To Believe in Jesus – Part 63

 

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 6:16-21

16མཚན་མོའི་དུས་སུ། ཐུགས་སྲས་རྣམས་མར་ག་ལིལ་མཚོ་ཡི་འགྲམ་དུ་སོང༌ཞིང༌། 17གྲུར་བསྡད་ནས་ཀཱ་ཕར་ན་ཧུམ་དུ་འགྲོ་བཞིན་པའི་དུས་སུ་མུན་རུབ་པ༌དང༌། སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་ད་དུང་ཁོ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་གམ་དུ་ཕེབས་མེད༌པ་ཡིན། 18གློ་བུར༌ཉིད་ལ་རླུང་ཆེན་གཡུགས་ནས་རྦ་རླབས་དྲག་ཏུ་འཕྱུར་ཏོ།། 19ཡང་ཐུགས་སྲས་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་མཚོ་གྲུ་བཏང་ནས་རྒྱང་གྲགས་ལྔའམ་དྲུག་ཙམ་དུ་ཕྱིན་པ༌ན། སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་མཚོ་སྟེང་དུ་ཞབས་ཀྱིས་བཅགས་ཤིང་མཚོ་གྲུ་དང་ཉེ་བར་ཕེབས་པ་ཁོ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་མཐོང་ནས་ཤིན་ཏུ་འཇིགས་སོ།། 20དེ་ནས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། འཇིགས་མི་དགོས༌ཏེ། ང་རང་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས་པ༌ན། 21ཐུགས་སྲས་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་དགའ་མགུའི་ངང་ནས་ཁོང་ཉིད་མཚོ་གྲུའི་ནང་དུ་བསུས་པ༌དང༌། མཚོ་གྲུའང་དེ་མ་ཐག་ཏུ་ཁོང་རྣམས་འགྲོ་སའི་ཡུལ་དུ་སླེབས་སོ།།

John 6:16-21

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

 

Continuing from last week posting, this happen after Jesus left the multitude who wanted to install Him as king by force and not something Jesus would had agree to at that time and circumstances.

Most likely Jesus went aside by Himself to pray as He used to. Apparently all these were happening within the 24hrs time frame after Jesus left the multitude.

This incident of Jesus walking on water had generated many different views about the why and how and for what purpose, and have been a popular subject for faith teaching.

However we must bear in mind that everything that were recorded in the Four Gospel about what Jesus did had specific purpose to highlight Jesus’ fulfillment of scripture references about the coming Messiah and His relationship to God the Father, and how we need to response.

Furthermore, the Gospel writer John had mentioned this was happening during Passover when many Jews had gathered in Jerusalem for the feast which they will remember how God delivered their forefathers from Egypt through Moses.

So what was happening here in John 6 would have invoked more memories and reflections among His disciples about what they had learned from scriptures.

Let’s look at Psalm 77 which I believe had clear connection to what was happening in John 6.

We are going to look at the whole chapter 77 of Psalm as I see an important connection to how Jesus reacted to the multitude who wanted to install Him as king by force and what I believe Jesus was praying about for the Jews as all these events was happening around Passover.

1༼ཡེ་དུ་ཐུན་གྱི་ལུགས་སུ་དབུ་མཛད་ལ་སྤྲད་པའི་ཨ་སབ་ཀྱི་མགུར༌མ།༽ དཀོན་མཆོག་དྲུང་དུ་སྐད་གསང་མཐོན་པོས༌འབོད། །དཀོན་མཆོག་བོས་པས་ཁོང་གིས་གསན་པར༌འགྱུར།། 2དཀའ་སྡུག་ཉིན་མོར་ང་ཡིས་ཡ་ཝཱེ༌བཙལ། །མཚན་གྱི་དུས་སུ་ལག་པ་ཡར་བཏེགས༌ནས། །རྒྱུན་ཆད་མེད་པར་ཁོང་ལ་གསོལ་བ༌བཏབ། །བདག་གི་སེམས་ཀྱིས་སེམས་གསོ་མ་འདོད༌དོ།། 3ང་ཡིས་དཀོན་མཆོག་དྲན་ཞིང་འཁུན་སྒྲ༌ཕྱུང༌། །འོ་དོད་འབོད་དུས་བདག་སེམས་རྒུད་པར༌གྱུར།།༼ སེ༌ལཱ། ༽ 4ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་བདག་གི་མིག་ལྕིབས་ཕྱེ་བར་མཛད། །བདག་སེམས་འཁྲུགས་ནས་གཏམ་ཡང་སྨྲ་མ༌ནུས།། 5སྔར་གྱི་ཉིན་མོ་རྣམས་དང་གནའ་སྔ༌མོའི། །ལོ་ཟླ་རྣམས་ལ་ང་ཡིས་བསམ་བློ༌བཏང༌།། 6རང་གི་མཚན་མོའི་མགུར་མ་དྲན་པ༌དང༌། །སྙིང་དུ་བསྒོམས་ཤིང་སེམས་ཀྱིས་ཞིབ་དཔྱོད༌བྱས།། 7གཙོ་བོས་ང་རང་རྟག་ཏུ་སྤངས་ནས༌ནི། །ཕྱིན་ཆད་ནམ་ཡང་ཐུགས་རྗེ་མི་མཛད༌དམ།། 8ཁོང་གི་བྱམས་བརྩེ་གཏན་དུ་ཡལ་བ༌དང༌། །ཁོང་གི་ཞལ་བཞེས་དུས་རྒྱུན་མི་འགྲུབ༌བམ།། 9དཀོན་མཆོག་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་སྙིང་རྗེ་བརྗེད་གྱུར༌རམ། །ཐུགས་ཁྲོས་ཁོང་གི་བྱམས་བརྩེའི་བར་བཅད༌དམ།།༼ སེ༌ལཱ། ༽ 10བླ་ན་མེད་པ་ཁོང་གི་ཕྱག༌གཡས་པས། །ང་ལ་སྔར་བཞིན་འཕྲིན་ལས་མི་མཛད༌པ། །འདི་ནི་བདག་གི་སྐྱོ་གདུང་ཡིན་པར༌བསམས།། 11བདག་གིས་ཡ་ཝཱེའི་མཛད་པ་རྣམས་བརྗོད༌ཅིང༌། །ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་གནའ་བོའི་ངོ་མཚར་དོན་རྣམས༌དྲན།། 12ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་འཕྲིན་ལས་ཀུན་ནི་བསྒོམ་བྱ༌ཞིང༌། །ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་མཛད་པ་རྣམས་ལ་བསམ་བློ༌གཏོང༌།། 13དཀོན་མཆོག་ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ཐབས་ལམ་རྣམ་དག༌ཡིན། །དཀོན་མཆོག་ལྟ་བུ་ཆེན་པོའི་ལྷ་སུ༌ཡོད།། 14ངོ་མཚར་མཛད་མཁན་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཁྱེད་ལགས༌ཏེ། །མི་སྡེའི་ནང་དུ་ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་སྟོབས་ཀྱང༌བསྟན།། 15ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་ཕྱག་དཔུང་བརྐྱངས་ནས་མི་རྣམས༌ཏེ། །ཡ་ཀོབ་དང་ནི་ཡོ་སེབ་བུ་རྣམས༌བསྐྱབས།།༼ སེ༌ལཱ། ༽ 16ཀྱེ་ཀྱེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཆུ་རྣམས་ཁྱེད་མཇལ༌ཞིང༌། །མཇལ་བ་ཙམ་གྱིས་ཤིན་ཏུ་འཚབ་པ༌དང༌། །མཚོ་འོག་རྣམས་ཀྱང་ཐམས་ཅད་འདར་བ༌འོ།། 17སྤྲིན་ཕུང་གིས་ནི་ཆར་ཆུ་བྱོ་བ་དང༌། །ནམ་མཁའི་དབྱིངས་ཀྱིས་སྐད་སྒྲ་འུར་འུར༌བསྒྲགས། །ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ཕྱག་མདའ་རྣམས་ཀྱང་ཕྱོགས་བཞིར༌འཁྱུགས།། 18རླུང་འཁོར་འཚུབ་མའི་ནང་དུ་ཐོག་སྐད༌གྲགས། །གློག་དམར་འཁྱུགས་ནས་འཇིག་རྟེན་འོད་ལ༌ཁྱེར། །ས་གཞི་འདར་ཞིང་འགུལ་ནས་ཡོམ་ཡོམ༌བྱས།། 19ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ཕེབས་ལམ་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་ནང་དུ༌མཆིས། །ཆུ་ཆེན་རྣམས་སུ་གཤེགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡང༌ཡོད། །ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ཞབས་རྗེས་མཐོང་མཁན་སུ་ཡང༌མེད།། 20མོ་ཤེ་དང་ནི་ཨ་རོན་ལག་པ༌མཉམ། །ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་འབངས་མི་ལུག་གི་ཁྱུ་ལྟར༌ཁྲིད།།

Psalm 77

I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and he will hear me.

2 In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted.

3 When I remember God, I moan; when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah

4 You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

5 I consider the days of old, the years long ago.

6 I said, “Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart.” Then my spirit made a diligent search:

7 “Will the Lord spurn forever and never again be favorable?

8 Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time?

9 Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah

10 Then I said, “I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.”

11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.

12 I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.

13 Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God?

14 You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.

15 You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

16 When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled.

17 The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; your arrows flashed on every side.

18 The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightning lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook.

19 Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen.

20 You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

 

Paying attention to v19 and v20 and in John 6 Jesus was seen walking on water by His disciples!

19ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ཕེབས་ལམ་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་ནང་དུ༌མཆིས། །ཆུ་ཆེན་རྣམས་སུ་གཤེགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡང༌ཡོད། །ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ཞབས་རྗེས་མཐོང་མཁན་སུ་ཡང༌མེད།། 20མོ་ཤེ་དང་ནི་ཨ་རོན་ལག་པ༌མཉམ། །ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་འབངས་མི་ལུག་གི་ཁྱུ་ལྟར༌ཁྲིད།།

V20 – that speaks clearly of the Exodus, how God delivered the children of Israel from Egypt.

Today we have the benefit of hindsight and we can look back to history and know what Jesus had accomplished to deliver us from sin and death.

But for those Jews and the disciples of Jesus at the time of John 6, they had yet to encounter the death of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection from the dead.

So that incident of Jesus walking on water was witnessed by His disciple and for a purpose that they may know and understand this is the deliverer God promised long time ago.

In previous post I mentioned how those Jews at that time of Jesus and John the Baptist had wised for political liberation from Rome and during the feats of Passover they would had remember how God delivered their forefathers from Egypt.

The context of Psalm 77 would have been an appropriate prayer guide for the Jews at that time – to look to God for their ultimate deliverance from sin and death.

Today for us Christians who look forward to our future state of eternal life in Christ and our ultimate redemption from sin and death, the same Psalm 77 would be a very useful prayer guide for our daily walk with Jesus.
