The Garden of Eden

Last time we read how God made a very good world and man as part of it. He made mankind (mi rigs; Hebrew ‘adam’) with the ability to think, to care for the environment (gnam s’i khyon), and to use it for his livelihood (‘tsho ba). And we read how God created them like himself, so that he could enjoy relationship (phan tshun legs ‘brel) with them. Then God whose name is Yahweh planted a garden for them.

 

ལེའུ་གཉིས་པ། 2:4 – 17

4 དེ་ནི་འཇིག་རྟེན་ཁམས་བཀོད་པའི་ལོ་རྒྱུས་ཡིན་ནོ༎

ཨེ་དེན་གྱི་ལྡུམ་རའི་སྐོར།

7 དེ་ནས་ཡ༷་ཝེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ས་སྟེང་གི་ཐལ་བ་ལས་མི་བཟོས་གནང་སྟེ་དེའི་སྣ་ཁུང་ལ་སྲོག་གི་དབུགས་བླུགས་པས། མི་དེ་སྲོག་དང་ལྡན་པ་ཞིག་བྱུང་ངོ༌།

8 ཡ༷་ཝེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཤར་ཕྱོགས་སུ་ཡོད་པའི་ཨེ༷་དེན་ཞེས་པའི་ཡུལ་ལ་ལྡུམ་ར་ཞིག་བཟོས་གནང་སྟེ། ཁོང་གིས་མཛད་པའི་མི་དེ་ལྡུམ་ར་དེར་བཞག

9 དེ་ཡང་ལྡུམ་ར་དེའི་ནང་ཡ༷་ཝེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ས་ནས་ཤིང་སྡོང་ལེགས་པོ་སྣ་ཚོགས་དང༌། དེ་རྣམས་ལ་འབྲས་བུ་ཞིམ་པོ་སྣ་ཚོགས་སྐྱེ་རུ་བཅུག ལྡུམ་ར་དེའི་དཀྱིལ་ལ་སྲོག་དང་ལྡན་པའི་ཤིང་དང༌། བཟང་ངན་རྟོགས་པའི་ཤིང་ཡང་སྐྱེ་བཅུག་པར་མཛད།

10 ཨེ༷་དེན་ཞེས་པའི་ཡུལ་ནས་ཆུ་ཞིག་ལྡུམ་རའི་ནང་རྒྱུགས་ཏེ་རྗེས་སུ་ཕྱིར་ཐོན་ནས་གཙང་པོ་བཞི་རུ་གྱུར།

11 གཙང་པོ་དང་པོའི་མིང་ལ་པི༷་ཤོན་ཟེར་ཞིང༌། དེ་ནི་ཧ༷་བི་ལ་ཞེས་པའི་ཡུལ་གྱི་མཐའ་ནས་རྒྱུག་གོ

12 ས་ཆ་དེར་ལྷད་མེད་པའི་གསེར་དང༌། དཀོན་པོའི་དྲི་ཞིམ་གྱི་ཆུ། གཟི་བཅས་ཐོན་གྱི་ཡོད།

13 གཙང་པོ་གཉིས་པའི་མིང་ལ་གི༷་ཧོན་ཡིན་ཏེ། དེ་ནི་ཀུ༷་ཤེ་ཞེས་པའི་ཡུལ་གྱི་མཐའ་ནས་རྒྱུག

14 གཙང་པོ་གསུམ་པའི་མིང་ནི་ཏི༷་ཀེ་ལི་སི་ཡིན་ཏེ། དེ་ནི་ཨ༷་སུར་ཞེས་པའི་ས་ཆའི་ཤར་ཕྱོགས་སུ་རྒྱུག གཙང་པོ་བཞི་པའི་མིང་ལ་ཡུ༷་ཧྥ་ལ་ཏི་ཅེས་ཟེར་རོ།

15 ཨེ༷་དེན་གྱི་ལྡུམ་རའི་ནང་འདེབས་ལས་བྱེད་པ་དང་ལྡུམ་ར་སྲུང་བའི་ཕྱིར་ཡ༷་ཝེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་མི་དེ་དེར་བཞག་གནང༌།

16 ཡ༷་ཝེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་མི་དེ་ལ་“ལྡུམ་རའི་ཤིང་སྡོང་གི་འབྲས་བུ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ཟ་ཆོག

17 འོན་ཀྱང་བཟང་ངན་རྟོགས་པའི་ཤིང་གི་འབྲས་བུ་ཟ་མི་ཆོག གལ་སྲིད་དེ་བཟས་ན་ཉིན་དེར་ཁྱོད་འཆི་བར་འགྱུར་ངེས་ཡིན་”ཞེས་གསུངས།

 

The First Man (skyes pho)

Having formed the man from the chemical elements of the ground, Yahweh now came and not only breathed life into him, but made a fit place on earth for him to live. When there was as yet no grass (rtswa) in the open dry country (thang ther), the garden had water and trees with fruits. And the man was put there to keep it. What to say? Such satisfying occupation for his body! (I know, because I too have a beautiful garden to keep for its owner. B)

 

ལེའུ་གཉིས་པ། 2:18-22

18 དེ་ནས་ཡ༷་ཝེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ “མི་འདི་གཅིག་པུར་བསྡད་ཚེ་མི་ལེགས་པས། ངས་ཁོང་དང་འཚམས་པའི་རོགས་པ་བྱེད་མཁན་ཅིག་བཟོ་བར་བྱ་”ཞེས་གསུངས།

19 ཡ༷་ཝེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ས་སྟེང་གི་ཐལ་བ་ནས་དུད་འགྲོ་ཐམས་ཅད་དང༌། ནམ་མཁའི་བྱ་ཐམས་ཅད་མཛད། དེ་ཚོ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི་མིང་ཇི་ལྟར་བཏགས་པ་གཟིགས་པའི་ཕྱིར་མི་དེའི་རྩར་ཁྲིད་ནས། མི་དེས་དེ་ཚོ་ལ་མིང་བཏགས་པ་དེ་བཞིན་སྲོག་ཆགས་རེ་རེ་ལ་མིང་རེ་རེ་བྱུང་ངོ༌།

20 མི་དེས་ཕྱུགས་རིགས་དང༌། བྱ་བྱིའུ་དུད་གྲོ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི་མིང་བཏགས། འོན་ཀྱང་རང་གི་ཆེད་དུ་གཏན་གྲོགས་འཚམས་པོ་ཞིག་མ་བྱུང༌།

21 དེའི་ཕྱིར་ཡ༷་ཝེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་མི་དེ་གཉིད་ལྗིད་པོ་ཞིག་ཁུག་བཅུག་སྟེ། ཁོ་གཉིད་ཁུག་དུས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཁོའི་རྩིབ་མ་གཅིག་བཏོན་ནས་ཤུལ་དེ་ནི་ཤ་ཡིས་བསྐྱོན།

22 ཡ༷་ཝེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་རྩིབ་མ་དེ་ལ་བུད་མེད་གཅིག་བཀོད་ནས་མི་དེའི་རྩར་ཁྲིད་པ་དང༌།

 

The First Woman

And Yahweh God also satisfied the man’s mind by bringing to him all the different sorts of animals for his curiosity. And he named them. (Children, as they grow, must learn to name things. And the work of scientists is to name and measure matter. This is the way to knowledge. I know the pleasure of it because I am a Biologist – skye dgnos rig pa’I mkhas pa )                                                                                                                              However God knew that he need a suitable companion, a spouse (gtan grogs ‘tshams po) who was both like him and different.

23 མི་དེས་

འདི་ནི་ང་ཡི་རུས་པའི་ནང་གི་རུས༎

ཤ་ཡི་ནང་གི་ཤ་ཡིན་དེ་ལ་ནི༎

བུད་མེད་ཅེས་པའི་མིང་བཏགས་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ནི༎

ཁོ་མོ་ཕོ་ནས་བཏོན་པར་བྱས་བའི་ཕྱིར༎

ཞེས་བཤད།

24 དེའི་རྐྱེན་གྱིས་སྐྱེས་པས་རང་གི་ཕ་མ་བཞག་ནས་རང་གི་བུད་མེད་དང་མཉམ་དུ་འདུས་ཞིང༌། ཁོང་གཉིས་ཤ་རུས་གཅིག་ཏུ་འགྱུར།

 

The First state of Pure Wisdom (ye shes)

Because the man and the woman lived peacefully in God’s sight in the garden of peace, there was no suffering; they enjoyed innocent purity (ye shes).

 

ལེའུ་གཉིས་པ། 2:25

25 མི་དེ་དང་རང་གི་བུད་མེད་གཉིས་ཀ་གཅེར་བུར་ཡོད་ཀྱང་ངོ་ཚ་མེད་དོ༎ མིས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་བཀའ་ལ་མ་ཉན་པའི་སྐོར།

 

In Eden they had full awareness (rig pa) – that is, no ignorance of God’s mind and provision for them, and no personal desire for something different, and no resentment of his oversight of their lives.

Next time we shall read how this wisdom, this truth, this happy dwelling in the love of their Creator was destroyed. It was the cause of all mankind suffering ignorance (ma rig pa) from then onwards.
