To Believe in Jesus – Part 125

John 11:11-16
11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

So here Jesus tells His disciples plainly Lazarus had died.

The conversation between Jesus and His disciples had been on the issues of “sleep” and “death”, and Jesus finally tells them what He meant, that Lazarus had died.

How do you think Jesus’ disciples would had responded? Most likely kept silence for the moment.

I think Jesus’ disciples might had been struggling in their minds – one moment Jesus said Lazarus is asleep, next He said :Lazarus is dead! What will Jesus say next?

Right after that Jesus said this

15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

Jesus said to His disciples “for your sake”.

Apparently Jesus was trying to deal with very deep foundational issues of faith among His disciples. He knew who believe and who continues to doubt and who do not believe.

This issue of believe runs deep throughout the gospel of John.

The first among the disciples of Jesus to manifest his doubts was Thomas! And this is the same Thomas that Jesus after His resurrection said to him –

John 20:29 – Jesus said to him (Thomas), “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

From the conversation between Jesus and His disciples and there was no records of how Jesus responded to Thomas there and then, we can see the patience and grace of God for those struggling with their faith.

For sincere believers and those who do struggle with their faith in Christ, we can trust that Jesus will show us the truth if we are willing to continue to trust and obey and walk in His light.

Back in John 11, over in Judea, Lazarus’ family were expecting Jesus and their faith remains firm in times of difficulties – the death of a close family.

There is a similar situation whereby Jesus raised a dead person and Jesus addressed the same issue of believe

Mark 5:22-24
22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him (Jesus), he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he (Jesus) went with him.

Jesus was on the way to Jairus’ house when His journey was disrupted by a woman who was struggling with an issues of blood for 12 years and got healed by Jesus.

Mark 5:35-43
35 While he (Jesus) was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Jesus raised the dead and addressed the issue of believe.

And we have a well noted scripture in Hebrews for our reference and learning

Hebrews 11:1 – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

When we struggles with our faith we need to find our anchor of faith in the resurrection of Jesus!

To be continue …
