟོང་ལོང་བའི་བར་དུ་དོང་ཁ་བཅད་ཅིང་རྟགས་ཐམ་བརྒྱབས་སོ།། དེའི་རྗེས་སུ། བདུད་དེ་གནས་སྐབས་སུ་གློད་བཀྲོལ་གཏོང་དགོས་པ་ཡིན་ནོ།།
Revelation 20:1-3
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.
Being careful about drawing any man-made theological dogmatic conclusion, the connection and relation between the serpent in Genesis 3 and the Devil in Revelation 12 and 20 is open to debate because scripture provided very limited information. A lot of books and papers have been written and published about angels and demons but all these are man’s ideas. It is best to study very carefully what is written and what is not written in scripture.
The totality of scripture revealed to us, as what is written in the Bible, focus on God’s redemption plan for Man, and that is what we need to pay attention to especially with reference to the incident in Genesis 3.
What can be said about the serpent in Genesis 3 and the Devil in Revelation 12 and 20 is that they both have a common trait which cannot be disputed – DECEPTION. Scripture repeatedly warn us about deception, regardless of the source and who is initiating it, and in particularly the kind of deception that damages our position and relationship with God.
The serpent in Genesis 3 was initiating a particular kind of deception that seeks to distort God’s word and incite disobedience against God. And this same kind of deception was being played out by the Devil on Jesus as recorded in Matthew 4

Matthew 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,” ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
What’s happening in Mathew 4 was that after Jesus went through water baptism with John the Baptist, He was to embark on His public ministry. The first thing Jesus did before His public ministry was to go into fasting and prayer and that was when the devil approaches Jesus with intention to incite disobedience against God through disrespectful spinning of God’s words.
Comparing Genesis 3 and Matthew 4, we see a few common trait and purpose of this kind of deception
1) To question and rethink God’s word and commandments
2) To willfully put to test God’s word
3) To abuse the words and promises of God in disregards of Man’s responsibility
4) All the above points highlighted the exultation of human desire in side-stepping God’s supremacy over His creations.
In Genesis 3, Eve fell into deception through yielding to her human desire. What Eve did was not just eating something she was told not to eat although she could eat it because it was there. The fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was to be considered “God’s Holy Property“, “Banned” and or “Prohibited” for human consumption. The warning God gave to Adam about the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was in fact a law imposing a ban or prohibition.
Throughout scripture we will be reading repeated pattern of ban or prohibition established by God for purpose of holiness, sanctification, and Man’s practice of obedience to God’s word is proof of our practice of holiness, worship and service to God.
In Matthew 4, Jesus overcame deception of the devil through unconditional obedience to God’s supremacy. It is very clear the ultimate goal of deception by the Devil was to incite disobedience against God’s word and therefore the key to overcoming deception is our practice of obedience to God’s word as Jesus did.
Jesus in defeating the Devil’s deception taught us important truths and values that is exclusive to God’s right and sovereignty
A) Man’s obligation to obey God’s word
B) Man’s responsibility not to test and doubt God’s commandments
C) Man’s duty to worship God and serve Him
In Matthew 4 all three scripture reference Jesus used to counter attack he devil’s deception were found in Moses writing recorded in Deuteronomy.
བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་སྐྱར་བཤད་ 8:3 – ཁོང་གིས་ཁྱོད་ཚོ་ལྟོགས་བཅུག་པ་གནང་བ་དང་། དེ་རྗེས་ཟས་སུ་མན་ན་གནང་ཞིང་། ཡང་ཁ་ཟས་དེ་ནི་ཁྱོད་ཚོ་དང་ཁྱོད་ཚོའི་མེས་པོ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་དེ་སྔ་ནམ་ཡང་བཟའ་མ་མྱོང་བ་ཞིག་ཡིན་པ་དང་། མི་གསོན་པོར་གནས་ཕྱིར་བག་ལེབ་གཅིག་པོར་བློ་བཅོལ་ན་མི་འགྲིགས་ཤིང་། འོན་ཀྱང་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཞལ་ནས་ཐོན་པའི་བཀའ་རྒྱ་རེ་རེ་སྒོ་ནས་གསོན་པའི་ཆེད་དུ་སློབ་སྟོན་གནང་ཕྱིར་དེ་ལྟར་མཛད་པ་ཡིན་ནོ།
Deuteronomy 8:3 – And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་སྐྱར་བཤད་ 6:16 – ཁྱོད་ཚོས་མ་སཱ་བྱ་བའི་གནས་སུ་གང་བྱས་པ་བཞིན་གཙོ་བོ་དཀོནམཆོག་ཁྱོད་ཚོའི་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་ཚོད་ལྟ་མ་ཞུས་ཤིག
Deuteronomy 6:16 – “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.
བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་སྐྱར་བཤད་ 6:13 – གཙོ་བོ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཁྱོད་ཚོའི་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་གུས་བཀུར་བྱོས་ཤིག་དང། ཁོང་གཅིག་པོར་བསྙེན་བཀུར་ཞུས་ཞིག ཁོང་གི་མཚན་གཅིག་པོར་དམ་བཅའ་འབུལ་ཞིག
Deuteronomy 6:13 – It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.
The words and commandments of God delivered to Israel through Moses were to prepare them to enter The Promises Land and to live long in The Promise Land but Israel went into exile as they fell into deception and idolatry. God did promise to restore the exile but only for those who will walk the path of repentance and obedience.
Jesus came to preach the kingdom of God and call for repentance and obedience and the first lesson we learn from Jesus’ ministry is how He defeated the Devil’s deception. And this should be a pattern for all believers.
Churches across the world do teach believers to grow in faith in the Lord and that is an important part of our foundation in Christ but being warned about deception and to overcome deception is also another important part of our foundation in Christ.
པེ་ཏྲོ་དང་པོ། 4:1-2
1དེ་བས་ན་སྐྱབས་མགོན་མཱ་ཤི་ཀས་སྐུ་ལུས་ཀྱི་ཆ་ནས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱངས༌པས། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་ཀྱང་བློ་སྟོབས་དེ་ལྟ་བུའི་གོ་མཚོན་སྤྲ་བར་བྱ་འོས་སོ།། ཅིའི་ཕྱིར་ཞེ་ན། ལུས་སྟེང་ནས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱངས་པ་རྣམས་ནི་སྡིག་པ་དང་ཁ་བྲལ་བའི་ཕྱིར༌ཡིན། 2ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་སེམས་དེ་ལྟ་བུ་ལྡན་ན། དེང་ཕྱིན་མིའི་འདོད་ཆགས་ཀྱི་རྗེས་སུ་མི་འབྲངས་པར། དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་དགོངས་བཞིན་འཇིག་རྟེན་འདིའི་ཚེ་སྨད་ཀྱི་དུས་འདའ་དགོས་སོ།།
1 Peter 4:1-2
Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.
Looking back in church history from the time of Acts till today the key continuous challenge every believer has to deal with is about obedience to God’s truth God’s word. And among the most common obstacles to living a life of obedience according to God’s words are
I) Negligence to practice obedience to God’s words
II) Distortion of God’s truth
III) Systematic travesty of human responsibility and accountability to God
IV) All of the above 3 points are rooted in deception.
We have to deal with the same situation Eve was faced with in Genesis 3 and what Jesus went through in Matthew 4. And as disciples and followers of Christ we are to observe His living example of overcoming deception and to be conquerors together with Him
མངོན་པ། 12:11 – སྤུན་ཟླ་རྣམས་ནི་དེ་ལས་རྒྱལ་བ་ཡང་།།
ལུ་གུའི་ཟུངས་ཁྲག་དང་ནི་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱི།།
བདེན་དཔང་ཚིག་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་རྒྱལ་བ་འོ།།
ཁོ་རྣམས་འཆི་བའི་ལམ་དུ་འགྲོ་དགོས་ཀྱང་།།
རང་སྲོག་ལ་ནི་ཡེ་ནས་མ་འཛེམས་སོ།།
Revelation 12:11 – And they (God’s people) have conquered him (the Devil) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
Salvation belongs to God but we need to proof ourselves to be conquerors and victorious in Christ.
