To Believe in Jesus – Part 113

 

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 10:25-30

25དེ་ནས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། བདག་གིས་སྔ་མོ་ནས་སྨྲས་ཀྱང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ཡིད་མ་ཆེས། བདག་གིས་རང་གི་ཡབ་ཀྱི་མཚན་གྱི་སྒོ་ནས་མཛད་པའི་ལས་དེ་དག་གིས་ང་རང་ལ་བདེན་དཔང་བྱེད༌པ་ཡིན། 26འོན་ཀྱང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ནི་བདག་གི་ལུག་མིན་པས་བདག་ལ་ཡིད་མི་ཆེས༌ཤིང་། 27ངའི་ལུག་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ངའི་སྐད་ལ་ཉན་པ༌དང༌། ངས་ཀྱང་ལུག་དེ་དག་ངོ་ཤེས་ཏེ་ལུག་རྣམས་ཀྱང་བདག་གི་རྗེས་སུ་འབྲང༌ངོ་།། 28ཡང་བདག་གིས་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་མཐའ་མེད་པའི་ཚེ་སྲོག་སྩོལ༌བས། དེ་དག་ནམ་ཡང་འཇིག་པར་མི་འགྱུར་ཞིང་སུས་ཀྱང་བདག་གི་ལག་ནས་དེ་རྣམས་འཕྲོག་མི་ནུས།

29བདག་གི་ཡབ་ཀྱིས་ལུག་དེ་རྣམས་བདག་ལ་གནང་ཞིང་ཁོང་ཉིད་ནི་ཐམས་ཅད་ལས་མཆོག་ཏུ་གྱུར་པ་ཡིན༌ཏེ། སུ་ཞིག་གིས་ཀྱང་བདག་གི་ཡབ་ཀྱི་ཕྱག་ནས་ལུག་དེ་རྣམས་འཕྲོག་པར་མི་ནུས། 30བདག་དང་ཡབ་ནི་ངོ་བོ་གཅིག་རང་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས༌སོ།།

John 10:25-30

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

 

Continuing with Jesus’ response to a specific group of Jews who confronted Him with that direct question

 

24ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཁོང་གི་མཐའ་བསྐོར་ཏེ་ན༌རེ། ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་དུས་ནམ་ཞིག་གི་བར་དུ་ངེད་ཅག་ལ་ཐེ་ཚོམ་སྐྱེས་སུ་འཇུག༌གམ། ཁྱེད་རང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་ཡིན་ན་ངེད་ཅག་ལ་གསལ་པོར་གསུང་བར་མཛོད་ཅེས་ཞུས་སོ།།

24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

 

Jesus confronted their disbelief and He said something here that various Christian denominations today have been debating and arguing for a long time with each claiming their rights of interpretations.

What does Jesus mean in v26?

 

26འོན་ཀྱང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ནི་བདག་གི་ལུག་མིན་པས་བདག་ལ་ཡིད་མི་ཆེས༌ཤིང་།

26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep.

 

This statement Jesus made had become part of a long standing theological debate among Christian denominations – doctrine of predestination.

 

I do not think Jesus was addressing anything about “doctrine of predestination”.

 

I must point out that this doctrine of predestination which a lot of Christians are familiar with is basically a man-made theological construct and it is never explicitly stated in scripture! The doctrine of predestination became prominent after the Reformation although the ideology behind it had been around for a long time since the founding of the Roman Catholic Church. It was during and after the Reformation that the doctrine of predestination became part of what we know today as systematic theology. Therefore till today this doctrine is still highly debatable if not controversial among those front line field workers doing mission outreach to the unreached.

So, since Jesus made this statement

 

26འོན་ཀྱང་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ནི་བདག་གི་ལུག་མིན་པས་བདག་ལ་ཡིད་མི་ཆེས༌ཤིང་།

26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep.

 

We must do our best to understand from Jesus’ perspective what was He addressing in this context.

We could get better and clearer understanding from Jesus’ overall public ministry because His message about the kingdom of God throughout His years of public ministry and preaching is consistent.

First let’s look at how Jesus started His public ministry

 

མད་ཐཱ། 4:17 – དེ་ནས་བཟུང་ཡེ་ཤུས་ཆོས་བསྟན་འགོ་ཚུགས་གནང་སྟེ་  “དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་རྒྱལ་སྲིད་འཐོན་ལ་ཉེ་བར་སླེབས་པས། ཁྱེད་ཚོས་སྤྱོད་པ་ངན་པ་རྣམས་སྤངས་ནས་སེམས་བསྒྱུར་དགོས་”  ཞེས་གསུངས།  ཉེ་གནས་ཐོག་མ།

Matthew 4:17 – From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

 

It is very clear from Jesus’ message that He is calling for a specific kind of response.

How we response to Jesus’ message and teaching involve our human will and decision making and our actions.

To repent simply means to turn away from our sins and sinful ways against the teachings of God the Father. Our human will and decision to follow Jesus will eventually involve change of lifestyle and habits.

As a general observation – those who listened and yet refused to repent had chosen either not to believe what Jesus was preaching or do not accept His authority from God.

The redemption plan of God for Man from sin and eternal death basically involves two key factors

 

1) God’s offer of atonement, forgiveness, and restoration. If God who is the eternal judge of our lives do not provide this option then there is no salvation for mankind. But God did provide us the option for redemption and His salvation plan is revealed in His chosen Messiah – Jesus the Christ.

རོ་མཱ་པ། 6:23 – དེས་ན་སྡིག་པའི་གླ་ཆ་འཆི་བ་ཡིན༌ཡང༌། དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་གནང་སྦྱིན་ནི་བདག་ཅག་གི་གཙོ་བོ་མཱ་ཤི་ཀ་ཡེ་ཤུའི་ནང་དུ་ཡོད༌པའི་མཐའ་མེད་པའི་ཚེ་སྲོག་དེ་ཡིན་ནོ།།

Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

 

2) Our human response. God have provided and we need to response through our human will to believe and through acts of obedience

 

ཡོ་ཧ་ནན་དང་པོ། 1:5-10

5དཀོན་མཆོག་ནི་འོད་ཟེར་ཡིན་པས་ཁོང་ལ་མུན་ནག་གཏན་ནས་མེད་དོ།། འདི་ནི་ངེད་ཅག་གིས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་ནས་ཐོས་ཤིང་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་སྒྲོག་པའི་བརྡ་འཕྲིན་ཡིན་ནོ།། 6གལ་ཏེ། བདག་ཅག་གིས་དཀོན་མཆོག་དང་འདྲིས་ཡོད་ཟེར་ཡང་། ད་དུང་མུན་ནག་ནང་དུ་སྤྱོད་པ་ཡིན་ན། དེ་ནི་བདག་ཅག་གིས་རྫུན་སྨྲས་པ་ཡིན་པས་བདེན་པ་ཉིད་བཞིན་དུ་སྤྱད་པ་སྤྱོད་པ་མ་ཡིན། 7དཀོན་མཆོག་ནི་འོད་ཟེར་ནང་དུ་བཞུགས་པ་བཞིན་བདག་ཅག་འོད་ཟེར་ནང་དུ་སྤྱོད་པ་ཡིན་ན། བདག་ཅག་ཕན་ཚུན་ལ་འདྲིས་ཡོད་པ་ཡིན་ལ། ཁོང་གི་སྲས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུའི་སྐུ་ཁྲག་གིས་བདག་ཅག་གི་སྡིག་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་འདག་པར་མཛད༌དོ།།

8བདག་ཅག་གིས་རང་ལ་སྡིག་པ་མེད་ཟེར་ན། དེ་ནི་རང་མགོ་རང་གིས་གཡོག་པ་ཡིན་པས། བདེན་པ་ཉིད་ནི་བདག་ཅག་གི་སེམས་སུ་གནས༌པ་མ་ཡིན་ནོ།། 9དཀོན་མཆོག་ནི་ཡིད་རྟོན་རུང་བ་དང་དྲང་བདེན་ཡིན་པས། བདག་ཅག་གིས་རང་གི་སྡིག་པ་མཐོལ་བཤགས་བྱས༌ན། ཁོང་གིས་བདག་ཅག་གི་སྡིག་པ་བསལ་ཞིང་དྲང་བདེན་མ་ཡིན་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་གཙང་མར་མཛད་ངེས་ཡིན། 10བདག་ཅག་གིས་སྡིག་པ་བྱས་མ་མྱོང་ཟེར་ན། བདག་ཅག་གིས་དཀོན་མཆོག་ནི་ཞལ་རྫུན་གསུང་མཁན་དུ་བརྩིས་པས། ཁོང་གི་བཀའ་ཡང་བདག་ཅག་གི་སེམས་སུ་གནས༌པ་མ་ཡིན་ནོ།།

1 John 1:5-10

5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

 

So Jesus’ call for repentance requires our human response.

God’s offer of redemption involves our human will and decision to trust and obey.

The situation in John 10, the obvious reason why Jesus pointed out these Jews was not His sheep because of their disbelief and refusal to trust and obey.
