To Believe in Jesus – Part 89

 

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 8:31-38

31དེ་ནས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་རང་ཉིད་ལ་དད་པ་ཡོད་པའི་ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། གལ་ཏེ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་བདག་གི་བཀའ་ཡི་ནང་དུ་གནས་ན། ཁྱོད་ཅག་ནི་དངོས་གནས་བདག་གི་རྗེས་འབྲང་པ་ཡིན༌ལ། 32ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་དེ་ཤེས་པར་འགྱུར་ཞིང་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པར་མཛད་ངེས་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས་སོ།། 33ཡང་དེ་རྣམས་ན༌རེ། ངེད་རྣམས་ནི་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་གྱི་རིགས་རྒྱུད་ཡིན་ཞིང་ནམ་ཡང་མི་གཞན་གྱི་བྲན་གཡོག་བྱས་མ་མྱོང་བས། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པར་མཛད་ངེས་ཡིན་ཞེས་བརྗོད་དོན་ཅི་ཞེས་དྲིས་པ༌ན། 34ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་ཡང་དག་པར་བདེན་པར་སྨྲ༌སྟེ། སྡིག་པ་བྱེད་མཁན་ཐམས་ཅད་ནི་སྡིག་པའི་བྲན་གཡོག་ཡིན། 35བྲན་གཡོག་ནི་རྟག་ཏུ་བདག་པོའི་ཁྱིམ་ལ་མི་གནས་ཤིང་བུ་ནི་རྟག་ཏུ་རང་གི་ཁྱིམ་ལ་གནས་སོ།། 36དེའི༌ཕྱིར། སྲས་ཀྱིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པར་མཛད་ན་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་དངོས་གནས་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པ་ཡིན། 37བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་གྱི་རིགས་རྒྱུད་ཡིན་པ་ཤེས༌ཀྱང༌། བདག་གི་བཀའ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱི་སེམས་སུ་གནས་ས་མེད་པས་ང་རང་དགྲོང་འདོད༌པ་ཡིན། 38ངས་རང་གི་ཡབ་ཀྱི་དྲུང་ནས་གང་ཞིག་མཐོང་བ་དེ་སྨྲ་བ་ཡིན༌ལ། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་རང་གི་ཕ་ཡི་ངག་ནས་ཐོས་པ་བཞིན་བྱེད་ཅེས་གསུངས༌སོ།།

John 8:31-38

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

 

This conversation recorded here, Jesus was addressing those who believed in Him and most likely referring to those who were following Him with intention to be His disciples.

The key word to note – abide

 

31དེ་ནས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་རང་ཉིད་ལ་དད་པ་ཡོད་པའི་ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། གལ་ཏེ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་བདག་གི་བཀའ་ཡི་ནང་དུ་གནས་ན། ཁྱོད་ཅག་ནི་དངོས་གནས་བདག་གི་རྗེས་འབྲང་པ་ཡིན༌ལ། 32ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་དེ་ཤེས་པར་འགྱུར་ཞིང་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པར་མཛད་ངེས་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས་སོ།།

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

 

The same writer John recorded Jesus’ words in John 15 with similar reference to “abide”

 

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 15:1-4

1དེ་ནས་ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ང་རང་ནི་རྒུན་འབྲུམ་ཤིང་དངོས་ཡིན་ཏེ། བདག་གི་ཡབ་ནི་རྒུན་འབྲུམ་ཤིང་གི་བདག་པོ་ཡིན། 2ཁོང་གིས་བདག་ལ་འབྲེལ་བའི་ཡལ་ག་ལས་འབྲས་བུ་མི་ཐོགས་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་གཅོད་པར་བྱེད༌ཅིང༌། འབྲས་བུ་ཐོགས་པའི་ཡལ་ག་ལ་འབྲས་བུ་དེ་ལས་ཀྱང་ལྷག་པ་ཞིག་སྨིན་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཡལ་ག་འབྲེག་བཅོས་མཛད་དོ།། 3ད་ལྟ་བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་བཀའ་གསུངས༌པས། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱང་གཙང་མར་གྱུར༌པ་ཡིན། 4ཁྱོད་རྣམས་བདག་གི་ནང་དུ་གནས་པར་གྱིས། ང་རང་ཡང་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གི་ནང་དུ་གནས་པར༌བྱའོ།། ཡལ་ག་གང་ཞིག་རྒུན་འབྲུམ་ཤིང་གི་སྟེང་དུ་མ་གནས་ན་རང་ཉིད་ལ་འབྲས་བུ་མི་ཐོགས་པ༌ལྟར། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱང་བདག་གི་ནང་དུ་མི་གནས་ན་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལའང་འབྲས་བུ་མི་འབྱུང་ངོ༌།།

John 15:1-4

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

 

In the context of John 15, Jesus spoke of clean and abide.

Jesus, in the context of John 15, was referring to the remaining few disciples who had continued with Him till the night He was betrayed. It was this same group of disciples Jesus declared to be clean according to what He had spoken to them and they were instructed to abide in Him so that they may continue to be fruitful.

 

What does Jesus mean by “clean” in the context of John 15?

 

Being separated and devoted to Jesus’ way of teaching.

Separation and division based on God’s word is a well-established fact revealed and repeated through scripture.

What kind of separation can we observe from these disciples?

1. Separated from misleading teachings of their Jewish religious establishment namely the Pharisees and Sadducees who were among the most influential
2. There were various religious groups in Jerusalem at that time claiming to be part of Israel and following Moses’ Law but each having their own interpretations and practices, among them ultra-nationalist like the Zealots and Sicarii of whom Judas Iscariot could be part of. And apparently in the discourse of Jesus in John 15, Judas Iscariot was not there!

In various previous posts I had pointed out how Jesus through His teachings exposed those lies and misleading doctrines of man-made religions that offers fake hope of salvation with their concept of kingdom of God.

It was after Jesus’ death and resurrection then His disciples begins to have deeper convictions and understanding that Jesus have been speaking the truth and showing them the true way to eternal life with God.

 

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 14:6

སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། བདག་ནི་ལམ་དེ་ཉིད་དང༌། བདེན་པ༌ཉིད། ཚེ་སྲོག་ཉིད་བཅས་ཡིན༌ནོ། །ང་རང་མ་བརྒྱུད་པར་མི་སུའང་ཡབ་ཀྱི་དྲུང་དུ་འགྲོ་མི་ཐུབ་བོ།།

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

 

Back to John 8, Jesus continued His teaching on abiding in Him and being free.

So the Jews were puzzled – free from what? And Jesus made reference to sin

We can get better understanding from the apostle Paul who wrote post-resurrection to the Romans congregation with specific reference and teachings about sin, slavery to sin, and being set free from sin to serve God in righteousness.

The whole chapter 6 of Romans covers many details and we could focus on this

 

རོ་མཱ་པ། 6:16

ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་རང་ཉིད་གཡོག་པོ་བྱེད་པར་འབུལ༌ཞིང༌། སུ་ཡི་བཀའ་ལ་མཉན་ན་དེའི་གཡོག་པོ་ཡིན་པ་མི་ཤེས༌སམ། སྡིག་པའི་གཡོག་པོ་བྱས་ན་འཆི་བར་འགྱུར་བ༌དང༌། བཀའ་ལ་ཉན་པའི་གཡོག་པོ་བྱས་ན་མི་རྣམ་དག་ཏུ་འགྱུར༌བ་ཡིན་ནོ།།

Romans 6:16

Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

 

Back to Jesus message in John 8, therefore Jesus said to the Jews

 

34ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་ཡང་དག་པར་བདེན་པར་སྨྲ༌སྟེ། སྡིག་པ་བྱེད་མཁན་ཐམས་ཅད་ནི་སྡིག་པའི་བྲན་གཡོག་ཡིན། 35བྲན་གཡོག་ནི་རྟག་ཏུ་བདག་པོའི་ཁྱིམ་ལ་མི་གནས་ཤིང་བུ་ནི་རྟག་ཏུ་རང་གི་ཁྱིམ་ལ་གནས་སོ།། 36དེའི༌ཕྱིར། སྲས་ཀྱིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པར་མཛད་ན་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་དངོས་གནས་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པ་ཡིན།

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

 

What Jesus said sounded simple straight forward, for us having benefits of hindsight and we can compare and cross reference to what Paul wrote in Roman 6.

But how these Jews responded to Jesus further exposed another false doctrine they had been taught by the Pharisees and Sadducees – that is redemption by race!

 

34ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་ཡང་དག་པར་བདེན་པར་སྨྲ༌སྟེ། སྡིག་པ་བྱེད་མཁན་ཐམས་ཅད་ནི་སྡིག་པའི་བྲན་གཡོག་ཡིན།

33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

 

John the Baptist spoke against it in Matthew 3:4-10
