What we can learn from the letters of Peter about practice of faith in Christ in times of uncertainty.

 

པེ་ཏྲོ་དང་པོ། 3:13-17

13 བཟང་པོ་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར་བརྩོན་སེམས་ཡོད་ན། ཁྱེད་ཚོར་གནོད་པ་བྱེད་མཁན་སུ་ཡོད།

14 བཟང་པོ་བྱས་པའི་རྐྱེན་གྱིས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱོང་ནའང་ཁྱེད་རྣམས་ལ་བྱིན་རླབས་འཐོབ་པར་འགྱུར། ཁོ་ཚོར་མ་འཇིགས་ཤིང༌། སེམས་འཁྲུག་པར་མ་འགྱུར། 15 སེམས་ནང་ན་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་གཙོ་བོ་ཡིན་པ་ལ་བསྙེན་བཀུར་བྱེད། ཁྱེད་ལ་ཡོད་པའི་ཐར་པའི་རེ་བ་དེའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་སྐོར་འདྲི་མཁན་ལ་སེམས་དུལ་བ་དང་གུས་པས་ལན་འདེབས་རྒྱུར་རྒྱུན་དུ་གྲ་སྒྲིག་བྱས་ཏེ་སྡོད།

16 མཱ་ཤི་ཀའི་སྤྱོད་ལམ་བཟང་པོར་སྨད་ར་གཏོང་མཁན་རྣམས་ནི་ངོ་ཚ་རུ་འགྱུར་བའི་ཕྱིར་ཁྱེད་ཚོས་གནོངས་མེད་པ་བྱེད་དགོས།

17 སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱོང་བ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་དགོངས་ཡིན་ན། ངན་པ་ལས་བཟང་པོ་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱོང་བ་ལེགས་སོ།

 

1 Peter 3:13-17

13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.

 

Peter addresses another very difficult subject.

In modern societies where social justice has become a worldwide movement any call to suffer in silence will be mocked upon.

Peter message need not be portrayed as against the world social justice movement because humanist ideologies have nothing to do with the kingdom of God.

Peter’s message is about serving Jesus the Christ and about our future inheritance in the kingdom of God. That means to understand our suffering in the context of the will of God and know our purpose as witness of our faith in Jesus the Christ. And when we do suffer we pray to our Father in heaven.

Peter’s message focus on

 

“for righteousness’ sake”

“honor Christ the Lord as holy”

 

Peter was speaking to believers and disciples who no longer live for themselves but for the will of God and to glorify Jesus the Messiah. We who believe in Jesus and do the will of God the Father have higher calling in the kingdom of God. Therefore Peter speaks of defense as in making clear explanation about our faith in Jesus the Messiah and our future hope and glory in the kingdom of God.

Peter’s message is rooted in Jesus teaching in the Sermon on the Mount

 

མད་ཐཱ། 5:10-11

10 དྲང་བདེན་ཉིད་ཕྱིར་འཚེ་བ་ཕོག་པ་རྣམས།།

དཀོན་མཆོག་རྒྱལ་སྲིད་ཁོ་ཚོའི་ཡིན་པས་བདེའོ།།

11 ངའི་དོན་དུ་མི་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཁྱེད་ཚོར་དམའ་བེབས་གཏོང་ཞིང༌། གནོད་སྐྱེལ་བ་དང༌། རྫུན་ཤོད་དེ་ཚིག་ངན་སྣ་ཚོགས་སྨྲ་བའི་སྐབས་སུ་ཁྱེད་རྣམས་བདེ་བ་ཡིན།

 

Matthew 5:10-11

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

 

The blessing Jesus speaks of is in our future inheritance in the kingdom of God.

The words of God bring about separation and division between those who serve God and those who do not, between those who life for Jesus and those who do not.

We will go through unwanted pain and sufferings for the sake of our faith in Jesus and for our future inheritance in the kingdom of God.
