To Believe in Jesus – Part 87

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 8:21-24

21ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་མི་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། བདག་ནི་འགྲོ་ཞིང་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་ང་རང་བཙལ་ནའང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་རང་གི་སྡིག་པའི་ནང་དུ་འཆི་བར་འགྱུར་རོ།། ང་རང་འགྲོ་བའི་གནས་སུ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་འགྲོ་མི་ནུས་ཞེས་གསུངས་པ༌དང༌། 22ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་རྣམས་ཕན་ཚུན་ན༌རེ། ཁོང་གིས་ང་རང་འགྲོ་བའི་གནས་སུ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་འགྲོ་མི་ནུས་ཞེས་གསུངས་དོན༌ནི། ཁོང་གིས་རང་སྲོག་གཅོད་འདོད་པ་ཡིན་ནམ་ཞེས་སྨྲས་སོ།། 23ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་འོག་ནས་བྱུང་ཞིང་བདག་ནི་སྟེང་ནས་བྱུང་བ་ཡིན། ཁྱོད་ཅག་ནི་འཇིག་རྟེན་འདིར་གཏོགས་ཤིང་ང་རང་ནི་མི་གཏོགས་སོ།། 24དེའི༌ཕྱིར། བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་རང་གི་སྡིག་པའི་ནང་དུ་འཆི་བར་འགྱུར་ཞེས་སྨྲས་པ་ཡིན། གལ་ཏེ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ང་རང་ནི་གཏན་དུ་གནས་པ་དེ་ཉིད་ཡིན་པར་དད་པ་མི་བྱེད༌ན། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་རང་གི་སྡིག་པའི་ནང་དུ་འཆི་བར་འགྱུར་ཞེས་གསུངས་པ༌ལ།

John 8:21-24

21 So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”

What Jesus said here to the Jews and Pharisees appear complex and obscured.

We need to bear in mind all these was happening before the death and resurrection of Christ and many who heard Jesus speak may not fully comprehend what He was saying although some believed.

Today, having the benefit of hindsight, we could get better perspective from the full context of the Gospel of John to help us better understand what this message in John 8 is about.

First, what Jesus said here in John 8 have a clear indication of separation.

In the first chapter of the Gospel of John the author presented a similar message about separation and to compare and cross reference with what’s happening in John 8, I believe the author is providing some kind of explanation or warning about all those disagreements and confrontations Jesus would have with those who do not receive Him.

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 1:9-13

9གཟི་འོད་དེ་ཉིད་འོད་ཟེར་དངོས་མ༌སྟེ།།

འཇིག་རྟེན་ཡོངས་སུ་འཕྲོས་ནས་མི་ཀུན༌གསལ།།

10དེ་ཡང་ཁོང་ཉིད་འཇིག་རྟེན་འདིར་བཞུགས༌ཤིང༌།།

ཁོང་ཉིད་བརྒྱུད་ནས་འཇིག་རྟེན་བསྐྲུན་ན༌ཡང༌།།

འཇིག་རྟེན་མི་ཡིས་ཁོང་ཉིད་ཤེས་མ༌གྱུར།།

11ཁོང་ནི་རང་ཡུལ་ཕྱོགས་སུ་ཕེབས་ན༌ཡང༌།།

རང་ཡུལ་མི་ཡིས་ཁོང་ལ་བསུ་བ༌མེད།།

12ཁོང་ཉིད་བསུ་ཞིང་ཁོང་གི་མཚན་ལ་ནི།།

དད་པའི་མི་རྣམས་དཀོན་མཆོག་བུ་ཕྲུག་ལ༎

འགྱུར་བར་མཛད་པའི་དབང་ཡང་ཁོང་གིས༌གནང༌།།

13དད་ལྡན་སྐྱེ་བོ་སོ་སོ་དེ་རྣམས༌ནི།།

མི་ཡི་ཁྲག་ལས་སྐྱེས་པ་མ་ཡིན༌ལ།།

མི་ཡི་འདོད་ཆགས་དབང་གིས་མ་སྐྱེས༌ཤིང༌།།

མི་ཡི་འདོད་མོས་བཞིན་དུ་སྐྱེས་པའང༌མིན།།

དེ་ནི་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཉིད་ལས་སྐྱེས་པ་ལགས།།

John 1:9-13

9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

The message of John 1 speaks of separation, and to be specific it points to separation due to rejection from within.

Jesus was born into Jewish family but the religious establishment of the Jewish community of His time rejected Him! A lot of the Jewish folks who live in Jerusalem and were under the influences of the Pharisees were caught in a bind.

What Jesus have been preaching and teaching to them gave them the impression their own religious establishment, especially the Pharisees, Sadducees, and the Sanhedrin, had been misleading them. Thus all the Four Gospels recorded many encounters of questions, debates, disagreements, and confrontations between Jesus and their religious leaderships.

The Jews at the time of Jesus and John the Baptist were expecting the appearing of the Messiah and they were right about the timing of events but many were constrained by their own religious establishments especially the Pharisees and Sadducees who rejected both Jesus and John the Baptist.

However the message of John 1 provided an opposite positive conclusion for those who received Jesus as the Messiah chosen of God – to become rightful children of God.

What a bold and shocking statement from the author of the Gospel of John!

Let’s look at another message in John 17 about separation and from here we can get better understanding what causes such separation

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 17:14-19

14ངས་ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་བཀའ་ཁོ་རྣམས་ལ་བསྩལ་ཅིང་འཇིག་རྟེན་གྱི་མི་དག་ཁོ་རྣམས་ལ༌སྡང༌། རྒྱུ་མཚན་ནི་ང་རང་འཇིག་རྟེན་ལ་མི་གཏོགས་པ༌བཞིན། ཁོ་རྣམས་ཀྱང་འཇིག་རྟེན་ལ་མི་གཏོགས་པའི་ཕྱིར༌རོ།། 15ཁོ་རྣམས་འཇིག་རྟེན་ནས་འདྲེན་པའི་ཕྱིར་ངས་ཁྱེད་ལ་གསོལ་བ་མི་འདེབས༌པར། ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་ཁོ་རྣམས་བདུད་ངན་དེ་ལས་བསྲུང་ཞིང་སྐྱོབ་པའི་ཕྱིར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས༌པ་ཡིན། 16ང་རང་འཇིག་རྟེན་ལ་མི་གཏོགས་པ་བཞིན་ཁོ་རྣམས་ཀྱང་འཇིག་རྟེན་ལ་མི་གཏོགས་སོ།། 17ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་བརྒྱུད་ནས་ཁོ་རྣམས་དམ་པར་མཛོད༌ཅིག ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་བཀའ་ནི་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་ལགས་སོ།། 18ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་ང་རང་འཇིག་རྟེན་དུ་ཇི་ལྟར་མངགས་པ༌བཞིན། ངས་ཀྱང་ཁོ་རྣམས་འཇིག་རྟེན་ལ་མངགས༌ཤིང་། 19ཁོ་རྣམས་ཀྱང་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྒོ་ནས་དམ་པར་འགྱུར་བའི༌ཕྱིར། ངས་ཁོ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ཆེད་དུ་རང་ཉིད་དམ་པར་བྱ་ཞེས་གསུངས༌སོ།།

John 17:14-19

14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

We need to pay attention here and consider what does Jesus mean when He said “I have given them your word“?

These disciples of Jesus who had followed Him around for that few short years had heard His preaching and teaching, and observed how He lived in reflection of the Father’s will.

I believe when Jesus said “I have given them your word” it points to the

The pure teaching and instructions of God not corrupted nor adulterated by man-made doctrine of their religious establishments.
The pure teaching and instructions of God that reveals the will of God for us.
The pure teaching and instructions of God that reveals to us the truth of God’s character, God’s attribute.
The pure teaching and instructions of God that reveals to us how God define sin and judgement.
The pure teaching and instructions of God that show us the true way of repentance so that we may seek redemption, restoration, and find eternal life
The pure teaching and instructions of God that separate light and darkness.

The words of God separate and divide

Based on the teaching of God we learn trust and obedience to do God’s will.

Based on the teaching of God we know the difference between sins and righteousness.

Based on the teaching of God we find the true way to redemption and eternal life through the Messiah chosen of God, Jesus the Christ.

Back to the situation in John 8, Jesus said to those Jews who did not receive Him

21ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་མི་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། བདག་ནི་འགྲོ་ཞིང་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་ང་རང་བཙལ་ནའང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་རང་གི་སྡིག་པའི་ནང་དུ་འཆི་བར་འགྱུར་རོ།། ང་རང་འགྲོ་བའི་གནས་སུ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་འགྲོ་མི་ནུས་ཞེས་གསུངས་པ༌དང༌།

21 So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”

I believe Jesus was still speaking with reference to His relationship with the Father.

Those who do not believe and receive what Jesus has been teaching will not walk in the same path and therefore will be separated. And in this context Jesus added a warning that they will die in their sin. That would had caused a lot of distress and discomfort for those who heard what Jesus said but do not receive Him.
