John 11:17-27
17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
So Jesus finally arrived in Bethany.
It is interesting to note that the gospel writer deliberately pointed out this
18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.
This piece of information do speaks of Lazarus’s family relation with the Jews in Jerusalem.
Jerusalem was where the Sanhedrin was based as the Temple was there and the Sadducees together with the Pharisees being the two major prominent religious/political groups they were members of the Sanhedrin. So the Jews who were settled in Jerusalem and not the diaspora pilgrims, what they think and say about Jesus and John the Baptist more or less had some form of representations related to either the Pharisees or Sadducees.
Apparently Lazarus and his family being good friend of Jesus, had good relation with the Jewish community in Jerusalem who were well connected to the synagogues and perhaps even members of the Sanhedrin. I believe both sides were well aware of the divisions and disagreements about Jesus but avoided any public confrontations.
As we will read further after Lazarus was raised from the dead the Sanhedrin paid extra attention to it as to how that incident caused many Jews in Jerusalem to turn to believe in Jesus, and they eventually plotted to kill both Jesus and Lazarus! Lazarus was dead once but they wanted him dead again!
Back to the situation in John 11:18-19 – so the Jews in Jerusalem come to console Martha and Mary because of Lazarus.
Some among them I believe were close friends who had real concern for the family, and some may had arrived due to religious obligations as part of the Jewish community and members of the synagogues.
Apparently it was a sizable crowd as Jesus expected.
Next the attention and focus of John 11 message was upon Martha, and I believe this serve another important purpose for the main theme of the Gospel of John – To Believe in Jesus.
Three things Martha said to Jesus that was highlighted here which expressed her faith in the Messiah –
1) She had no doubt about Jesus’ power to heal!
21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”
2) She believe in the resurrection, which the Sadducees who oversee the Temple service rejected!
24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
3) She believe and confessed Jesus is the Christ!
27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
The other person mentioned in the gospel records who confesses the same was Peter
Matthew 16:16 – Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Martha’s faith in Jesus could well be reflective of her family’s view as well. That means together with Lazarus and Mary, they hold the same faith in Jesus. And that kind of faith in Jesus could provide us reasons why
A) Many Jews in Jerusalem turned to believe in Jesus after Lazarus was raised from the dead. Lazarus’ family were living example of faith and trust in the true living God who appeared to Abraham and the promises of the coming Messiah as spoken by the prophets of old.
B) Eventually the fanatic Jews together with the Sanhedrin who oppose Jesus and initially wanted to put Jesus to death, after the incident of Lazarus being raised from the dead wanted Lazarus dead again as well, in order to prevent and stop more Jews believing in Jesus!
To be continue …
