What we can learn from the letters of Peter about practice of faith in Christ in times of uncertainty.

 

པེ་ཏྲོ་དང་པོ། 4:1-2

1 དེའི་ཕྱིར་མཱ་ཤི་ཀས་སྐུ་ལུས་ཀྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱོང་བས། དེ་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས་ཀྱིས་རང་བརྟན་པར་བྱེད། གང་ལགས་ཟེར་ན། ལུས་ཀྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱོང་བ་དེས་སྡིག་ཉེས་དང་བྲལ།

2 དེ་ནི་ད་ཕྱིན་ཆད་ཁྱེད་ཚོ་ཤ་ཁྲག་གི་ལུས་རྒྱུན་མ་ཆད་བར་འཇིག་རྟེན་དུ་སྡོད་རིང་མིའི་འདོད་ཆགས་ལྟར་མ་ཡིན་གྱིས། དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་དགོངས་ལྟར་མི་འཚེ་སྐྱེལ་བའི་ཕྱིར་རོ།

 

1 Peter 4:1-2

Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.

 

It is sobering to know that Jesus the Son of God destined for power and glory as God’s chosen Messiah lived in pain and suffering during His earthly life. He could have walked away from those situations of unjustified sufferings but He wanted to please the Father

 

ལུ་ཀཱ 22:42 – “ཀྱེ་ཡབ་ལགས། ཁྱེད་ཐུགས་མཉེས་པ་ཡིན་ན་ཕོར་པ་འདི་ང་ལས་ཕར་ལེན་མཛོད། འོན་ཀྱང་ངའི་བསམ་པ་བཞིན་དུ་མི་འགྱུར་བར་ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་དགོངས་པ་བཞིན་དུ་གྱུར་ཅིག་”

 

Luke 22:42 – saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

 

Jesus is sinless we are not and He lived by example what it means to please the Father.

We need to be mentality prepared for sufferings as well as the world we are living in is heading the opposite direction of the will of God and for sure there will be clashes and conflict.

Our purpose and intention is to do the will of God and that means we have different priorities

 

ག་ལད་ཡཱ་པ། 6:8-9

8སུ་ཞིག་གིས་ཤ་གཟུགས་ཀྱི་ཕུང་བོ་ལ་བསྟུན་ནས་ས་བོན་བཏབ་ན། ཤ་གཟུགས་ཀྱི་ཕུང་བོ་ལས་འཇིག་པའི་འབྲས་བུ་འབྱུང༌ལ། སུ་ཞིག་གིས་དམ་པའི་ཐུགས་ཉིད་ལ་བསྟུན་ནས་ས་བོན་བཏབ་ན། དམ་པའི་ཐུགས་ཉིད་ལས་མཐའ་མེད་པའི་ཚེ་སྲོག་འཐོབ་ངེས༌སོ༎ 9བདག་ཅག་གིས་དོན་བཟང་པོ་གང་ཞིག་བྱེད་ནའང་ཡིད་ཕམ་མི་རུང༌སྟེ། ཡིད་མ་ཕམ་ན་དུས་གང་ཞིག་སླེབས་པ་དང་འབྲས་བུ་དེའང་ལེན་ཐུབ།

 

Galatians 6:8-9

8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

 

To live for the will of God is about living for the kingdom of God.

18 ངེད་རྣམས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་མདུན་དུ་འཁྲིད་པའི་ཕྱིར། མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་དྲང་བདེན་གྱིས་དྲང་བདེན་མིན་པའི་སྡིག་ཉེས་སེལ་བའི་དོན་དུ་ཐེངས་གཅིག་གྲོངས། སྐུ་ལུས་ཀྱི་ཆ་ནས་གྲོངས་ཀྱང༌། ཐུགས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྒོ་ནས་གསོན།

19 ཁོང་གིས་ཐུགས་ཉིད་བརྒྱུད་ནས་བཙོན་ལ་ཕེབས་ཏེ་དེར་ཡོད་པའི་སེམས་ཉིད་རྣམས་ལ་ཆོས་བསྟན་གནང༌།

20 ཁོ་ཚོ་ནི་སྔར་ནོ་ཨ་ཡིས་གྲུ་གཟིངས་བཟོ་བའི་དུས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཐུགས་རྒྱུད་རིང་པོས་སྒུག་གནང་བའི་སྐབས་སུ་བཀའ་ལ་མ་ཉན་པ་རྣམས་ཡིན། གྲུ་གཟིངས་དེ་ལ་བསྡད་ནས་ཆུ་ལོག་ལས་མི་ཉུང་ངུ་ཞིག་སྟེ་མི་བརྒྱད་ལས་ཐར་མེད།

21 ཆུ་དེ་ནི་ཡེ་ཤུ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་སླར་གསོན་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་ད་ལྟ་ཁྱེད་ཚོ་ཐར་བར་བྱེད་པའི་ཁྲུས་གསོལ་མཚོན། ལུས་ཀྱི་མི་གཙང་བ་དག་པར་བྱེད་པ་མ་ཡིན་གྱིས། གནོངས་མེད་པར་འགྱུར་བའི་ཕྱིར་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་རེ་འབོད་བྱེད་པ་ཞིག་ཡིན།

22 ཡེ་ཤུ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་ནི་ཞིང་ཁམས་སུ་ཕེབས་ནས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཕྱག་གཡས་སུ་བཞུགས་ཏེ། དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཕོ་ཉ་དང༌། དབང་ལྡན། མཐུ་ལྡན་རྣམས་ཁོང་གི་དབང་འོག་ཏུ་ཡོད་དོ།།

 

1 Peter 3:18-22

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

 

Peter’s messages here have generated many discussions about people who perished during Noah’s Flood. Furthermore what Peter said about Jesus preaching to “the spirits in prison” has been used by modern day preachers about places for the dead. It is difficult to conclude that these issues mentioned here we will have no full complete understanding perhaps till we meet Jesus in person.

The point of Peter’s message is about obedience to the living words of God

Therefore Peter said in v21

21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Interestingly Peter need to specifically mention “not as a removal of dirt from the body” and that’s because there are people who think water baptism as “removal of dirt from the body”!

That should not be surprising and shocking as we know there are religious practices across the world even till today that practices their beliefs of water baptism as removal of dirt from the body! Such practices have nothing to do with obedience to God’s word.

Believers and disciples of Jesus who were scattered across the Roman world and further will be subjected to influences of pagan and religious practices of this world. And as foreigners living in foreign land there is the pressure to conformity with the customs of a dominant social group which result in “cultural assimilation,”

 

Paul warns of the same problem

རོ་མཱ་པ། 12:1-2

1སྤུན་ཟླ༌རྣམས། དེ་ལྟར་ཡིན་པས། ངས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་བསྐུལ་བར་བྱ༌སྟེ། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་རང་གི་ལུས་པོ་ནི་གསོན་མཆོད་དུ་ཕུལ༌ཞིག དེ་ནི་དམ་པ་ཡིན་ཞིང་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཐུགས་མཉེས༌པ་དང་། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གི་སེམས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་བསྙེན་བཀུར་ཡིན་ནོ།། 2དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་དགོངས་བཟང་པོ༌དང༌། ཡིད་དུ་འོང༌བ། ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པ་བཅས་རྟོགས་པའི༌ཕྱིར། འཇིག་རྟེན་འདིའི་ལུགས་བཞིན་མི་བྱེད་པར། སེམས་གསར་པར་བསྒྱུར་པ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་གཤིས་སྤྱོད་ཀྱང་སྒྱུར་ཅིག

 

Romans 12:1-2

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

 

Back to Peter’s message where he speaks of the resurrection of Jesus v21-22

“the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.”

The resurrection of Jesus is a pattern for believers and disciples as we are to look forward to our resurrection that we may be in His kingdom forever.
