What we can learn from the letters of Peter about practice of faith in Christ in times of uncertainty.

པེ་ཏྲོ་གཉིས་པ། 3:8-9

8 འོན་ཀྱང་གཅེས་པའི་སྤུན་ཟླ་རྣམས། གཙོ་བོའི་ཆ་ནས་ཉིན་མོ་གཅིག་ནི་ལོ་སྟོང་དང་འདྲ་བ་ཡིན་ཞིང༌། ལོ་སྟོང་ནི་ཉིན་མོ་གཅིག་དང་འདྲ་བ་ཡིན་པ་མ་བརྗེད་པ་གྱིས་ཤིག

9 མི་ཁ་ཤས་ཀྱིས་གཙོ་བོས་ཞལ་ཆད་སྒྲུབ་པར་དུས་ཚོད་རིང་པོ་འགོར་བར་སེམས་ཀྱང་དོན་དངོས་ཐོག་དེ་ལྟར་མ་ཡིན། མི་སུ་ཞིག་ཀྱང་འཇིག་པར་མི་འགྱུར་བར་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱིས་སྤྱོད་པ་ངན་པ་རྣམས་སྤངས་ནས་སེམས་བསྒྱུར་བར་ཁོང་གིས་ཐུགས་ངང་རྒྱུད་རིང་པོས་སྒུག་བཞིན་ཡོད།

2 Peter 3:8-9

8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

The point of Peter’s message here is about the patience of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that all Man should seek repentance and not perished without hope of eternal life in God.

Peter’s statement “one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” have been the subject of scholarly debate for a long time with regards to creation account in Genesis and prophesies about the coming Messiah.

Scripture do have records of dating and timing that are very difficult for us to understand, especially with reference to the Messiah and the establishment of the Messianic Era.

During the days of Peter a hot topic of contention among disciples and followers of Christ was the continued subjugation of Israel under Rome. The argument was that if Jesus is the Messiah why did He not liberate Israel? What about the promises and establishment of the Messianic Era?

Remember Jesus after His resurrection appeared to His disciples to teach them further about the kingdom of God and they asked Him this –

མཛད་འཕྲིན། 1:6-11

6དེ་ནས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་དང་སྐུ་ཚབ་པ་རྣམས་ལྷན་དུ་འཛོམས་པའི་དུས་ལ་སྐུ་ཚབ་པ་རྣམས་ན༌རེ། གཙོ་བོ༌ལགས། ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་ཡེས་ར་ཨེལ་གྱི་རྒྱལ་སྲིད་བསྐྱར་དར་མཛད་པའི་དུས་ནི་ད་ལྟ་ཡིན་ནམ་ཞེས་ཞུས་པ༌ལ། 7ཁོང་གིས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ཡབ་ཀྱིས་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱི་དབང་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་གཏན་དུ་ཁེལ་བའི་དུས་དང་ཟླ་ཚེས་ནི་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཤེས་མི་རུང༌ངོ་།། 8འོན་ཀྱང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱི་སྟེང་ལ་དམ་པའི་ཐུགས་ཉིད་ཁྱབ་པ་ན་དབང་ཐོབ༌སྟེ། ཡེ་རུ་སཱ་ལེམ༌དང༌། ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་དང༌སཱ་མར་ཡ་ཡུལ་ཐམས་ཅད༌དང༌། ས་མཐའི་བར་དུའང་བདག་ལ་དཔང་པོ་བྱེད་པར་འགྱུར་ཞེས་གསུངས་སོ།། 9དེ་ནས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་དེ་སྐད་གསུངས་པ་དང་སྐུ་ཚབ་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཁོང་ཉིད་ལ་ལྟ་བའི་དུས༌སུ། ཁོང་ཉིད་ནམ་མཁའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་སུ་དྲངས་པ༌དང༌། སྤྲིན་ཕུང་ཞིག་གིས་ཁོང་ཉིད་བསྒྲིབས་ཏེ་མི་མཐོང་བར་གྱུར་ཏོ།། 10སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་ནམ་མཁའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་སུ་འཕག་བཞིན་པ༌དང༌། སྐུ་ཚབ་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་མིག་ཅེ་རེར་ནམ་མཁར་ལྟ༌སྐབས། གློ་བུར་ཉིད་དུ་གོས་དཀར་པོ་གྱོན་པའི་མི་གཉིས་ཁོ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་གམ་དུ་བྱུང་སྟེ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། 11ཀྱེ། ག་ལིལ་པ༌རྣམས། ཅིའི་ཕྱིར་ཡར་ལངས་ནས་ནམ་མཁར་ལྟ་བ་ཡིན༌ནམ། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གི་མདུན་ནས་ནམ་མཁའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་སུ་དྲངས་པའི་ཡེ་ཤུ་ཁོང་ཉིད༌ནི། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཁོང་ཉིད་ཇི་ལྟར་ནམ་མཁའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་སུ་དྲངས་པ་མཐོང་བ་བཞིན་སླར་ཡང་དེ་ལྟར་འབྱོན་པར་འགྱུར་ཞེས་གསུངས༌སོ།།

Acts 1:6-11

6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

The disciples at that time were very concern about restoration of Israel and what scripture revealed about the Messiah being enthroned as King of kings – Psalm 2.

The disciples were surprised Jesus was lifted up before them into heaven, and therefore they were left there staring into heaven!

Jesus before His ascension gave them this assignment “be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth“ with the empowering of the Holy Spirit.

Christians today waiting for Jesus’ return would have the same kind of questions and struggles in our hearts and minds about the kingdom of God and in particular about this term “The Day of the Lord“

The Day of the Lord is an eschatological term referring to a few things together

Final judgement
End of the world
Coming of the Messiah
Tribulation
What a lot of Christians believe and expect about the rapture

Now let’s look at what Paul said about the Day of the Lord

ཐེ་སཱ་ལོ་ནེ་ཀེ་པ་དང་པོ། 4:13-18

13སྤུན་ཟླ༌རྣམས། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་རེ་ཐག་ཆད་པའི་མི་རྣམས་དང་འདྲ་བར་སེམས་སྡུག་མི་བྱེད་པའི་ཆེད༌དུ། ངེད་ཅག་གིས་འདས་པོ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་སྐོར་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་ཤེས་སུ་འཇུག་པར་འདོད་དོ།། 14རྒྱུ་མཚན་ནི་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་སྐུ་གྲོངས་ནས་སླར་གསོན་པར་བདག་ཅག་གིས་ཡིད་ཆེས་བྱེད་པ༌ཡིན་ན། སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུའི་དད་ལྡན་འདས་པོ་རྣམས་ཀྱང་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་དང་ལྷན་དུ་འཁྲིད་ཡོང་བར༌ངེས། 15ད་ལྟ་ངེད་ཅག་གིས་གཙོ་བོའི་བཀའ་ལྟར་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་དོན་འདི་སྨྲ་བར༌བྱ་སྟེ། གཙོ་བོ་ཕེབས་ཡོང་བའི་བར༌དུ། བདག་ཅག་གསོན་པོར་གནས་པ་རྣམས༌ནི་སྔར་ནས་ཚེ་ལས་འདས་པའི་དད་ལྡན་རྣམས་ཀྱི་སྔོན་དུ་འགྲོ་མི་ནུས༌ཏེ། 16གཙོ་བོ་ནི་འུར་སྒྲ་དང་ཕོ་ཉའི་མཆོག་གི་སྐད༌སྒྲ། དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་དུང་སྒྲ་དང་བཅས་ནམ་མཁའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་ནས་ཕྱིར་འབྱོན་པའི་དུས༌སུ། སྐྱབས་མགོན་མཱ་ཤི་ཀའི་དད་ལྡན་འདས་པོ་རྣམས་སྔོན་དུ་སླར་གསོན་པར་འགྱུར་བའི་ཕྱིར༌རོ།། 17དེ་ནས་བདག་ཅག་གསོན་པོར་གནས་པ་རྣམས་གློ་བུར་དེ་རྣམས་དང་མཉམ་དུ་སྤྲིན་ཕུང་ནང་དུ་དྲངས༌ཏེ། བར་སྣང་ནས་གཙོ་བོ་ལ་མཇལ་ཞིང་གཏན་དུ་ཁོང་དང་ལྷན་ཅིག་གནས་པར་འགྱུར་བས། 18ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་གཏམ་འདི་དག་གིས་ཕན་ཚུན་ལ་སེམས་གསོ་བྱེད་པར༌གྱིས།

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

It’s been about 2000 years since Jesus’ resurrection and lifted up to heaven and we are still waiting for His return. There have been lots of debate and questions exactly WHEN is Jesus coming back?

Surely and truly there are sincere believers struggling and eagerly waiting and looking forward to the return of our Lord and Savior and Peter warned of mockers who intend to misled believers about the promises of God for the Messiah and our ultimate redemption.

Peter’s statement “one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day“ is a language of the day to means the patience of our God and we are to wait, continue waiting with patience and perseverance till Jesus return.

Jesus also warned us to endure and persevere to the end –

མད་ཐཱ། 24:11-14

11 ལུང་སྟོན་པ་རྫུན་མ་མང་པོ་ཞིག་འབྱུང་ཞིང་མི་མང་པོར་བསླུ་བྲིད་བྱེད་པར་འགྱུར།

12 བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་དང་འགལ་བ་འཕེལ་བས་མི་མང་ཆེ་བའི་བརྩེ་སེམས་ཉམས་པར་འགྱུར།

13 འོན་ཀྱང་ཚེའི་མཐའ་མཇུག་བར་དུ་བཟོད་པ་སྒོམ་པའི་མི་དེ་ལ་ཐར་པ་འཐོབ་ངེས་ཡིན།

14 ཡང་མི་རིགས་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ་དཔང་པོ་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་རྒྱལ་སྲིད་ཀྱི་འཕྲིན་བཟང་འདི་འཇིག་རྟེན་ཧྲིལ་པོར་སྒྲོག་པར་འགྱུར་ཞིང༌། དེ་ནས་དུས་ཀྱི་མཐའ་མ་འབྱུང༌།

Matthew 24:11-14

11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Since Jesus ascended to heaven till today there has been countless fake saviors and misleading prophetic interpretations and it is shocking how many existing cults and religious groups are there abusing the name of Jesus and leading people astray.

Peter’s message is to warn us of the reality and danger of being led astray.
