To Believe in Jesus – Part 90

 

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 8:33-38

33ཡང་དེ་རྣམས་ན༌རེ། ངེད་རྣམས་ནི་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་གྱི་རིགས་རྒྱུད་ཡིན་ཞིང་ནམ་ཡང་མི་གཞན་གྱི་བྲན་གཡོག་བྱས་མ་མྱོང་བས། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པར་མཛད་ངེས་ཡིན་ཞེས་བརྗོད་དོན་ཅི་ཞེས་དྲིས་པ༌ན། 34ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་ཡང་དག་པར་བདེན་པར་སྨྲ༌སྟེ། སྡིག་པ་བྱེད་མཁན་ཐམས་ཅད་ནི་སྡིག་པའི་བྲན་གཡོག་ཡིན། 35བྲན་གཡོག་ནི་རྟག་ཏུ་བདག་པོའི་ཁྱིམ་ལ་མི་གནས་ཤིང་བུ་ནི་རྟག་ཏུ་རང་གི་ཁྱིམ་ལ་གནས་སོ།། 36དེའི༌ཕྱིར། སྲས་ཀྱིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པར་མཛད་ན་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་དངོས་གནས་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པ་ཡིན། 37བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་གྱི་རིགས་རྒྱུད་ཡིན་པ་ཤེས༌ཀྱང༌། བདག་གི་བཀའ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱི་སེམས་སུ་གནས་ས་མེད་པས་ང་རང་དགྲོང་འདོད༌པ་ཡིན། 38ངས་རང་གི་ཡབ་ཀྱི་དྲུང་ནས་གང་ཞིག་མཐོང་བ་དེ་སྨྲ་བ་ཡིན༌ལ། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་རང་གི་ཕ་ཡི་ངག་ནས་ཐོས་པ་བཞིན་བྱེད་ཅེས་གསུངས༌སོ།།

John 8:33-38

33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

 

Continuing on Jesus’ conversations with a specific group of Jews in John 8 –

 

31དེ་ནས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་རང་ཉིད་ལ་དད་པ་ཡོད་པའི་ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། གལ་ཏེ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་བདག་གི་བཀའ་ཡི་ནང་དུ་གནས་ན། ཁྱོད་ཅག་ནི་དངོས་གནས་བདག་གི་རྗེས་འབྲང་པ་ཡིན༌ལ། 32ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་དེ་ཤེས་པར་འགྱུར་ཞིང་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་རང་དབང་ལྡན་པར་མཛད་ངེས་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས་སོ།།

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

 

Bearing in mind Jesus was addressing a specific group of Jews who believe in Him and had expressed intention to be His disciples.

How these Jews responded to Jesus exposed a form of misleading doctrine they had been taught by the Pharisees and Sadducees – redemption by race! The assumption that the children of Abraham from the line of Isaac and Jacob is a special chosen people of God have given rise to misleading teachings and doctrines of special unconditional entitlement to inherit the covenant blessing of God promised to Abraham.

John the Baptist spoke against it in Matthew 3:4-10

4ཡང་ཡོ་ཧ་ནན་གྱིས་རྔ་རྩིད་ཀྱིས་བཟོས་པའི་ལྭ་བ་གྱོན་པ་དང་ཀོ་བའི་སྐ་རགས་བཅིངས་ཤིང་ཟས་ལ་འབུ་ཆ་ག་པ་དང་རི་སྐྱེས་སྦྲང་རྩི་སྤྱོད་པ༌ཡིན། 5དེའི་དུས༌སུ། ཡེ་རུ་སཱ་ལེམ༌དང༌། ཡ་ཧུ་དཱའི་ཡུལ་ཡོངས༌དང༌། ཡོར་དན་གཙང་པོའི་མཐའ་འཁོར་དུ་ཡོད་པའི་མི་ཐམས་ཅད་ཁོང་གི་དྲུང་དུ་སོང༌ནས། 6རང་གི་སྡིག་པ་མཐོལ་བཤགས་བྱས་པ་དང་ཡོར་དན་གཙང་པོ་ལ་ཞུགས་ཤིང་ཁོང་གིས་ཀྱང་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་ཁྲུས་གསོལ་མཛད༌དོ།། 7འོན༌ཀྱང༌། ཡོ་ཧ་ནན་གྱིས་ཕ་རུ་ཤི་པ་དང་སཱ་ཅུ་སེ་པ་མང་པོ་ཞིག་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱི་ཁྲུས་གསོལ་མཛད་པའི་གནས་ལ་ཡོང་བ་གཟིགས༌ཏེ། ཁོང་གིས་མི་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། དུག་སྦྲུལ་གྱི་རྒྱུད་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ལ་སུ་ཞིག་གིས་མ་འོངས་པའི་ཐུགས་ཁྲོ་ལས་འབྲོ་བར་བསྟན༌ནམ། 8དེ་བས་ན་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་འགྱོད་བཤགས་དང་མཐུན་པའི་འབྲས་བུ་ལེགས་པོར་སྐྱེད༌ཅིག 9ཁྱོད་ཅག་གི་སེམས་སུ་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་ནི་ངེད་ཅག་གི་ཡབ་མེས་ཡིན་ཞེས་མ་སེམས༌ཤིག ངས་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་སྨྲ༌སྟེ། དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་རྡོ་འདི་དག་ལས་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་ལ་བུ་རྒྱུད་འབྱུང་བར་མཛད་ནུས༌སོ།། 10ད་ནི་སྟ་རེ་སྡོང་རྩར་བཞག་ཡོད༌དེ། ཤིང་སྡོང་གང་ལ་འབྲས་བུ་ལེགས་པོ་མི་སྨིན་པ་དེ་བཅད་ནས་མེའི་ནང་དུ་འཕེན་པར༌ངེས།

Matthew 3:4-10

4 Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, 6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

 

The assumption ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ specifically addressed to the Pharisees and Sadducees was referring to a form of misleading doctrine which can be understood as redemption by race, and racial entitlement because they claim to be descendants of Abraham who received the covenant blessing from God.

God’s covenant with Abraham have been subjected to continuous arguments and debates even till today especially the key point about the covenant being unconditional or conditional. And this same covenant blessing of God being passed down from Abraham to Isaac to Jacob and to the children of Israel, did God change anything or add to it and what are the conditions to be fulfilled on the part of the children of Israel?

 

Important question – what must the children of Israel do to inherit the covenant promises of God?

 

Apparently the fundamental disagreements – understanding the validity of God’s covenant promises to Abraham, interpretation and definition of God’s chosen people, and whichever part of the covenant deemed to be conditional and needed to be carefully observed and acted upon to receive the covenant blessing of God.

By the time of the Four Gospel, the Pharisees and Sadducees being two of the influential religious establishments at that time, among many others, had their way of interpreting God’s laws and promises of blessing to Abraham and how it should be applied.

This particular sect of the Pharisees and the Sadducees who were in charge of the Temple at that time rejected John the Baptist’s call for real sincere acts of repentance because of their assumption “We have Abraham as our father” and they rejected Jesus’ teachings as well.

A lot of the Jews living in Jerusalem were subjected to such misleading doctrines of the Pharisees and Sadducees, including those who begin to believe in Jesus.

So now in John 8 Jesus addresses these Jews who believed in Him and had expressed intention to be His disciples, and this particular conversation highlighted a fundamental faith issue all of us including Jews and Gentiles have to deal with

 

Sin and Redemption – how should we define sin and on what basis does God choose who to redeem from sin, judgement, and death?

 

The subject of sin is fundamental to our faith in Christ because if we have no clear understanding about how and on what basis God judges sin we will have no clear understanding how God will redeem us from sin and death.

What Christian theology states about salvation in Christ we need to know what is it that we are being saved from? And what promises of God awaits those who receive salvation through God’s chosen Messiah Jesus the Christ?

If we want to follow Jesus and be disciples of Jesus then we need to define sin as according to how Jesus define sin.

 

How did Jesus define sin? Through God moral standard revealed in scripture truth!

 

Based on what is revealed in scripture, sin is addressed within the context of God’s moral standard and the most basic details of God’s moral standard was explicitly recorded in His covenant established with the nation of Israel through His agent Moses at Mount Sinai, what most Christians would recognized as The Ten Commandments.

So based on God’s teaching and instructions, sin can be clearly defined as disobedience against God’s words, rebellion against God’s moral law code.

 

God’s redemption is not based on race and being special group of people chosen of God but based on what we know about sin and judgement from God’s teaching and how we response based on God’s teaching.

 

Jesus appeared in that time of history to show us the truth about sin and redemption. Jesus teaches us about trust and obedience to receive God’s promises of redemption and the hope of eternal life.

So back to the situation in John 8, Jesus’ conversation with the Jews, how did they assume their relationship with Abraham and disagree with what Jesus said about sin and being slave to sin?

Jesus’ conversation here with the Jews exposed their deviation from God’s moral standard revealed in His covenant and that happened due to intentional re-interpretation of scripture truth by their religious establishments namely the Pharisees and Sadducees.

In short – the Pharisees and Sadducees who assumed ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ and dismissed the need to do acts of repentance would re-interpret scripture to reflect themselves being a special chosen race of God endowed with unconditional provision and protection of God.

Jesus’ explanation to these Jews exposed their acts of disobedience

 

37བདག་གིས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་གྱི་རིགས་རྒྱུད་ཡིན་པ་ཤེས༌ཀྱང༌། བདག་གི་བཀའ་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཀྱི་སེམས་སུ་གནས་ས་མེད་པས་ང་རང་དགྲོང་འདོད༌པ་ཡིན།

37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.

 

I believe what Jesus said here “my word finds no place in you” has clear connection what John the Baptist accused the Pharisees and Sadducees of not producing fruits of repentance! Means they claim to believe in Jesus but do not follow His teachings!

James the brother of Jesus spoke of same issue

22ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ནི་རང་མགོ་རང་གིས་གཡོག་ཅིང་བཀའ་ལ་ཉན་མཁན་ཁོ་ནར་མི་འགྱུར་བར་བཀའ་བཞིན་དུ་སྒྲུབ་མཁན་དུ་གྱུར༌ཅིག 23རྒྱུ་མཚན་ནི་སུ་ཞིག་གིས་བཀའ་ལ་ཉན་པ་ལས་བཀའ་ལྟར་མི་སྒྲུབ་པ་ནི་མི་ཞིག་གིས་མེ་ལོང་ལས་རང་གི་ངོ་གདོང་མཐོང་བ་དང་མཚུངས༌ལ། 24མིག་གིས་མཐོང་ཞིང་ཕར་སོང་མ་ཐག་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱི་བཞིན་རས་ཇི་འདྲ་ཡིན་པ་བརྗེད་པ་ཡིན་ནོ།། 25འོན༌ཀྱང༌། སུ་ཞིག་གིས་ཕུལ་དུ་བྱུང་བ་དང་རང་དབང་འཐོབ་པར་བྱེད་པའི་བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་ལ་རྒྱུན་དུ་ཞིབ་ལྟ་བྱས་ནས་བརྩི་སྲུང་བྱེད་ན། བཀའ་ལ་ཉན་མ་ཐག་བརྗེད་པ་མིན་པར་དངོས་སུ་དེ་ལྟར་བསྒྲུབས༌པས། ཁོས་སྒྲུབ་པའི་དོན་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ་བྱིན་རླབས་འཐོབ་པར་འགྱུར་ངེས༌སོ།།

James 1:22-25

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

 

ཡ་ཀོབ། 2:20-26

20བླུན་པོ་ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་སྤྱོད་བཟང་མེད་པའི་དད་པ་ནི་འཆི་བ་ཡིན་པ་ཤེས་འདོད༌དམ། 21བདག་ཅག་གི་མེས་པོ་ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་གྱིས་རང་གི་བུ་ཨི་སཱག་མཆོད་ཁྲིའི་སྟེང་དུ་མཆོད་པར་ཕུལ་ཞིང༌། སྤྱོད་བཟང་དེ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་ཁོང་ནི་མི་རྣམ་དག་ཏུ་བརྩིས་པ་མ་ཡིན༌ནམ། 22དད་པ་དང་སྤྱོད་བཟང་གཉིས་མཉམ་དུ་གནས་པར་མ༌ཟད། ཁོང་གི་དད་པ་ནི་སྤྱོད་བཟང་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་ཆ་ཡོངས་སུ་རྫོགས་ཡོད་པ་རྟོགས་ནུས་སོ།། 23གསུང་རབ་ཀྱི་མདོ་ལས་ཇི་སྐད༌དུ། ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་གྱིས་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་དད་པ་བྱས་པ་དང་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཀྱང་ཁོང་ནི་མི་རྣམ་དག་ཏུ་བརྩིས་པ་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས་པ་བཞིན་དུ་གྲུབ་པ༌དང༌། ཨབ་ར་ཧམ་ནི་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་མཛའ་གྲོགས་སུ་འབོད་པར་གྱུར་ཏོ།། 24དེའི༌ཕྱིར། མི་ཞིག་རྣམ་དག་ཏུ་བརྩི་བ་ནི་དད་པ་འབའ་ཞིག་ལ་བརྟེན་པ་མ་ཡིན་པར་སྤྱོད་བཟང་ལའང་རག་ལས་པ་རྟོགས་ནུས་སོ།། 25དེ་བཞིན༌དུ། སྨད་འཚོང་མ་རཱ་ཧབ་ཀྱིས་བང་ཆེན་རྣམས་ལ་སྣེ་ལེན་བྱས༌ཤིང༌། ཡང་བང་ཆེན་རྣམས་ལམ་གཞན་བརྒྱུད་ནས་ཕྱིར་བཏང་བས། སྤྱོད་བཟང་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་ཁོ་མོ་ནི་མི་རྣམ་དག་ཏུ་བརྩིས་པ་མ་ཡིན༌ནམ། 26དེའི༌ཕྱིར། ལུས་པོ་ནི་རྣམ་ཤེས་དང་ཁ་བྲལ་ན་བེམ་པོ་ཡིན་པ༌བཞིན། དད་པའང་སྤྱོད་བཟང་དང་ཁ་བྲལ་ན་འཆི་བ་ཡིན༌ནོ།།

James 2:20-26

20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

 

Back to the situation in John 8, Jesus was addressing their lack of obedience to God.

These Jews in John 8 probably thought they were following God based on what they learned from the Pharisees and Sadducees but it turned out to be wrong!
