What we can learn from the letters of Peter about practice of faith in Christ in times of uncertainty.

པེ་ཏྲོ་གཉིས་པ། 2:2-22

2 མི་མང་པོས་ཁོ་ཚོའི་འདོད་ཆགས་ཀྱི་སྤྱོད་ལམ་ལྟར་བྱེད་པས་བདེན་པའི་ལམ་ལ་སྨད་ར་གཏོང་བར་འགྱུར།

3 ཡང་ཁོ་ཚོས་སེར་སྣའི་སྒོ་ནས་རྫུན་གཏམ་གྱིས་ཁྱེད་ཚོར་མགོ་སྐོར་གཏོང་བར་འགྱུར། འོན་ཀྱང་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཁོ་ཚོར་གནའ་སྔ་མོ་ནས་ཁྲིམས་གཅོད་མཛད་པས་ཁོ་ཚོ་འཇིག་པར་འགྱུར་ངེས་ཡིན།

4 གལ་སྲིད་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་སྡིག་ཉེས་ཀྱི་ལས་བྱས་པའི་ཕོ་ཉའང་ཐར་བར་མི་མཛད་པར་དམྱལ་ཁམས་སུ་འཕངས་ནས། དེ་དག་ལྕགས་ཐག་གིས་བཅིངས་ཏེ་མུན་ནག་གི་ནང་ལ་ཁྲིམས་གཅོད་ཀྱི་ཉིན་མོའི་བར་དུ་བཞག་པར་མཛད་པ་དང༌།

5 དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་མི་ཉན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་འཇིག་རྟེན་ལ་ཆུ་ལོག་མཛད་པའི་ཚེ། སྤྱོད་པ་བཟང་པོ་སྒྲོག་མཁན་ནོ་ཨ་དང་ཁོང་གི་ནང་མི་བདུན་བསྐྱབས་ཤིང༌། གནའ་བོའི་འཇིག་རྟེན་དེ་མེད་པར་མཛད།

6 དེའི་རྗེས་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་མི་ཉན་པ་རྣམས་ལ་གང་འབྱུང་བའི་དཔེ་མཛད་པའི་ཕྱིར་སཱ་དོམ་དང་གྷོ་མོ་ར་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་ཁྲིམས་ཐག་བཅད་ནས་ཐལ་བར་གཏོར་བཤིག་མཛད་དུས།

7 ཁོང་གིས་ཁྲིམས་མེད་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་འདོད་ལོག་སྤྱོད་པས་སེམས་ཕངས་པར་གྱུར་མཁན་དྲང་ལྡན་པའི་མི་ལོཌ་ད་ཟེར་མཁན་སྒྲོལ་བར་མཛད་ན།

8 (ཁོ་ཚོའི་ཁྲོད་དུ་ཉིན་ལྟར་གནས་པའི་ཚེ་དྲང་ལྡན་པའི་མི་དེས་ཁོ་ཚོའི་ཁྲིམས་དང་འགལ་བའི་སྤྱོད་ལམ་མཐོང་ཞིང་ཐོས་པས་ཁོའི་དྲང་ལྡན་པའི་སེམས་མནར་བར་གྱུར་)

9-10 དེའི་ཐོག་ནས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཆོས་སེམས་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་ཉམས་ཚོད་ལས་ཐར་ཞིང༌། དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་མི་ཉན་པ་རྣམས་དང༌། ལྷག་པར་དུ་འདོད་ལོག་གི་ངང་ནས་སྤྱོད་པ་བྱེད་ཅིང༌། དབང་ཆ་དང་ལེན་མི་བྱེད་མཁན་རྣམས་ཁྲིམས་གཅོད་གཏོང་བའི་ཉིན་མོའི་བར་དུ་ཆད་པའི་ནང་འཇོག་པར་མཛད་ཚུལ་ཡང་མཁྱེན། ཁོ་ཚོ་ང་རྒྱལ་ཆེ་ཞིང་རང་འདོད་བྱེད་མཁན་ཡིན་པས་གཟི་བརྗིད་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་ལ་སྐུར་བ་འདེབས་པར་མི་འཇིགས།

11 འོན་ཀྱང་མི་དེ་ཚོ་ལས་སྟོབས་དང་དབང་ཆེ་བའི་ཕོ་ཉ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་གཙོ་བོའི་མདུན་དུ་ཁོ་ཚོར་སྐུར་བ་མི་འདེབས།

12 མི་དེ་རྣམས་ནི་བཟུང་ནས་གསོད་པའི་ཕྱིར་སྐྱེས་པའི་བློ་གྲོས་མེད་པའི་གཅན་གཟན་དང་འདྲ་བ་ཡིན་ཏེ། རང་བཞིན་གྱི་འདོད་པ་ལྟར་སྤྱོད་པ་བྱེད། ཁོ་ཚོས་གང་མི་རྟོགས་པ་ལ་སྐུར་བ་འདེབས། ཁོ་ཚོ་ཡང་གཅན་གཟན་དང་འདྲ་བར་འཇིག་པར་འགྱུར་ངེས།

13 ཁོ་ཚོར་གནོད་འཚེ་སྐྱེལ་བའི་འབྲས་བུ་གནོད་འཚེ་འཐོབ་པར་འགྱུར། ཉིན་མོར་ཡང་བག་མེད་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་བྱེད་པ་དགའ་བར་རྩི་ཞིང༌། ཁྱེད་ཚོ་དང་མཉམ་དུ་གསོལ་སྟོན་གཤོམ་དུས་གཡོ་སྒྱུ་ལོངས་སུ་སྤྱོད་པར་བྱེད་པ་དེ་རྣམས་གཙོག་ཅིང་སྐྱོན་ཅན་ཡིན་ནོ།

14 ལོག་གཡེམ་གྱིས་གང་བའི་མིག་གིས་ལྟ་ཞིང་སྡིག་ཉེས་བཀག་ཐབས་མེད། སེམས་བརྟན་པོ་མེད་པ་རྣམས་ལ་བསླུ་བྲིད་བྱེད། མི་དེ་རྣམས་སེར་སྣ་ལ་གོམས་ཤིང༌། དམོད་པ་ཕོག་པའི་རིགས་ཡིན།

15 དྲང་བའི་ལམ་དོར་ནས་འཁྱོག་ལམ་སྟེ། པེ་ཨོར་གྱི་བུ་པཱ་ལཱམ་གྱི་རྗེས་སུ་འབྲངས། ཁོ་ནི་སྡིག་པའི་འབྲས་བུ་ལ་ཆགས།

16 ཁོས་བཀའ་ལས་འགལ་བས་བཀའ་སྐྱོན་ཐོབ། སྨྲ་མི་ཤེས་པའི་བོང་བུ་ཡིས་མིའི་སྐད་ཀྱིས་སྨྲས་ནས་ལུང་སྟོན་པ་པཱ་ལཱམ་གྱི་སྨྱོ་བའི་བྱ་བ་བཀག

17 མི་དེ་ཚོ་ཆུ་སྐམ་པའི་ཆུ་མིག་དང༌། རླུང་གིས་འདེད་པའི་སྨུག་པ་དང་འདྲ་བ་ཡིན། ཁོ་ཚོའི་ཆེད་དུ་སྨག་རུམ་ཉར་ཡོད།

18 ཁོ་ཚོས་དོན་མེད་ང་རྒྱལ་གྱི་གཏམ་བཤད་ཅིང༌། འདོད་ཆགས་ཀྱི་སྒོ་ནས་འཁྲུལ་བ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ནང་ནས་ཐར་མ་ཐག་པ་རྣམས་ལ་བསླུ་བྲིད་བྱེད།

19 ཁོ་ཚོས་མི་རྣམས་ལ་རང་དབང་སྤྲོད་རྒྱུ་ཁ་ཆད་བྱེད་ཀྱང་ཁོ་ཚོ་རང་ཉིད་ངན་རུལ་གྱི་བྲན་གཡོག་ཡིན། རྒྱུ་མཚན་ནི་མི་ཞིག་གང་གི་དབང་འོག་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་པ་དེའི་བྲན་གཡོག་ཡིན།

20 ངེད་རྣམས་ཀྱི་གཙོ་བོ་དང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་རྟོགས་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་འཇིག་རྟེན་གྱི་མི་གཙང་བ་ལས་ཐར་ནས་སླར་ཡང་མི་གཙང་བས་བཅིངས་ཏེ་ཕམ་ན། གནས་ཚུལ་སྔ་མ་ལས་ཕྱི་མ་ངན།

21 དྲང་བདེན་ཉིད་ཀྱི་ལམ་ཤེས་ནས་ཁོ་ཚོར་བཅོལ་བའི་བཀའ་དམ་པ་སྤངས་པ་ལས་ལམ་དེ་ནམ་ཡང་མ་ཤེས་ན་ལེགས།

22 ཁ་དཔེ་ལ་བཤད་པ་བདེན་པ་ཡིན་ཏེ། ཁྱི་རང་གི་སྐྱུག་པར་ལོག་ཅེས་པ་དང༌། ཕག་མོ་བཀྲུས་རྗེས་སླར་ཡང་འདམ་པར་འགྲེ་ཞེས་པ་ཁོ་རྣམས་ལ་བྱུང་ངོ༌།།

2 Peter 2:2-22

2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.

Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, 11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord. 12 But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, 13 suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. 14 They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! 15 Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, 16 but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.

17 These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. 18 For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves[h] of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”

Peter delivered strong words against false prophets and teachers.

Peter must have foreseen the future bad influences of false prophets and teachers leading the flocks astray and he felt such heavy burden in his spirit to repeat and emphasis his warnings to the disciples about these false prophets and teachers.

Few key points can be observed from Peter’s warning about these false prophets and teachers

They do have the tendency to influence and mislead disciples astray from the truth of the Gospel that teaches us about salvation in Christ
They do offer some sort of spiritual leaderships and that made them attractive for those seeking spiritual guidance
Their message offers false hope and empty promises to those desperate for needs and helps.
No emphasis for repentance to God
No call to live God-fearing lifestyle

In the days of Jeremiah the prophet approved of God to call Israel and Judah to repent of their sins, he saw the operations of false prophets who misled the people of God.

Instead of turning away from sins, these false prophets and teachers encouraged the people to continue in their sins and wickedness and eventually Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians army.

In Peter’s long discourse against false prophet and teachers there is the repeated warning of missing out on our true salvation in Christ. From the example of Noah and Lot, those who willfully rejected the call to repent perished without hope of peace and restoration with God.

What Encourages People to Rejected God’s Warning and Judgement?

Misleading teachings by spiritual leaders who refused to speak the truth of God’s words about judgement and repentant. Those who perished in the flood of Noah’s time refused to believe God’s judgement was upon them due to their sins in acts of moral corruptions. People were committing robberies and murder without restrains and had no regards for the judgements of God.

People were sinning against their own consciousness of moral values and not surprisingly led by bad examples.

In our days and time, the influence of Prosperity Gospel can be viewed as a form of false and misleading teachings and causing people to stray from true redemption in Christ.

Prosperity Gospel encourages people to seek material benefits in God and not true repentance. Those who promote prosperity gospel themselves are shrouded in greed and delusion. Those who chase after prosperity gospel do not set priorities on God’s eternal purpose.

The Apostle Paul warned against prioritizing money and material wealth

ཐི་མོ་ཐེ་དང་པོ། 6:9-10

8དེ་བས་ཁ་ལ་ཟས་དང་རྒྱབ་ལ་གོས་ཡོད་ན་ཡིད་ཚིམ་དགོས་སོ།། 9འོན་ཀྱང༌། ཕྱུག་པོར་འགྱུར་འདོད་པ་རྣམས་ནི་ཉམས་ཚོད་དང་རྙི་རྒྱ་རུ་ཚུད༌པ་དང༌། བླུན་ཞིང་རྨོངས་པ་དང་གནོད་པ་ཆེ་བའི་འདོད་རྔམ་སྣ་ཚོགས་ཀྱི་ནང་དུ་ལྷུང་སྟེ་རང་ཉིད་བརླག་ཅིང་འཇིག་པར་འགྱུར་རོ།། 10ཅིའི་ཕྱིར་ཞེ་ན། རྒྱུ་ནོར་ལ་རྔམ་པ་ནི་ལས་ངན་པ་སྣ་ཚོགས་ཀྱི་འབྱུང་རྩ་ཡིན༌ལ། མི་ཁ་ཤས་རྒྱུ་ནོར་ལ་ཞེན་ཆགས་ཏེ་དད་པ་དང་ཁ་བྲལ་ནས་རང་གིས་རང་ཉིད་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མང་པོས་བརྟོལ་བར་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར་རོ།།

1 Timothy 6:9-10

9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Covetousness for material wealth that blinds our vision and understanding for God’s true eternal blessings is destructive to our walk with Jesus. People are being led astray by temptations and lust for financial powers of this world.

Peace and prosperity are meant to be some form of God’s blessing but to prioritize these over justice, righteousness of God, and moral values taught by Jesus is to neglect the more important matters of God’s teachings.

When Jesus was born as a child He did received very high valuable gifts but Mary and Joseph used all their resources to raise godly children. And when Jesus reach the age of ministry He sacrificed all for the blessing of His disciples.

Jesus as good example warned His disciples about deception of worldly wealth

མར་ཀུ 8:34-38

34 ཁོང་གིས་མི་ཚོགས་དང་ཉེ་གནས་རྣམས་རང་གི་དྲུང་དུ་བོས་ནས་

“གལ་ཏེ་མི་སུ་ཞིག་ང་ཡི་རྗེས་སུ་འབྲང་འདོད་ན།

རང་ཉིད་དོར་ནས་རང་གི་རྒྱང་ཤིང་འཁུར་ཏེ་ང་ཡི་རྗེས་སུ་འབྲང་དགོས།

35 མི་སུས་ཀྱང་རང་གི་སྲོག་ཐར་བར་བྱེད་འདོད་པ་དེས་བརླག་པར་འགྱུར།

མི་སུས་ཀྱང་ང་རང་དང་འཕྲིན་བཟང་གི་དོན་དུ་རང་གི་སྲོག་གཏོང་པ་དེས་ཐར་བར་འགྱུར་ངེས་ཡིན།

36 མི་སུ་ལ་འཇིག་རྟེན་ཧྲིལ་པོ་ཐོབ་ཀྱང་རང་སྲོག་བརླགས་ན་ཅི་ཕན།

37 ཡང་ན་མིས་རང་གི་སྲོག་ཅི་དང་བརྗེའམ།

38 ལོག་གཡེམ་ཅན་དང་སྡིག་སྤྱོད་ཀྱི་མི་རབས་འདི་ལས་མི་སུ་ཞིག་གིས་ང་དང་ངའི་བཀའ་ངོ་ཚ་བའི་རྒྱུར་བརྩིས་ན།

མིའི་རིགས་ཀྱི་བུ་ཡང་ཡབ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་གཟི་བརྗིད་ལས་དམ་པའི་ཕོ་ཉ་འཁོར་དང་བཅས་པ་འཇིག་རྟེན་དུ་ཕེབས་དུས།

མི་དེ་ཡང་ངོ་ཚ་བའི་རྒྱུར་བརྩི་བར་བྱ་”

Mark 8:34-38

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

So what shall we do with all these warnings from Jesus and His chosen apostles?

We need to learn how to separate truth and lies about what are true blessings of God.

We need to know what is of real eternal value for us and for our relationship with God.

We need to know the path to our true redemption in Christ.

Repentance, sacrifices, giving, and sharing of resources and faith is our real Christian value and heritage.

Our sufferings of inconveniences and being thankful to God for our daily needs are a blessing.

Jesus, Peter and Paul do not preach and promote prosperity gospel!

False prophets and teachers have common characteristic of deviating from scripture truth that emphasis repentance and humility before God.

False prophets and teachers also have a common trend of highlighting privileges and entitlement as special chosen race abusing the name of God.

For us true disciples of Jesus we must not neglect scripture truth that teaches us to separate and divide between light and darkness, between those who walk in truth and those who do not.

It is interesting that Peter warned

“Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”

It is a warning that from the time of Adam and Eve after they fell into sin, deception and false teachings have been in operations and will continue till the Lord return to put a complete end to lies and deceptions of the Devil.

Peter warned us in his messages these false prophet and teachers themselves commit works of the flesh that are sinful and rebellious against God’s teachings.

Peter’s message teaches us to seek those who are approved of God by observing a lifestyle of godliness, righteousness, and truth according to Jesus’ example. And to reject those false prophets and teachers who do not reflect the ways of Jesus.
