ཡོ་ཧ་ནན། 10:31-39

31དེ་ནས་ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་སླར་ཡང་ས་ནས་རྡོ་བླངས་ཏེ་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་ལ་རྒྱག་པར་རྩོམ་པ༌ན། 32ཁོང་གིས་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། བདག་གིས་རང་གི་ཡབ་ནས་བྱུང་བའི་ལས་བཟང་པོ་གང་མང་ཁྱོད་ཅག་ལ་བསྟན་ཡང༌། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་ལས་བཟང་པོ་དེ་དག་ལས་གང་ཞིག་གི་ཕྱིར་དུ་ང་རང་ལ་རྡོ་ཡིས་རྒྱག་འདོད་པ་ཡིན་ནམ་ཞེས་གསུངས་པ༌ན། 33ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་རྣམས་ན༌རེ། ངེད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ལས་བཟང་པོར་དམིགས་ཏེ་ཁྱོད་ལ་རྡོ་ཡིས་རྒྱག་པར་རྩོམ་པ་མ་ཡིན༌ཏེ། ཁྱོད་ནི་མི་ཡིན་ཡང་རང་ཉིད་ནི་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཡིན་ཞེས་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་སྐུར་བ་བཏབ་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཡིན་ཞེས་སྨྲས༌སོ།། 34ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གི་བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་ནང་དུ་ངས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ནི་ལྷ་རྣམས་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས་མྱོང་བ་མ་ཡིན༌ནམ། 35གསུང་རབ་ལས་བྱུང་བའི་བཀའ་རྣམས་རྟག་ཏུ་ཡང་དག་ཅིང་བདེན་པ་ཡིན༌ལ། གལ་ཏེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱི་བཀའ་ཐོབ་པའི་མི་རྣམས་ལ་ལྷ་ཞེས་གསུངས༌ན། 36ཡབ་ཀྱིས་ང་རང་མཆོག་ཏུ་བདམས་ཤིང་འཇིག་རྟེན་དུ་མངགས་པ༌དང༌། ངས་རང་ཉིད་ནི་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་སྲས་ཡིན་ཞེས་སྨྲས༌པས། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ན༌རེ། ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་སྐུར་བ་བཏབ་ཅེས་ཟེར་དོན༌ཅི། 37གལ་ཏེ་ངས་རང་གི་ཡབ་ཀྱི་དོན་རྣམས་མི་སྒྲུབ༌ན། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་ཀྱང་ང་རང་ལ་ཡིད་ཆེས་བྱེད་དགོས་དོན་མི་འདུག 38གལ་ཏེ་ངས་རང་གི་ཡབ་ཀྱི་དོན་དེ་བསྒྲུབས་པ༌དང༌། ཁྱོད་ཅག་བདག་ལ་ཡིད་མི་ཆེས༌ནའང༌། དོན་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་ཡིད་ཆེས་བྱེད་དགོས༌ཏེ། བདག་གི་ཡབ་ནི་ང་ཡི་ནང་དུ་གནས་ཤིང་། ང་རང་ཡང་ཡབ་ཀྱི་ནང་དུ་གནས་པའི་དོན་དེ་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གིས་གསལ་པོར་ཤེས་པར་འགྱུར་བའི་ཕྱིར་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས་སོ།། 39དེ་ནས་ཡང་ཡ་ཧུ་དཱ་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུ་འཛིན་བཟུང་བྱེད་པར་རྩོམ་པ༌ན། ཁོང་ནི་མི་དེ་དག་གི་ལག་ནས་ཐར༌བ་རེད།

John 10:31-39

31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be broken— 36 do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

37 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” 39 Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

Situation had become so intense the Jews were ready to execute death sentence on Jesus by stoning.

This is not the first and last time we read of capital punishment by stoning as recorded in scripture but the actual occurrences appeared to be minimal.

The biblical legal ground for capital punishment by stoning can be traced to Deuteronomy 17:2-7 བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་སྐྱར་བཤད་ where Moses received instructions from Yah·weh יְהוָֹה to deal with anyone who intentionally seek to mislead the children of Israel to serve other gods except Yah·weh יְהוָֹה.

But here in the context of John 10, did Jesus actually and explicitly claimed to be God? No He did not!

And did Jesus teaches the Jews to serve other gods and not Yah·weh יְהוָֹה? No he did not!

The focal point of this heated debate in John 10 was about Jesus’ relationship with the Father that points to His divinity.

The divinity of Jesus has been the subject of long time debate even among Christians today. The complications of the arguments are both the denial and proving, and the similarity of theology associated with Greek mythology of humans and gods co-existing which made many Christians uncomfortable.

So here in John 10, the heated conversation continues with the authenticity of Jesus’ relationship with the Father.

I believe Jesus’ initial defense about His good deeds was not to claim credit but to show and question on what grounds this hostile group of fanatic Jews wanted to execute capital punishment on Him. Obviously there was no valid reason to punish Jesus except what He said about His relationship with the Father.

Then Jesus confronted them – those Jews who oppose Him – with an interesting statement

34ཡང་སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཡེ་ཤུས་འདི་སྐད༌དུ། ཁྱོད་ཅག་གི་བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་ནང་དུ་ངས་ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ནི་ལྷ་རྣམས་ཡིན་ཞེས་གསུངས་མྱོང་བ་མ་ཡིན༌ནམ། 35གསུང་རབ་ལས་བྱུང་བའི་བཀའ་རྣམས་རྟག་ཏུ་ཡང་དག་ཅིང་བདེན་པ་ཡིན༌ལ། གལ་ཏེ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱི་བཀའ་ཐོབ་པའི་མི་རྣམས་ལ་ལྷ་ཞེས་གསུངས༌ན། 36ཡབ་ཀྱིས་ང་རང་མཆོག་ཏུ་བདམས་ཤིང་འཇིག་རྟེན་དུ་མངགས་པ༌དང༌། ངས་རང་ཉིད་ནི་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་སྲས་ཡིན་ཞེས་སྨྲས༌པས། ཁྱོད་རྣམས་ན༌རེ། ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་དཀོན་མཆོག་ལ་སྐུར་བ་བཏབ་ཅེས་ཟེར་དོན༌ཅི།

If you are using a study bible with cross-references, it might show you a quote from Psalm 82 གསུང་མགུར། which bible commentaries would refer to human judges and those appointed to rule and to pass judgment based on God laws and the cultural norms of associating them with the divine. And there are those who perverted and corrupted God’s divine laws and they in turn will be judged.

So here again, Jesus had proven them they had no credible grounds and no legal clause from scripture to punish Him by stoning.

At this point it will be good to take a few steps back from this intense situation in John 10 and observe from an overall perspective and question what was it that these Jews could not accept of Jesus and were against Him?

The authenticity of Jesus’ relationship with the Father God Yah·weh יְהוָֹה.
Jesus’ given authority to judge bestowed upon Him by the Father
This Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah chosen of God
